Houndstooth Dress Two Ways

I love houndstooth. It’s such a classic pattern I doubt it will ever go out of style.

I thought I’d style my new dress a couple of different ways so see if I could make my dress look fresh. First, I wore bright blue shoes and a black cardigan.

Dress: H&M
Cardigan: Target
Faux Suede Shoes: Payless
Vegan Purse: Crystalyn Kae

Then, I tried the opposite: A blue cardi and black shoes, er, boots.

Pleather and Neoprene Boots: DSW

The boots help take my dress into fall. Next up: Tights and a jacket. I think I could even wear a turtleneck under this dress and mix up the look even more.

Houndstooth, Paisley and Stripes

I went all out with monochromatic pattern-mixing today. I was slow to embrace the trend, but I’ve learned to love it. I just don’t always like to think too hard about how my clothing items work together as an outfit. That’s why I don’t mix patterns a lot.

Coat: Macy’s
Shirt: Marshalls
Skirt: Swapped
Tights: Roots Canada
Shoes: Soda
Scarf: Fred Meyer’s
Necklace: JC Penney

Black and white is the common theme that ties the patterns together. Finding a theme made it easier to mix and match. Plus, stripes are practically a neutral. They go with everything.

I added a pop of color with my hot pink infinity scarf–it’s still so gray in Seattle that I needed something to cheer myself up. The flowers in my garden (or lack thereof) won’t help for a while. And the rats are gloomy too. I stenciled those rats on my fence as an homage to Banksy. Or was he really here?

My wedge platforms complete the outfit. They’re fun and surprisingly practical. At least I won’t sink into the grass like I would in heels!

Wearing my Houndstooth Coat Again

I’m a fan of checks, tartan and houndstooth. They’re all in the plaid family and plaid is so fun to wear! I found this coat on sale at Macy’s last year–complete with scarf!

red and black and white

Coat: Macy’s
Top: Express
Leggings: Kensie Girl
Boots: MIA
Purse: Crystalyn Kae

I like wearing it with bright pants–think red or yellow or fuchsia–but it goes well with anything. Today I wore it with black, but I let my red cowl neck peek out for a pop of color.

Hot Pink and Houndstooth

You know I love hot pink. And I love houndstooth. So it was only a matter of time before I paired this color and pattern combination together.

I got this little Valentino-style rosette purse from a flea market in Florida. I absolutely love it! I don’t usually go for frills but the way the pleather is ruffled to create a flower was so appealing.

hot pink top

I wore my houndstooth coat with black pants. The surprise element was the fuchsia dolman-sleeve top I wore under my jacket. The infinity scarf came with the coat! What a deal!

Jacket: Macy’s
Top: JC Penney’s
Jeans: Banana Republic
Shoes: Thrifted
Cuff: Greenbelts
Purse: Flea market

Whenever I wear this top, people say, “wow that’s bright.” I’m not sure it’s a compliment but it’s a sign I’m getting noticed! What do you wear that gets you noticed?

Houndstooth Coat and Furla Tote

I was taking a shortcut through Macy’s a few weeks ago when I found this wonderful houndstooth coat. It was in the junior’s department so it wasn’t expensive anyway, but it was half off too. And because I checked into Macy’s with my FourSquare phone app, I got an extra 15% discount. I think it came to about $20 total.

Scarf: Toronto street vendor
Pants: See by Chloé
Shoes: Seychelles
Bag: Furla

Notice the great forest green tote bag I’m carrying? My dad gave it to me! He was working for a client who was giving away some “things she never used” and he saw the purse. He was pretty sure it was a good name brand. Plus it was made in Italy. He took a chance and brought it to Florida with him.

When we met there a couple of months ago he handed it over. Wasn’t that thoughtful? It didn’t cost him anything but it would have been so easy for him to overlook. I’m glad he has an eye for quality and style. Thanks Dad!

I like pairing black and white with pops of bright color. What are your favorite color combinations? Any cool freebies come your way recently?
