Plaid and Stars

On our recent visit to New York, my parents and I visited Beacon’s Closet, a trendy, second-hand shop with a few locations around town. My dad got a great Hawaiian shirt, my mom bought a velvet top, and she found me this Yves Saint Laurent star appliqué t-shirt.

Top: YSL via Beacon’s Closet
Pants: LEI
Pleather boots: Coconuts via swapped
Scarf: Fred Meyer

The stars on the t-shirt are tone-on-tone so it didn’t seem too busy to mix patterns. I took a chance by adding a scarf with elephant motif. The reason it’s not too overpowering is because the color palette is minimal. Sand, wine and black.

After a dry summer with dormant grass (I had to mow only the weeds), my grass finally turned green and started to grow. Now that it’s cooler, the grass isn’t growing, but it’s still green. Perfect! I’m waiting for the last of the leaves to fall off this tree so I can add a single, red Christmas ornament–an homage to the Charlie Brown Christmas tree!

Merlot Sweater and Cobalt Skirt

For two whole minutes last fall, I had long(ish) hair. It’s funny how I wait so long to grow my hair out and then immediately get bored with it. Well, here’s a rare look at the long-haired me. A little #TBT.

I wore my comfy merlot (burgundy/wine) sweater with a pencil skirt. This stretchy skirt is very versatile. It goes with everything from blazers to t-shirts. I dressed up the simple top with a long necklace with a wing and some bling.

It’s officially tights weather in Seattle so I thought a look back to last year’s tights season would be appropriate. The outfit was worn a while ago but it works now. In fact, I might just wear this tomorrow!

Houndstooth Dress Two Ways

I love houndstooth. It’s such a classic pattern I doubt it will ever go out of style.

I thought I’d style my new dress a couple of different ways so see if I could make my dress look fresh. First, I wore bright blue shoes and a black cardigan.

Dress: H&M
Cardigan: Target
Faux Suede Shoes: Payless
Vegan Purse: Crystalyn Kae

Then, I tried the opposite: A blue cardi and black shoes, er, boots.

The boots help take my dress into fall. Next up: Tights and a jacket. I think I could even wear a turtleneck under this dress and mix up the look even more.

Endless Summer

I don’t like fall. There. I said it. All my friends are celebrating the changing leaves and sweater weather with pumpkin spice lattés and I’m having none of it! Seattle had a terrific summer. Warm, but not humid. Sunny but not hot. Mid 80s from May through September. I could count the rainy days on one hand. Even now, it’s not time for a coat.

If I had my way, it would be summer forever. Sure the autumn colors are pretty but the days are getting shorter and the nights are cool. Winter will be here soon, and that bums me out.

thrifted top

These photos are from a month or so ago, when I was enjoying my backyard oasis. I still hang out there with my dog, but the garden has faded. My top, however, is still bright.

balancing act

I bought this at a thrift store–despite it being two sizes too big. I just couldn’t resist the little shoe pattern! For my first attempt, I belted it. I might take it in at the waist–or maybe completely transform it into a skirt, a scarf, who knows?

Such a big, busy top needed a simple, streamlined bottom so I wore skinny jeans and nude ballet flats.

I’ll be switching to fall clothes soon, but I’ll cope. I’m counting down the days till spring!

Peplum Top and Polka-dots

I didn’t jump on the peplum trend when it hit stores a couple of years ago, but when I found this peplum top at a clothing exchange I figured I’d take a chance on a new style.

Jeans: Makers of True Originals
Shoes: DSW with DIY heels
Bracelets: Claire’s

Peplums, a short overskirt or extra layer of fabric that emphasizes the waist, actually came into fashion in the 1860s. I think of them as more of a 1950s item. A couple of years ago, retro-inspired fitted jackets and tops hit the stores. I didn’t buy any, although I did find a peplum-inspired top at a clothing exchange a while back.

I’m late to the trend, partially because I’m still not sold on it–despite its waist-whittling effect. But like I said. Clothing exchange. Zero-risk investment.

red and blue

I wore the top with denim capri pants (also slightly retro). Capris are a great seasonal transition piece. My red sandals got one last hurrah. I’ll be switching to closed-toed shoes soon. The rains are coming.

capris for fall

I have a winter peplum (black velvet) that my mom gave me so I’ll try that out when the weather is cooler. Do you have peplum tops? What do you think of them?

