Days 16 to 18

Day 16: Here’s a new piece I haven’t worn yet in the challenge. It’s actually a dress, but I thought it was too low-cut for work. Plus, it’s breezy and cool today, so I needed to layer. This cardigan isn’t part of my thirty pieces; I wore it for warmth. My bracelet is made from a bicycle tire! Most of the bracelets for sale were black (obviously) so I picked this one since it seemed unique. It’s made from a red tire.

Day 17: I’m wearing the same pink top that I wore on Monday, but since I worked at home today and went out with non-work friends in the evening, let’s keep this secret between us. Even though I have a limited wardrobe this month, I’m trying to keep each week fresh and non-repeating. The outfit itself is pretty plain so I jazzed it up with a DIY t-shirt infinity scarf and a zebra-striped bag.

day 17

Top: JC Penneys
Capris: True Originals
Shoes: Timberland
Bag: Boodlebags
Scarf: DIY (I made it)
Bracelets: Boutique in Portland

Day 18: Here are my white jeans again. I wore them on the weekend, but no one from work knows that. I dressed them up with my boho top today. Even though it’s Canada Day, and not quite the 4th of July, I thought it was time to show a bit of patriotism. I’m in red, white and blue—even the wall and chair match.

Street Style: White Denim for Summer

I’m on a roll. Two days of street style! I work with Suchitra and I am always inspired by her outfits, whether she’s in casual jeans and a sweater, a flouncy dress, or traditional Indian salwar kameez (a tunic-style top and pants), she always looks so stylish.

suchitra

There are so many times I’ve wanted to capture her fashions and post them here. I finally did so recently. Suchitra shows how to mix denim. The white, military-style jacket is so fresh and crisp. It’s a perfect cover-up for cooler days or breezy office AC. Her dark capris contrast nicely. Dark denim is a great casual Friday office go-to.

A bright top and silver strappy sandals complete the look. Head to toe fabulous!

Street Style: Par for the Course

Meet Gus. I saw him 100 yards away and had to ask him about his amazing pants. I love pink on guys, but I usually only see it in the form of a tie or maybe a shirt. When Gus decided he needed pink pants, he went to a reliable source: a golf shop. If I’ve learned anything about golfers, it’s that they embrace color and patterns. You don’t have to be a golfer to borrow golf style.

pink pants

I really like how these pants are paired with a simple gray t-shirt with a subtle pink stripe that picks up the color of the pants. A dark shoe would be too severe for this outfit. Gus knew that, and chose a summery, white sandal.

It’s so refreshing that in Seattle, the land of fleece and khakis, there are guys like Gus to brighten our days.

Days 13 to 15

Day 13: I went for brunch with Mr. Jean of all Trades today. The sun was shining and we actually ate outside. So nice! I paired the white jeans with a bright green top. I wore my yellow sandals and carried my Shiraleah vegan cross-body bag. I’m really surprised at how much these yellow shoes go with.

day 13

Top: H&M
Jeans:Lucky Brand
Shoes: Aerosoles
Bag: Shiraleah
Sunglasses: Target

Day 14: Here’s my reversible skirt (the same one I wore on Day 8). The other side has an Indian-inspired print; this one has cartoon characters and is Japanese-inspired. I wore this top for Day 3, which also happened to be the Bloggers Do It Better Neon + Neutral challenge.

day 14

Top: JC Penneys
Skirt: Zand Amsterdam
Shoes: Naturalizer
Bag: Snap Design

Day 15: Halfway thought the challenge (not that I’m counting)! This is the tunic I wore on Day 5, but today I paired it with the gray jeans from Day 6. You can see the repeats now, although I still have one dress I have yet to debut.

day 15

Tunic: Damselfly
Jeans: Bluenotes
Belt: Thrifted
Cuff: Thrifted
Bag: Snap Design
Shoes: Timberland

Bumble Bee Tattoo

When I was about five years old, my mom and I went to the park one beautiful summer day. We played on the swings and jungle gym and then sat in the grass to relax before going home. While we sat there in shorts and t-shirts, legs extended, a giant bumble bee landed on my mom’s thigh.

She didn’t panic, but rather explained that bees are good. They pollinate flowers and make honey. This guy was just resting and wouldn’t sting her unless she angered him. Made sense. And growing up, I remembered that lesson and ignored bees when they came around. I didn’t hit them and they didn’t sting me. It was a perfect arrangement. After what seemed like forever, the bee did fly off, and we went about our day.

As an adult, I reminded my mom of that event and to my surprise she told me she was scared out of her mind that the bee had landed on her. She didn’t want to make a negative impression and give me a lifelong fear of bees so she remained calm. Funny, I’d been thinking of getting a bee tattooed on my thigh to remind me about my mom’s common sense that day and how I should also not be afraid of things. Now, the bee symbolizes a whole lot more. It’s also about keeping calm when things get scary. “Calmon sense” if you will.

beeThis past March, a bumble bee flew into my home. What she was doing outside on such a cold day is beyond me. I caught her in a glass, photographed her, and let her go. This, I felt, was a sign. Time to get the tattoo.

