Embracing Mom Jeans

For years, I steered clear of light-wash, high-waisted, tapered jeans (also known as Mom jeans). In fact, I helped my mom ditch that style for a more modern, dark-wash, bootcut version.

I still don’t want pleated jeans, and a tapered ankle with extra fabric in the hip isn’t the most flattering cut; however, I’m digging the light wash for summer–and the bit of lycra in this pair is comfortable, as is the higher waist.

Jeans: Thrifted
Shoes: Payless
Necklace: Macy’s

I bought these at Goodwill–intentionally! I was reading a fellow Seattle blogger’s post about the benefits of mom jeans and thought I’d look for something with the butt-lifting properties she wrote about.

The key here, I think, is that I am not wearing a quilted cat-themed vest. Ha! No, the key is cuffing the pants, throwing on some heels, and making the look carefree and fun.

I chose sky-high platform wedges in a fun blue faux-suede.

Would you try mom jeans, version II: The remix?

I’m linking up with Visible monday today. Check out what the others are wearing.

  1. These jeans don’t look Mom at all to me – you look fabulous! Thanks for sharing with Visible Monday, and thanks for the jean tips (and no quilted cat vest for me : > )

  2. This post is great! You picked the perfect pair for your butt haha. Thanks for the link 😉

It’s funny we both have had the same relationship with birkenstocks! So wishy-washy. They are amazingly comfortable, so I think I’ll keep mine around even if this latest trend isn’t very long winded.

    • Thank you for the great tips! I never would have tried mom jeans.

I hope you do keep your Birkenstocks, either to wear in a non-fashiony way, or to save for the next time they come back (and like everything else, they will 🙂 )

Yup, it’s all in the wearing! You look pretty contemporary-spiffy, and charmingly beautiful as always. And really, having legs like yours doesn’t hurt at all! Given who your mom is, it’s a challenge to “wear her jeans” … she still rocks denim like nobody’s business!
    Fun post!

  4. They don’t look like the mom jeans you made me get rid of. Yours are fantastic; I need a pair like that. Also, moms used to tuck their tops and shirts into them and since they went up to the waist, it made our rear ends look huge. 😦 I like how you wear your top over the jeans and have folded up the cuff, so stylish with platforms. ♥

    • You’re right. These are the good kind 🙂 The term “mom” jeans isn’t really accurate. I wore them too in my university days. I think sometimes moms who don’t watch how styles evolve, keep their clothes past when they are “in.” But anyone can be guilty of that! For a classic cut, that’s fine, but like you said, with a tucked in top the proportions are all off!
