Kendi Everyday’s fashion challenge: 30 pieces in 30 days.

30 for 30 Recap

Thank you Kendie for the inspiration and challenge! I just completed my second 30 for 30 in 2011. The first was back in February, and was much harder than this one—mainly because I had too many tops, not enough bottoms, and threw too many non-mixable patterns into the mix.

This time, I had three dresses instead of one, meaning one piece could hold its own for a day or two. All of the bottoms (except for the reversible skirt) were solid and neutral and matched every top in the collection.

recap

Weather proved to be the biggest challenge. I had to include outfits for cool temperature and possible heatwaves. We did reach 80 degrees for a day or two here in Seattle, but we didn’t experience the heat wave that the rest of the US seemed to be enduring. Overall, it was fun; however, I do miss my other clothes. I’m going to spend the next month wearing things I haven’t worn in a long time, starting with a pair of cute polka-dotted shorts I bought in Santa Fe.

Here are a few interesting stats about this challenge:

  • Least-worn item: The green top from day 13
  • Most-worn item: The denim capris (4 times)
  • Number of times I wore boots: 3
  • Number of times I wore my black Timberland sandals: 7
  • Unexpected success: Wearing dresses as skirts

Did you participate in the challenge? What were your highlights (and low points)?

Days 28 to 30

Day 28: I wondered today how dressy I could make a simple t-shirt dress, so I threw on my nude heels and a metallic belt and grabbed this pashmina.

day 28

Dress: Express
Tank: Papaya
Belt: Target
Shoes: Nine West
Scarf: Walgreens

Day 29: I’m wearing my dotty dress again, but as a skirt with my teal T over it. I’ve gotten a lot of use out of this top during the challenge. I’ll be happy to give it a break soon.

day 29

Top: H&M
Dress: Thrifted
Necklace: Swapped
Shoes: Timberland

Day 30: Final day! I went with warm tones today. The cardigan isn’t part of my 30 pieces, but I needed it to stay warm until the day heated up, which fortunately it did. I wouldn’t have normally worn a silk maxi skirt to work, but I was running out of combinations. I received a few compliments on it so it all worked out.

day 30

T-shirt: Victoria’s Secret
Cardigan: Thrifted
Skirt: Boutique in Portland
Necklace: Macy’s
Shoes: Naturalizer

Days 25 to 27

Day 25: I’m wearing my neutral skirt again. I added it to the 30 for 30 challenge because I also used it for the Neon and Neutral challenge. Double duty. Because it was in my rotation, I was forced to try this in a few new ways. I’m glad; until this month I’d worn it only once. I’m going to make this a summer staple. It truly goes with anything.

day 25

Top: H&M
Skirt: Swapped
Shoes: Nine West
Bag: Shiraleah
Sunglasses: target
Earrings: Shirazi, Seattle

Day 26: I had more plans for this top (I wanted to wear it with my white jeans, for example), but it will have to wait until after the challenge. I put my white jeans in rotation a lot this month and they’re currently in the wash. They’re so versatile. Almost as versatile as these gray jeans. I definitely got my $5 out of them. Here, I wore them tucked into boots because it’s cool today. Go figure.

day 26

Top: eBay
Jeans: Bluenotes
Boots: Naturalizer

Day 27: Today’s a casual day. I spent it at a craft fair and did a volunteer shift as the official photographer! I’ll publish a separate post about that soon. I got to wear an official shirt and badge, but before I left, I rocked my sparkly tank again. Even Alice liked it (slightly more than she liked being picked up at least).

day 27

Hat: Bluenotes
Tank: Old Navy
Jeans: True Originals
Shoes: Naturalizer
Cat: Thrifted

Days 22 to 24

Day 22: I wore this bright shirt with my denim capris today. It’s a loose, cool top, suitable for warmer days. As an added bonus, it’s nice and billowy so you can’t tell that I had too much sushi for dinner!

day 22

Top: Macy’s
Jeans: True Originals
Shoes: Payless
Bracelets: Claire’s

Day 23: My bright pink dress is back. I wore it with boots on day 10, but I was glad to ditch those today. I paired it with a blue tank and belt. My necklace is a piece of a butterfly wing encased in glass. Now that I write about it, it sounds kind of morbid, but no butterflies were harmed for the making of the necklace (They died of natural causes? Yikes! I’m digging myself in deeper). The money raised goes to help conservation efforts. Tha’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

day 23

Dress: Express
Tank: Wet Seal
Belt: Steve Madden
Shoes: Timberland
Necklace: Shirazi

Day 24: I’m wearing my reversible skirt again, this time with a sequined tank. It’s a lot of white for one outfit, but it felt fresh and summery. The cardigan isn’t part of the 30 pieces; I wore it in the morning while it was still cool and removed it later in the day.

