Hot and Cold: Jovovich Hawk Dress

I’m getting good use out of my floral Jovovich-Hawk dress. I recently wore it to work and styled it with orange tights and yellow shoes. I got the color inspiration from a kids’ painting easel that I saw in a children’s store in a mall.

I put on my dress added a brown belt. When I left the house, I realized how cold it was! It’s almost summer, but it’s still chilly in Seattle in the mornings. Seems strange since the rest of the country is in the middle of a heat wave. I grabbed my go-to safari jacket and warmed up the outfit, proving that this Jovovich-Hawk dress is a three-season number.

Polka-dot Jovovich: Five New Ways

About three weeks ago I styled my black and beige Jovovich-Hawk dress from Target’s Go International Designer Collective. I wasn’t totally thrilled with it. The boots were a bit schlumpy, the blue tights were too Avatar. It wasn’t horrible, but didn’t love what I’d done with the outfit. And if you don’t love an outfit, your whole day might be thrown off.

Instead of giving up (I’m too stubborn for that), I thought I’d try to redeem myself. So today, I’m sharing five new options with you—including a couple of unbelted looks (which I’d previously said wouldn’t work).

This is probably my favorite variation: I added a red patent belt, black tights, and high-heel Oxford’s. I wore this to work.

Next, I boldly removed the belt. I thought this would look sort of tent-like, and I guess it does, but not in a bad way. This is a very comfortable option; the lack of belt really changes the look of the outfit. I’d wear it to work this way too, or to lunch with friends.

Then, I replaced the tights with leggings and added bright red ballet flats. This is much more casual, but extremely comfortable. I feel a bit like a French mime, but I’m not sure why. I’m having a hard time pin-pointing it. I’d wear this on a Saturday to run errands and buy groceries.

Back to the belt. I chose a plain black elastic belt. I removed the leggings and tried a bare-legged look with faux-suede boots. I’d wear this to dinner or dancing. For me, bare legs and a short shirt wouldn’t work at work.

Finally, I traded the boots for open-toed shoes. I added an orange clutch to see how else I could use a splash of color. I’ll wear this to dinner when the weather improves. It’s summer but not too summer-y, if you know what I mean. I wanted to see if I could style this dress for various seasons and occasions. And I’m happy with my new options. What do you think? How would you style this?

Here’s a poem to celebrate spring and National Poetry Month:

Spring is like a perhaps hand
by e. e. cummings

Spring is like a perhaps hand
(which comes carefully
out of Nowhere)arranging
a window,into which people look(while
people stare
arranging and changing placing
carefully there a strange
thing and a known thing here)and

changing everything carefully

spring is like a perhaps
Hand in a window
(carefully to
and from moving New and
Old things,while
people stare carefully
moving a perhaps
fraction of flower here placing
an inch of air there)and

without breaking anything.

Seeing Spots: Target Dress #3

I can’t believe it’s taken me so long to wear the third of four dresses I bought from Target. This is also a GO International Designer Collective piece—and my second Jovovich-Hawk. It’s basically the same cut and fabric as the other Jovovich-Hawk I bought. I debated the merits of buying two very similar dresses, but the different color and pattern convinced me.

I’d like to try this dress with black tights and a bright belt. Or red tights and black mary janes. I also think I will be able to skip the tights and wear sandals to make this more spring-y. Sure, it’s a dark fabric, but it’s so gauzy that I think I can wear it throughout the summer.

When I try this dress the other ways, I’ll be sure to post pictures! It’s important for me to get value out of my clothes and mix and match them for endless possibilities. How else would you style this dress?

Boho Jovo: Three New Ways

When I first posted about the Jovovich-Hawk dress I bought at Target, I promised to style it a few different ways to show you how to get more mileage out of one piece. As promised, here are three ways I’ll wear this dress in the coming months:

For cooler spring weather, I’ll wear tights. This dress has so many colors in it that I can choose tights in maroon, orange, marigold, olive, brown, or cream. And as long as the ground stays dry, I can wear sandals. Open-toed shoes and tights don’t really go together—and that’s exactly why I like this combination. It’s a bit unexpected. I swapped out the olive belt for a brown one because I didn’t want to match my belt to my tights. This should look effortless, not planned.

For summer, this is going to be such a cool, comfortable dress. I can’t wait. I won’t need tights. (In case you’re wondering: No, I’m not wearing white tights. That’s just how pale my legs are!) I wore a bright skinny belt because it lightens up the outfit and will be more comfortable in the heat. I like wide belts, but they can get a bit restrictive.

When fall hits, I’ll need tights again. Any of the aforementioned colors will do; I chose orange because it reminds me of autumn. I intentionally wore a brown belt a shade different than the brown boots. I admit: This has a bit of a swashbuckler feel to it. Ahoy maties! I will be sure to wear this on Dress Like a Pirate Day (or is that Talk Like a Pirate Day?).

Boho Jovo: Target Dress #1

I’m really excited to share the first of the four dresses I bought at Target last Sunday. These were part of the GO International Designer Collective. Target brought back a couple of dozen of the dresses they’ve sold over the past five years. They have a range of designers represented: Rodarte, Thakoon, Libertine, Zac Posen, and more.

I chose this flowy, floral bohemian-inspired Jovovich-Hawk number. It was a tent so I belted it with an olive-green fabric stretch belt. I’m not used to such light, airy colors and fabric so I added wine-colored tights. They pick up the purply-wine flowers in the fabric. Just for fun, I wore peep-toe pumps. These Aerosoles and are so comfortable! The rubber sole means I won’t fall when I walk on hard surfaces (always a plus).

I’m looking forward to trying this dress with olive tights and tan platform pumps and orange tights and brown knee-high boots. Maybe even bare legs—but dang it’s short! When I try those combinations, I’ll be sure to post the looks for you. And stay tuned for the other three looks. Coming soon to a laptop near you.