It took me another month or so to find an artist. I chose Suzy Todd from Two Birds Tattoo. I booked an appointment for early June. Suzy was fantastic. She drew a bee based on my bee photo and tattooed it on my thigh, exactly where the bee landed on my mom so many years ago. I’ve been waiting to show you. It’s ready now.

It’s a life-size bee tattoo, so it’s not very big. tattooPerhaps the size of a quarter. It’s a great reminder of what my mom taught me about nature (that it’s important), and what she kept to herself (that she was scared). Now, when I’m worried about something, or scared, I think of remaining calm in spite of my fears. I am reminded to live beyond my fear.

You’ll see the bee (in relation to the rest of my leg) in future outfit posts when I wear shorts or minis. The only problem now is that the bee is all alone. I think I might need to give her some tattoo flowers soon.

Stylish Blogger Award

I was recently awarded the Stylish Blogger Award from Patti at Learn More Everyday. Patti writes an inspiring blog, full of joy and reflection. She loves nature and the beauty around her. I appreciate the nomination and recommend her blog.

In turn, I’m paying it forward. I plan to meet the rules by recommending 15 bloggers for the award. It’s a great way to share blogs with readers and be part of a community.

The Adventures of Lucky Duck is a bird’s-eye view of travel, technology, fashion, and more. The brains behind the bird, writes this tongue-in-beak lifestyle blog in a way that will make you laugh—and also show you a thing or two.

The Sustainable Fashionista shows how to make ethical fashion choices and still have fun with your wardrobe. She chronicles her ethical finds and the challenges of finding ethical pieces.

And finally—and I know I’m taking the easy way out—I’d like to point you to the Seattle Style Bloggers page, courtesy of Lindsay Living. Here, you’ll find over 20 Seattle-area bloggers (including Lindsay) who are smart, funny and stylish—despite living in a rain-soaked corner of the country.

Here are seven stylish secrets about me that most people don’t know:

  • When I was young, say 5 or 6, I used to name my clothing after songs.
  • I’m a lefty, but I play right-handed guitar (not well, mind you).
  • In 7th grade I was a member of the Fashion Club.
  • In middle school, I enjoyed shop class more than home economics.
  • I dropped out of high school, completed my final year via correspondence, and went to university on time, with my peers.
  • I once had hair extensions; they drove me crazy. I lasted 6 weeks.
  • I have a wedding ring tattooed on my left ring finger.

Days Ten to Twelve

Day 10: I second-guessed myself when I added boots to my 30 pieces. Boots? In June? Well, I’m so glad I did. We’ve had rain and cool temperatures and the boots have come in handy. Today I braved the crisp weather in bare legs but I did keep my toes warm with my thrifted boots.

day 10

Dress: Express
Tank: Wet Seal
Scarf-as-belt: Thrifted
Boots: Naturalizer via thrifted
Sequined purse: Swapped
Recycled Leather Cuff: Greenbelts

Day 11: I caught a bit of sun today. Don’t worry—I wore sunscreen. It was a great day to take off from work. I walked my dog, enjoyed a leisurely latté, and stopped to take pictures of wildlife at Lake Larson. I saw a blue heron, ducks, and red-winged blackbirds. No turtles today though. Later I went to a concert with a friend. I felt cool enough to go from the lake to the show—mainly because of my rock ‘n’ roll cuff. This is my first repeat in the 30 for 30. On Day 1 I wore this dress. This time, I skipped the belt and swapped out my accessories.

day 11

Dress: Wish, Seattle
Tank: Wet Seal
Shoes: Flexx
Purse: Shiraleah
Cuff: Greenbelts
Necklace: Thrifted

Day 12: It’s Gay Pride weekend in Seattle. I met friends for drinks in Capitol Hill this evening and I wanted to be colorful for the celebration. I wore a tank top with multicolored sequins and painted my nails to match. I added blue and purple temporary streaks to my hair, but I have to say, in the photos, it kind of looks gray. Not exactly what I had in mind.

My Modern Dining Room

A while back, I wrote about the Tulip table and Panton chairs I ordered online. I promised to write about them when they arrived, and I haven’t forgotten.

I love the pieces! I ordered the table from Lexington Modern and the chairs from Pretty Stores because they have great reproductions at decent prices. The chairs are sturdy, durable, and haven’t scratched. They wipe clean and would be a great outdoors as well. I wouldn’t leave them outside to get mossy or sun bleached, but they’re a great temporary outdoor seating alternative. Best of all, these are comfortable chairs. And if you can call a chair sexy, well this would be it.

three chairs

The table is great too. It was well packed and easy to assemble. I chose a marble top in case the wood veneer easily scratched. I have four chairs, but I set this up using only three so you can see the table pedestal more easily.