day 24

Cardigan: Nordstrom
Tank: Old Navy
Skirt: Zand Amsterdam
Sunglasses: Target
Shoes: Aerosoles
Bag: Shiraleah

Days 19 to 21

Day 19: It’s finally nice enough to wear this Edun dress on its own (I wore it on day 6 as a tunic). It’s really comfortable, loose, and airy. I think this will be terrific no matter how hot it gets. I wore my nude heels for an elongating look and matched my bag to my shoes. I don’t usually do that, but the bag picked up the creamy tones that run through dress.

day 19

Dress: Edun
Purse: Shiraleah
Shoes: Nine West
Necklace: Premier Designs

Day 20: I’m wearing the polka dot dress today, and not as a skirt like I did on day 16. It’s made of a stretchy polyester and is really comfortable. I’m not sure if it has a 50s vibe or a French feel; either way, I like it. It was a thrift store find and it’s great for travel (wrinkle-free). I threw on a scarf/shawl type cover-up because it was a bit cool.

day 20

Dress: Thrifted
Wrap: Michael Stars
Shoes: Flexx
Bracelet: Claire’s

Day 21: Here’s the maxi from day 9. You can see why I didn’t wear it like this to the office. It’s a bit revealing, but for the Fourth of July, it seemed perfect. A relaxing outfit for a relaxing day. My sweet husband knows I’m not a sun lover so he found a shady park for us under Interstate 5. I hope all of my American readers had a good one! Here’s to independence!

day 21

Dress: Fred Meyer’s
Clutch: Crystalyn Kae
Earrings: Claire’s
Sunglasses: Convenience store
Sandals: Naturalizer

Days 16 to 18

Day 16: Here’s a new piece I haven’t worn yet in the challenge. It’s actually a dress, but I thought it was too low-cut for work. Plus, it’s breezy and cool today, so I needed to layer. This cardigan isn’t part of my thirty pieces; I wore it for warmth. My bracelet is made from a bicycle tire! Most of the bracelets for sale were black (obviously) so I picked this one since it seemed unique. It’s made from a red tire.

day 16

Cardigan: Ross Dress for Less
T-shirt: Victoria’s Secret
Dress-as-skirt: Thrifted
Purse: Coach via thrifted
Bracelet: Punk Rock Flea Market
Necklace: Gifted
Sunglasses: Target
Shoes: Flexx

Day 17: I’m wearing the same pink top that I wore on Monday, but since I worked at home today and went out with non-work friends in the evening, let’s keep this secret between us. Even though I have a limited wardrobe this month, I’m trying to keep each week fresh and non-repeating. The outfit itself is pretty plain so I jazzed it up with a DIY t-shirt infinity scarf and a zebra-striped bag.

day 17

Top: JC Penneys
Capris: True Originals
Shoes: Timberland
Bag: Boodlebags
Scarf: DIY (I made it)
Bracelets: Boutique in Portland

Day 18: Here are my white jeans again. I wore them on the weekend, but no one from work knows that. I dressed them up with my boho top today. Even though it’s Canada Day, and not quite the 4th of July, I thought it was time to show a bit of patriotism. I’m in red, white and blue—even the wall and chair match.

day 18

Top: Metropark
Jeans: Lucky Brand
Bracelet: Punk Rock Flea Market
Shoes: Timberland
Sunglasses: Target
Earrings: Thrifted

Days 13 to 15

Day 13: I went for brunch with Mr. Jean of all Trades today. The sun was shining and we actually ate outside. So nice! I paired the white jeans with a bright green top. I wore my yellow sandals and carried my Shiraleah vegan cross-body bag. I’m really surprised at how much these yellow shoes go with.

day 13

Top: H&M
Jeans:Lucky Brand
Shoes: Aerosoles
Bag: Shiraleah
Sunglasses: Target

Day 14: Here’s my reversible skirt (the same one I wore on Day 8). The other side has an Indian-inspired print; this one has cartoon characters and is Japanese-inspired. I wore this top for Day 3, which also happened to be the Bloggers Do It Better Neon + Neutral challenge.

day 14

Top: JC Penneys
Skirt: Zand Amsterdam
Shoes: Naturalizer
Bag: Snap Design

Day 15: Halfway thought the challenge (not that I’m counting)! This is the tunic I wore on Day 5, but today I paired it with the gray jeans from Day 6. You can see the repeats now, although I still have one dress I have yet to debut.

day 15

Tunic: Damselfly
Jeans: Bluenotes
Belt: Thrifted
Cuff: Thrifted
Bag: Snap Design
Shoes: Timberland

Days 7 to 9

Day 7: I chose white jeans today because they’re so summery. I love the crispness of white and how it makes the other colors I’m wearing really stand out. White is nice because they look dressier than blue jeans, especially in a trouser cut. And since they’re thicker than a trouser, they’re not see-through. Always a plus.

