Dress Up, Dress Down: Striped T

I bought this striped t-shirt at Mexx when I was in Vancouver a month ago. Mexx is a neat store but they aren’t in the USA–so I make sure to visit when I go to Canada.

I first wore it to dinner with the Mister. White jeans seem to dress up a T and make colors pop.

T-shirt: Mexx
Jeans: Lucky Brand
Sandals: Flexx
Sunglasses: Street vendor
Cuff: Claire’s

Later, I wore it with denim shorts for a more casual look. I like to get a lot of use out of my clothes and wearing things in different ways is a good way to get mileage without being repetitive.

Shorts: Calvin Klein
Sandals: Payless
Purse: Microsoft Company Store

I think this top would look great with dark denim too or kelly green capri pants. I have a denim pencil skirt that I’ll try this with next.

How do you wear t-shirts? How else would you style this top?

Happy Independence Day

Happy 4th of July! Today is Independence Day in America, my adopted home.

American flags

When I looked up Independence Day on Wikipedia I saw a long list of places that celebrate independence. What a happy thought! To be autonomous and free! The 4th of July celebrates the Declaration of Independence, signed on July 4th, 1776, when thirteen American colonies declared themselves independent and no longer part of the British empire.

George Washington, the country’s first president, celebrated the 4th by giving his troops double rations of rum. So raise a toast to Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness!

Hot Pink Swapped Wrap

I picked this wrap up at a clothing exchange a month or two ago. At first I thought it was coming apart and then I realized it was made with thumb holes. I love it. Putting my thumbs through the thumb holes keeps the sleeves in place.

pink wrap

Cardigan: Swapped
Tank: JC Penneys
Jeans: Banana Republic
Boots: G by Guess
Earrings: Sears

This is a stretchy cotton cardigan wrap that I can let hang loose, but it’s versatile too. I can tie it and I can even throw one of the panels over my shoulder for a scarf effect.

thumb holes

Today, I wore this with cuffed jeans and boots. Cuffing straight-leg or skinny jeans is a great way to show off your footwear and change the look of your pants. Oh, and I’ve linked up with Visible Monday. Check out how everyone else is getting noticed!

Happy Canada Day!

July 1st marks Canada Day. On this day in 1867, the British North America Act passed, forming the modern state of Canada. At that time, just three colonies made up Canada: Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and the Province of Canada. The Province of Canada was split into two provinces named Quebec and Ontario. Canada kept evolving and now has ten provinces nad three territories. By 1949, the last province, Newfoundland, joined. Nunavut, the newest territory was created in 1999 by dividing the Northwest Territories.

canadian flags

Canada has probably enriched your life, even if you’ve never been there. Canadian inventions include:

  • The Blackberry
  • The television camera
  • The telephone (Alexander Graham Bell was born in Scotland, but he lived in Brantford, Ontario when he invented the phone)
  • Basketball
  • The snowblower
  • The Wonderbra
  • The paint roller
  • Trivial Pursuit

A few more interesting Canadian facts:

  • Canada is the second largest country (in land mass)
  • Canada is a bilingual nation, with English and French being the two national languages
  • Canada (or kanata) is an Iroquoian word meaning village
  • The border between Canada and the USA is the world’s longest international border
  • Canada is a parliamentary democracy. It’s not a socialist nation, but offers social programs such as healthcare, unemployment insurance, education, and old age pensions.

So on this day, raise a drink (a rye and ginger or Rickard’s Red perhaps) and toast 145 years of Canada!

Wanna Know a Secret?

A few weeks ago I was on my way to lunch with my friend Dianne when we saw a sign in front of an office park that read “Sample Sale.”

Needless to say, we stopped to take a look. What we found was Best Kept Secret, a store in Kirkland, WA that sells samples. Garment salespeople buy one of each item so they can show–and sell– to department stores and boutiques. Buying one of everything cuts into their profits. Best Kept Secret sells the one-offs at 15% above wholesale. The goods are consigned and when they sell, the salespeople recoup their costs. Best Kept Secret keeps the 15%.

Top: Best Kept Secret
Pants: YMI via Goodwill
Boots: Old Navy
Cuff: Greenbelts
Earrings: DIY
Cat: Petfinder

The store was huge so we took our time. I bought an olive-green cardigan, a plum drape-necked top with ruching, and a statement ring. I recently wore the top and I love it. It’s super soft and really comfortable.

The store includes a wide variety of styles and brands–from juniors to, well, seniors! They have men’s, women’s, and kids’ clothing, shoes, and accessories. Most women’s samples are in the size 6 range, but fit varies so if you’re between 4 and 10, take a look. You’ll find things that you’d see in Nordstrom and Macy’s, but for about half price.

Have you ever been to a sample sale?

Saying Goodbye to my Red Jeans

Here I go with my red jeans again. It’s funny: In university, I briefly dated a guy who wore red jeans all the time. At first I thought they were cool pants but they were in such heavy rotation, it got kinda old. I’m afraid I’m doing the same thing.

Jacket: Thrifted
Top: Forgotten
Jeans: Just USA
Booties: Old Navy
Watch: Street vendor in Florida

So, I promise you that this is the last you’ll see of my red jeans until fall. I’ll give them–and you–a break. However, in this last shot, I’m looking at my watch thinking, “how long until I can wear these again?”