My only complaint—and it’s my own lack of foresight—is that I ordered the 36″ diameter table, not a larger size. With a small top, and a large base, sitting close to the table means my feet rest on the base. It’s not horrible, but if you buy a Tulip table, go for a 40″ diameter or larger size. I was afraid of ordering too big a table for my small dining area, but an extra few inches wouldn’t have mattered.

four chairs

The space is sparse, but I like that look. A bouquet of flowers on the table will brighten things up. I added a retro-style clock on the wall. It’s from Chiasso. The framed photo of the Space Needle is actually a 1960s Jazz album cover. I liked the photo and it matched the period of the rest of the room.

After changing everything in the room, my old chandelier looked out of place so I bought a simple black dome-shaped ceiling lamp from Ikea and swapped it out. I love my dining room now and I’m actually using it (as opposed to sitting on the sofa and eating dinner in front of the TV like I used to do).

FBFF: What Sets Bloggers Apart

I recently joined Fashion Beauty Friend Friday. This is a group effort; a lot of bloggers will be answering the same questions. Don’t forget to read all the other their answers too, over at ModlyChic.

Q: Since you began blogging do you notice a change in the types of things you gravitate towards while shopping?

A: Yes. For starters, I’m actually shopping less. I know it sounds counterintuitive, but I spend a lot of my spare time assembling outfits, taking pictures, and writing. There’s almost no time to shop. Fortunately I make time for it. However, I’ve become more interested in buying things that I can remix in many different ways, not things that work only as an “outfit.” Also, because I post about what I buy, I feel like my readers hold me accountable. I like to shop ethically (animal-free, fair-traded) and not overspend. I make smarter decisions knowing I have to ‘fess up online.

Q: Do you find, as a fashion blogger, that you dress differently from your family and friends? Do they comment on that?

A: Ha! Yeah, I get comments. It’s positive. Usually that I’m stylish or colorful. I don’t dress differently because I’m a blogger; dressing differently drew me to blogging. My husband sometimes says, “did you wear that today?” It’s his code for “wow, you’re creative” (that’s what I’m telling myself). I like bright tights and unusual color combinations. I’ve always loved clothes and fashion. To me, it’s an artistic way to express my moods.

Q: What’s the weirdest fashion that you secretly like, even if you aren’t bold enough to wear it?

A: Tights or socks with sandals. It’s so “ugly” it works, especially if done “right.” And because it’s a rule-breaker, there’s no right way to do it. I do think it should look intentional. Chunky heels and thick tights is a good bet. And go for color because, hey, you’re already in uncharted territory.

socks and sandals

Q: Looking at current trends – what would you like to try but need to build up the courage to do?

A: I’ll try any trend, as long as I truly like it. One thing I like but don’t try enough is mixing patterns. I feel like there’s so much room for error. And honestly, I’ve trained myself not to mix patterns so I often don’t think to try it. Now that I’ve written this, I’ll be more aware and give patten mixing a whirl.

Q: Toot someone’s horn – what fashion blogger out there inspires you with her bold fashion choices?

A: I’ve made a lot of online blogging friends, so it’s hard to decide. I recently met Julie from Mint and Mellow and admire her style. In fact, all the Seattle Style Bloggers I met that day are amazing women with wonderfully individual styles. You can see some of them (and links to their blogs) at my previous post, Seattle Style Bloggers Picnic.

Days 7 to 9

Day 7: I chose white jeans today because they’re so summery. I love the crispness of white and how it makes the other colors I’m wearing really stand out. White is nice because they look dressier than blue jeans, especially in a trouser cut. And since they’re thicker than a trouser, they’re not see-through. Always a plus.

day 7

Top: Macy’s
Jeans: Lucky Brand
Shoes: Aerosoles
Earrings: Target
Bracelets: Claire’s

Day 8: Today really felt like summer. It was almost 80 degrees. I wore the same shoes as yesterday, but paired them with a reversible skirt. Wait until you see it next week! I feel like I’m cheating on the 30 for 30. This twofer is a great travel piece. It’s one-size-fits-all because it has an adjustable snap waistband. I wore this lower on my hips so it wouldn’t be too short for work.

day 8

T-shirt: Victoria’s Secret
Skirt: Zand Amsterdam
Scarf: DIY (I made it)
Shoes: Aerosoles
Sunglasses: Convenience store in Santa Fe
Purse: Vintage Frye via thrifted
Bracelets: Claire’s

Day 9: Tennis anyone? I was on my way to work when I saw this miniature tennis court in a local park. Of course I didn’t play a game. I was alone. With a coffee. Wearing a maxi dress. I bought the dress at Fred Meyer, which is mostly a grocery store. I find that amusing. I styled my dress as a skirt by wearing a t-shirt over it. The dress is really low-cut and not office-appropriate. But it will be fine on the beach later in the challenge.

day 9

T-shirt: H&M
Jacket: Betsey Johnson via thrifted
Dress: Fred Meyer
Belt: Steve Madden
Sandals: Naturalizer
Earrings: DIY (and I have a spare pair for sale)
