Primary Colors

I’m actually surprised that these neon pants are still in rotation. I bought them over a year ago and thought they’d be a fad. But at $10, I didn’t mind.

Top: H&M
Pants: The Gap
Upcycled belt: Couch Guitar Straps
Shoes: Flexx
Ring: Etsy Rain craft fair

Well, I love the boyfriend cut and how comfortable they are. And, despite being painfully bright, I like the color. Definitely noticeable. Every time  I wear them I get compliments–or at least comments!

upcycled belt

Today, instead of wearing neutrals, I went primary. The complementary color to yellow is blue, so I thought that would work. And for fun, I added a red vinyl belt. It’s made from deadstock (unused materials) and would have been a VW seat but sat in a warehouse, unneeded, until the Couch Guitar Straps company rescued the fabric and turned it into belts and guitar straps.

green accessory

I was trying for an all-color, no black outfit. I did, at least, stick to neutral footwear. Green is a secondary color but I managed to wear by green nerds ring (it’s made of tiny candy set in resin). Not edible, but really fun.

On a side note, now that my hair is longer I’ve been using my Hana flat iron a lot more. I love the results and I’m glad I had the chance to try it as my hair was growing out.

I joined the Anything & Everything blog hop at My Thrifty Chic, Monday Bloom at DC in Style, Style Sessions at Style Elixir and Visible Monday at Not Dead Yet. Check out what everyone else is wearing!

Rock ‘n’ Roll Look

After all these years, I haven’t narrowed down my look. I like boho, quirky, gothic, punky, or even preppy-inspired outfits. I dress for my mood. Still, there are certain outfits that I feel good in, and certain looks that make me feel tough. This is one of them.

Blazer: Laundry by Shelli Segal via thrifted
Jeans: See by Chloé
Boots: Old Navy

It’s chic, with a rock ‘n’ roll vibe. It has masculine qualities, but is very much a woman’s outfit. Even if it doesn’t look badass, it makes me feel badass. It’s Joan Jett and Chrissy Hynde all rolled into one.

It has a lot of my favorite pieces (blazer, heels, jeans) but it’s a new take on those items (embellished, booties, yellow).

What types of clothes do you feel best wearing?

Thrifty Thursday: Remixing Mustard Jeans

I’m wearing my skinny yellow jeans again today. I paired them once before with orange and white. Today I chose complementary colors: yellow and purple.

yellow pants

T-shirt: Target ($3)
Pants: See by Chloe ($30)
Shoes: Payless ($15)
Sunglasses: Target: ($9)
Cuff: Greenbelts ($15)

I picked up this shirt at Target, on the deep discount rack. I figured for $3 it was at least gym-worthy. I’ve worn it a few times already and I like how it goes well with yellow. It’s slimcut but loose enough to stay comfortable on hot days. The darker top creates a completely different look compared to the last time I wore these pants. I was so happy to score the pants online (they were normally $200).

Mellow Yellow

This month’s Everybody, Everywear challenge is yellow. Jackpot! I’ve had a crush on yellow for a few months now. If you had asked me a year ago to put together a yellow outfit, I’d be hard-pressed to do so. Today, I could hardly decide what to choose: my mustard skinny jeans? My buttery boatneck sweater? The lemon yellow handkerchief dress? I even have yellow shoes and a yellow tote.

yellow dress

I chose this dress for a couple of reasons: 1) I really like it 2) I’ve worn it only once. I’m taking the day off of the 30 for 30 challenge today so I can participate in EBEW. Tomorrow, I’ll wear my final outfit. After wearing the same mix of clothing for a month, I’m ready to give other pieces a go. So starting with this one, I’m going to try a month of wearing only the things in my closet that a) I’ve never worn, or b) I’ve worn only once or twice. I got the idea from Carmen when she did a guest post on this blog a few months ago.

Earrings: Premier Designs
Shoes: Nine West

I bought this dress from a small Seattle shop that I can no longer find. Boo! They had a lot of cute dresses and an online store too. But the best bargain isn’t a bargain at all if it doesn’t get used. Last time I wore this, I remember being slightly acutely aware of its body-hugging shape, so I added a 3/4 length blazer. This time, I’m going for it! It will be perfect for the burlesque show I’m going to this weekend. And I’ll be taking this with me to Vegas. It’s similar in style to a Hervé Leger bandage dress, but without the $1200 price tag.

Days 13 to 15

Day 13: I went for brunch with Mr. Jean of all Trades today. The sun was shining and we actually ate outside. So nice! I paired the white jeans with a bright green top. I wore my yellow sandals and carried my Shiraleah vegan cross-body bag. I’m really surprised at how much these yellow shoes go with.

Top: H&M
Jeans:Lucky Brand
Shoes: Aerosoles
Bag: Shiraleah
Sunglasses: Target

Day 14: Here’s my reversible skirt (the same one I wore on Day 8). The other side has an Indian-inspired print; this one has cartoon characters and is Japanese-inspired. I wore this top for Day 3, which also happened to be the Bloggers Do It Better Neon + Neutral challenge.

day 14

Top: JC Penneys
Skirt: Zand Amsterdam
Shoes: Naturalizer
Bag: Snap Design

Day 15: Halfway thought the challenge (not that I’m counting)! This is the tunic I wore on Day 5, but today I paired it with the gray jeans from Day 6. You can see the repeats now, although I still have one dress I have yet to debut.

day 15

Tunic: Damselfly
Jeans: Bluenotes
Belt: Thrifted
Cuff: Thrifted
Bag: Snap Design
Shoes: Timberland

Thrifty Thursday: Mustard and Orange

Something’s gotten into me lately. In the past couple of months I’ve purchased a yellow dress, yellow tote bag, and now these yellow skinny jeans. I like yellow. I never really used to. This time last year, I didn’t own a single yellow thing.

I had a pair of skinny yellow jeans in the 80s, and these reminded me of good times in middle school, senior public, junior high, or whatever you call it. I found this pair online. They’re See by Chloe and were close to $200 before they went on sale. As luck would have it, only my size was available—and they were reduced to $30.

They were on my doorstep when I returned from Santa Fe. So with sunshine on my mind, I assembled this get-up.

Top: Old Navy ($10)
Pants: See by Chloe ($30)
Shoes: Target ($15)
Scarf: Street vendor in NYC ($5)
Sunglasses: Target ($10)
Bracelet and Necklace: Street artist in Santa Fe ($25 each)

To qualify for a thrifty outfit, the total has to come in at under $100. This outfit does—if you don’t count the jewelry. And jewelry is optional (compared to, say, a shirt), so I’m going to let this slide.

I got to try a couple of turquoise pieces that I bought in Santa Fe. I think the necklace and bracelet work well with yellow and orange (complimentary colors and all). Just for fun, I added animal print ballet flats. How do you wear animal prints? Are there certain colors you stay away from?