Thrifty Graphic Dress

I snagged this graphic dress for $5 at Goodwill a few weeks ago. It’s a Forever 21 number, so it’s worth about $25. If it were a designer number, it would be ten times that. But I liked it and it fit. Two important criterion. I featured this dress in my post on Be In Style. If you haven’t read it, have a look and learn about how I find good, thrifted items.

graphic dress

Dress: Forever 21 via Goodwill
Clutch: Coach via outlet mall
Shoes: Nanette LePore
Cuff: Claire’s

The shoes were too cute to turn down. They were about 70% off–online. My first pair of Nanette Lepore shoes! This is the danger of having sale emails delivered daily. But I was in the market for comfy, dressy wedges and these fit the bill. I love the silver heel!

Oh, if you start seeing more collages in my posts it’s because I discovered PicMonkey–a free (at least for now), fun, online photo-editing tool. Try it and let me know what you think! It’s sort of a Photoshop lite, and seems to be all I need for blogging.

Visiting Vancouver

You might remember the girls’ trip I took with my friends last year. Well, we did it again. This time we chose Vancouver, British Columbia. It was out first international trip, even though it was probably the closest we’ve stayed to home.

The first thing we did when we arrived was check out the view from our hotel. We stayed at The Westin and it was wonderful. We were steps from Stanley Park (Cheryl ran its 6-mile perimeter during the trip), and we were only a few blocks from Robson Street, a popular shopping destination.

view from the hotel

The second thing we did was find a patio and get drinks and food. I loved being able to order a rye and ginger and have the waitress know exactly what I wanted (rye whiskey–like Crown Royal–and ginger ale). The brews were local and the food was spicy. Yum.

drinks

After sustenance comes shopping. We hit Granville Street (we were saving Robson till Saturday) and looked around stores like Bedo, Plum, and Spank. We found a store that was promoting the Beagle Freedom Project in the windows display but the shop itself was closed.

Boboli had a unique stone entrance. They are a high-end boutique that carries Armani, Robert Cavalli, La Perla, and more. We thought just being near such designers made us more sophisticated.

Laura, Jean, and Cheryl at Boboli

The second day of our trip was also shopping-focused (which is why Autumn chose to visit Stanley Park and the Vancouver Aquarium–sorry Autumn!). We fought through the crowds at Brandy Melville (one of the only non-Canadian stores we visited).

Brandy Melville

We visited the oldest commercial corporation in North America: The Bay. The Hudson’s Bay Company was founded in 1670, and began as a fur trading operation. The Bay, and its quintessential striped logo are part of my childhood. Cheryl was going to buy some perfume but thought it might not fit in her suitcase.

Laura found great things at Bedo. Cheryl wasn’t as lucky. You can see her in the background, walking back to the hotel, empty-handed.

Laura's haul

Vancouver is a true metropolis and has a great mix of old and new buildings. We enjoyed the architecture and public art. Every time I visit Vancouver I vow to go to the Vancouver Art Gallery but the weather’s always too nice to justify going indoors.

old and new buildings

We got all dolled up for dinner and an improv show. On our way out, the valet offered to take our picture. I have three posed shots, but a funny comment from a passerby cracked us up and this last, candid photo shows us looking more genuine and happy. Can you believe we didn’t plan our outfits. Total fluke.

On our third day we explored more along the waterfront. Vancouver is a beautiful city, and a lot of fun. People rode bikes, picnicked, and played games. The towering condos offer a luxe life for those with a lot of money. It’s an expensive city too.

The public art brightened up an already fabulous day.

We even stumbled across the sculpture from the 2010 Winter olympics. I remember this piece from the opening and closing ceremonies. The flame is out now but it burned for the duration of the games.

The trip to Vancouver was so fun, but much too short. I’ll be back again soon. North Vancouver, Kitsilano, and Granville Island await.

Sweater in Summer

I’m waiting for summer weather to arrive in Seattle. It’s hit or miss until July, so the fall, winter, spring wardrobe I have gets lots of use. I guarantee this photo isn’t from the vaults. You can see the gorgeous flowers blooming so you know it’s not autumn.

Sweater: Thrifted
Leggings: Kensie
Boots: Mia

Instead of waiting for summer, I added a bit of blonde to my hair. There’s not enough sun around to lighten my hair, so I got a bit of help from a bottle. Do you do anything to get “summer hair”?

Pea Green Thrifted Sweater

I picked up this gem at Goodwill a few weeks ago. The clerk said she’d talked someone else out of this top the day before because it might easily snag. Lucky for me, the shirt was still on the racks (in the display actually), and I bought it.

green sweater

Sweater: Goodwill
Pants: Billy Jeans via swapped
Necklace: Swapped
Shoes: Seychelles

It’s a strange shape, with its asymmetrical handkerchief detailing. I’m still debating whether it’s flattering so I wore it with fitted pants to contrast the billowy nature of the sweater. I also added a long, silver necklace to elongate the look.

detail of necklace

The sweater is handmade in Israel–something I don’t often see–and it’s cotton. After standing next to a Japanese maple for my close-up I realized how great this color green will look with maroon. Next time, I’ll break out of the black rut and try a complementary purplish hue.

Since this is thrifty and noticeable, I’ve linked up with Thrifters Anonymous and Visible Monday.