day 7

Top: Macy’s
Jeans: Lucky Brand
Shoes: Aerosoles
Earrings: Target
Bracelets: Claire’s

Day 8: Today really felt like summer. It was almost 80 degrees. I wore the same shoes as yesterday, but paired them with a reversible skirt. Wait until you see it next week! I feel like I’m cheating on the 30 for 30. This twofer is a great travel piece. It’s one-size-fits-all because it has an adjustable snap waistband. I wore this lower on my hips so it wouldn’t be too short for work.

day 8

T-shirt: Victoria’s Secret
Skirt: Zand Amsterdam
Scarf: DIY (I made it)
Shoes: Aerosoles
Sunglasses: Convenience store in Santa Fe
Purse: Vintage Frye via thrifted
Bracelets: Claire’s

Day 9: Tennis anyone? I was on my way to work when I saw this miniature tennis court in a local park. Of course I didn’t play a game. I was alone. With a coffee. Wearing a maxi dress. I bought the dress at Fred Meyer, which is mostly a grocery store. I find that amusing. I styled my dress as a skirt by wearing a t-shirt over it. The dress is really low-cut and not office-appropriate. But it will be fine on the beach later in the challenge.

day 9

T-shirt: H&M
Jacket: Betsey Johnson via thrifted
Dress: Fred Meyer
Belt: Steve Madden
Sandals: Naturalizer
Earrings: DIY (and I have a spare pair for sale)

Days Four to Six

Day 4: Sun’s out! Finally. It wasn’t supposed to last long, so I took advantage of it and wore capris and this boho top. True casual Friday. I’m so used to thrifting and buying things on sale, that it felt weird when I forked over the full $29.99 for this top. It’s pretty versatile though and I’ve enjoyed it for two summers already.

day 4

Top: Metropark
Capris: True Originals
Shoes: Timberland
Purse: Nine West
Necklace: Gifted
Sunglasses: Target

Day 5: It rained pretty hard this morning but stopped in time for the Seattle Style Bloggers picnic. Still, most of the day, my outfit was hidden by my raincoat. I braved the temps to show off my tunic, but put my coat back on again. I’m so glad I added boots to my 30 for 30 mix.

day 5

Tunic: Damselfly, Seattle
Tights: Newport News
Belt: Ross Dress for Less
Boots: Naturalizer
Bracelets: Lucca, Seattle
Umbrella: Baby & Co.

Day 6: Hubby and I went to Sunlight Vegetarian Cafe for a delicious brunch. At least the sun was in the name of the restaurant; it sure wasn’t in the sky. I concealed my sweater behind my clutch for this photo. Trust me, I needed it today!

day 6

Dress-as-tunic: Edun
Jeans: Bluenotes
Necklace: Upcycled DIY by me
Shoes: Flexx
Clutch: Thrifted

Days One to Three

I’m back on the 30 for 30 challenge bandwagon! I’m really looking forward to remixing thirty items thirty different ways. I hope you join me (or follow along).

Day one: I started with a dress. It’s a bit low-cut for work so I added a tank underneath. This isn’t part of the 30 pieces but since undergarments don’t count, I’m not counting this. It’s a fine line. I picked up this dress at Wish, a cute seattle clothing and accessory store. It was on sale because they were moving from Greenwood to Ravenna.

day 1

Dress with belt: Wish
Purse: Ross Dress for Less
Sunglasses: Target
Necklace: Gifted
Bracelets: Damselfly
Shoes: Timberland

Day 2: I tried leggings today. As much as I love leggings (so-o comfortable), I don’t have a lot of long tops to wear with them. So I don’t wear them a lot. I’m not a big rule-follower, but if you wear leggings, cover your bum! I see people wearing leggings with short tops. Why? I don’t care about their “immodesty,” but it looks like they’re not wearing pants. Like they meant to add a skirt and left the house without one.

This breezy tunic works nicely with leggings. In fact, it’s the only way I’ve worn this top so far. I have a few ideas up my sleeve for variations, so keep an eye out for how I re-style it.

day 2

Tunic: eBay
Leggings: Newport News
Belt: Thrifted
Earrings: I made ’em
Shoes: Payless

Day 3: Today is also Bloggers do it Better day over at Pretty Shiny Sparkly. I thought I’d feed two birds with one hand by incorporating the neon and neutrals for BDIB into my 30 for 30 mix. I’ve never mixed these two items, so I’m happy to have taken the BDIB challenge too. You’ll see this skirt a few more times this month. Let me know which is your favorite.

day 3

Top: JC Penneys
Skirt: Swapped
Bag: Shiraleah
Necklace: Street vendor in Santa Fe
Bracelets: Damselfly
Shoes: Nine West