Blue and White Hi-low Dress

I found this dress at a clothing exchange recently. I love grabbing items I might not otherwise try. It’s a no-risk investment. Turns out, I like the cut of this dress–but if I ever change my mind, I’ll bring it back to another exchange.

Dress: Swapped
Belt: Florida shop
Sunglasses: Flea market in Florida
Shoes: Payless
Rubber bracelets: eBay

I added a belt I already had so this dress would have a bit of definition at the waist. And so things weren’t too predictable, my red wedges made an appearance. Red, white, and blue. I should have worn this on the 4th of July!

swapped dress

When I wear my white sunglasses, I’m reminded of Kurt Cobain–I recall pictures of him wearing a similar pair. When the world lost Cobain, I was still living in Toronto. Who knew just a few years later, I’d be in Seattle? A little too late to enjoy the grunge scene, but it’s a great city nonetheless.

Palazzo Pants for Day and night

I bought a pair of colorful tribal-print palazzo pants this summer and found a few ways to wear them. These look fun with a tank top in any of the colors in the pants: wine, teal, black or white.

Sometimes a simple white T does the job well. This shirt has a slight cowl neck so it’s not exactly plain.

On another day recently, I wore a loose, sleeveless shirt with a bit of detailing on the neckline.

Top: H&M
Necklace: Gifted

Finally, for evening, I wore a fitted black top with loose sleeves.

I like getting lots of use of my clothes so I need to make sure I can wear items more than one way. These pants passed the test. Plus, they were cool and comfortable on my trip to NYC. I neat the heat in style, so I consider this a win. I wore these in parks, subways, on the street, and out to eat.

What’s your go-to traveling outfit?

The Return of the Pink Skater Dress

Last year, on my trip to NYC, I saw a cute skater dress. However, it was in Old Navy–and I didn’t fly across the country to shop in a national chain! When I got back from my trip, I found the dress at my local store (no sense filling my suitcase with things I can buy at home).

This year, I packed my skater dress for my trip to NYC. It made its east coast debut in Chelsea.

Dress: Old Navy
Pleather boots: Diba (from DSW)
Purse: Crystalyn Kae
Cuff: Brooklyn Flea

I packed light this year. Four dresses, four pair of shoes, a skirt, a pair of pants, two tank tops and a cardigan. Not bad for two weeks away! However, no matter how light I pack, I can always go lighter–especially when travelling to a shopping mecca like NY! I bought 10 dresses on my trip (many at thrift shops) so I could have arrived with an empty suitcase. By the time my trip wrapped up, I had a wardrobe that would last all season!

posing in Marimekko

I wore this dress to my appointment at Ted Gibson Salon. I thought having my hair cut in The Big Apple would be a treat. Ted Gibson (from What Not to Wear) was out of my price range, but his stylist Sherilyn did a great job.

My parents joined me on the trip again this year. My mom has been much better about blogging about the trip, so check out her latest post (my skater dress makes an appearance–and she has one in houndstooth).

Oh, and the cuff? Genuine made-in-Brooklyn artistry at work. It’s made from a fork!

Stay tuned for more posts from New York–my favorite home away from home.

Casual Grays

For a comfortable, versatile look, I often gravitate to capri pants–and these gray ones were $5. I’ve worn them so much over the past four years that even if I’d paid $100 for them I’d have gotten my money’s worth.

Wearing this slouchy, oversized graphic T with my pants is comfortable and versatile. This day, I was just running errands but I’ll happily go our for lunch or shopping wearing my gray outfit.

Floral and Khaki in the Garden

Here’s a cute top I fell in love with at a local thrift store. It was too big, however, but nothing a little cinching couldn’t fix. My stretchy belt came in handy!

I paired my floral top with olive-green pants, which I rolled up to show off my loafers. Overall, this is a thrifty outfit.

It’s cute enough to run errands in, or grab a latté with hubby, but it’s not something I have to worry about if I muck around in the garden–something I love doing this time of year. My backyard is a peaceful, happy place where I can scout out birds, and drink wine in the shade while my dog sunbathes.

thrifty outfit

Seattle summers are short so I learn to appreciate them. Fortunately, winters are mild. I plant lots of types of flowering plants so I have something pretty to look at all year. There are a few weeds in my pesticide-free yard, but I don’t mind. I want the wild bunnies to eat organic!
