Upcycling a Necklace

I bought a cheapie necklace on sale a few years ago and wore it only once. It was the wrong length, the charms weren’t in the right places, it just didn’t work. So, I thought about ways to change it. I like sculptural, asymmetrical pieces and figured I had nothing to lose by trying to change this long strand into something different. I grabbed a pair of needle-nose pliers and off I went.

Here’s the necklace on me so you can see how it lies. I also wore it on Day 6 of the 30 for 30 challenge.

I hadn’t planned on making earrings but I had extra chain and charms when I’d finished the necklace so I grabbed a few hook backs from my craft supplies and ended up with three new pairs!

If you have a before-and-after story to share, tell me in the comment and link to your post if you have one.

Days Four to Six

Day 4: Sun’s out! Finally. It wasn’t supposed to last long, so I took advantage of it and wore capris and this boho top. True casual Friday. I’m so used to thrifting and buying things on sale, that it felt weird when I forked over the full $29.99 for this top. It’s pretty versatile though and I’ve enjoyed it for two summers already.

day 4

Top: Metropark
Capris: True Originals
Shoes: Timberland
Purse: Nine West
Necklace: Gifted
Sunglasses: Target

Day 5: It rained pretty hard this morning but stopped in time for the Seattle Style Bloggers picnic. Still, most of the day, my outfit was hidden by my raincoat. I braved the temps to show off my tunic, but put my coat back on again. I’m so glad I added boots to my 30 for 30 mix.

day 5

Tunic: Damselfly, Seattle
Tights: Newport News
Belt: Ross Dress for Less
Boots: Naturalizer
Bracelets: Lucca, Seattle
Umbrella: Baby & Co.

Day 6: Hubby and I went to Sunlight Vegetarian Cafe for a delicious brunch. At least the sun was in the name of the restaurant; it sure wasn’t in the sky. I concealed my sweater behind my clutch for this photo. Trust me, I needed it today!

day 6

Seattle Style Bloggers Picnic

This past Saturday I got to meet other style bloggers in person. It was a great day. I love the blogging community but until now, I’ve been behind my PC writing, collaborating, sharing. Kimmie of Blue Paper Lanterns, and Lindsay of Lindsay Living organized a bloggers picnic and I was lucky enough to be invited.

Seattle Style Bloggers

L to R: Jess, Lindsay, Carolyn, Me, Julie, Chelsea, Irene, Kimmie

Of course, being Seattle, it was a cool, wet day—but that didn’t stop us. If people in Seattle waited for the sun, we’d never get anything done. We didn’t have sunshine, but we brightened up the skyline with our colorful, stylish outfits.

We had a lot of fun sharing ideas about thrifting, photography, and website technology. We ate, drank and exchanged email, twitter names and blog URLs. It was a great chance to meet like-minded women. Looks like the start of something good.

It’s Father’s Day!

Yesterday was Sushi Day and today is Father’s Day. It’s been quite a weekend! And I haven’t even published the post about the Seattle Fashion Bloggers meetup yet. First things first. In lieu of a card (although there is a parcel in the mail), I thought I’d write a little something about my dad.

jean and dad

Yes, that’s me with my dad a long time ago. We had a lot in common. Firstly, we both liked vests. Dive a little deeper, and you’d learn that I developed a love of animals from my dad. I learned a lot about photography too. In fact, the very first picture I ever took was of my dad (using his SLR). Here’s that shot. I was 7. He must have been 31.

doug

My dad and I also share a love of cars, specifically vintage German vehicles, like the 60s era Porsche 911. In a pinch, a Mercedes SLS will do the job.

dad benz

When I got married, my dad was there to approve of the event, contribute to it, and enjoy the celebration on the beach in California. He’s great friends with my husband, which is a relief to me.

wedding day

So, while my dad and I live miles and miles apart, we share a lot of commonalities. That keeps me thinking about my dad. Every time I use my camera, help out a little animal, or admire nice cars, he’s on my mind.

Happy Father’s Day, Dad!

Sushi Day

Today is Sushi Day. I didn’t make that up, but since sushi is one of my favorite foods, I’d thought I ‘d join in the celebration.

veggie sushi

As as vegan, you might wonder what the heck I eat at a sushi place. Well, a lot! My absolute favorite is the simple, yet delicious avocado roll. Kapa maki, cucumber rolls, are a nice crunchy treat too. A lot of Japanese restaurants will have some sort of veggie roll, usually carrots, asparagus, beets, or some other yummy combination wrapped in rice and nori. Nori is a type of seaweed and is high in protein, fiber, iodine, carotene, vitamins A, B and C, E, K, and calcium and iron. Screw you milk and organ meats! I’ve got nori!

I like agedashi tofu and edamame too. Edamame is boiled soy beans in the pod, lightly salted. Pop them out of their casing and enjoy. It’s really easy to make at home too. Trader Joe’s and other markets sell them frozen and ready to cook. They take just a few minutes to make. Tempura veggies are delicious too. Sometimes the batter contains eggs, so ask if you’re concerned about that. Seaweed salad, Yakisoba noodles (stir fried with veggie, not meat), and miso soup are also great choices.

sushi plates

I recently discovered the ninja roll at Bellevue’s Tuna House. It’s a spicy avocado roll with tempura on top. It’s becoming my new favorite. I also like eating at Hiroshi’s in Seattle’s Eastlake neighborhood. They have live Jazz on Fridays. The Seattle location of I Love Sushi is right on the waterfront and has a great view of Lake Union. Mashiko’s in West Seattle has a lot of vegan options, including all-veggie bento box meals. They also have a webcam so you can check out the bar in real-time.

The best part about Blue C Sushi is the conveyor belt. See it, take it, and eat it. The plates are color-coordinated to the price chart so you can keep track of your tab. Blue C also has mini Mighty O donuts. No, they’re not Japanese, but they are organic, vegan, and delicious. It’s a great little after-sushi dessert.

Don’t forget to order a nice hot sake with your meal. It’s a rice-base, alcoholic beverage. You can order it cold, but the hot version has a bit of kick. In the words of my dad, it’s potent!

Days One to Three

I’m back on the 30 for 30 challenge bandwagon! I’m really looking forward to remixing thirty items thirty different ways. I hope you join me (or follow along).

Day one: I started with a dress. It’s a bit low-cut for work so I added a tank underneath. This isn’t part of the 30 pieces but since undergarments don’t count, I’m not counting this. It’s a fine line. I picked up this dress at Wish, a cute seattle clothing and accessory store. It was on sale because they were moving from Greenwood to Ravenna.

day 1

Dress with belt: Wish
Purse: Ross Dress for Less
Sunglasses: Target
Necklace: Gifted
Bracelets: Damselfly
Shoes: Timberland

Day 2: I tried leggings today. As much as I love leggings (so-o comfortable), I don’t have a lot of long tops to wear with them. So I don’t wear them a lot. I’m not a big rule-follower, but if you wear leggings, cover your bum! I see people wearing leggings with short tops. Why? I don’t care about their “immodesty,” but it looks like they’re not wearing pants. Like they meant to add a skirt and left the house without one.

This breezy tunic works nicely with leggings. In fact, it’s the only way I’ve worn this top so far. I have a few ideas up my sleeve for variations, so keep an eye out for how I re-style it.

day 2

Tunic: eBay
Leggings: Newport News
Belt: Thrifted
Earrings: I made ’em
Shoes: Payless

Day 3: Today is also Bloggers do it Better day over at Pretty Shiny Sparkly. I thought I’d feed two birds with one hand by incorporating the neon and neutrals for BDIB into my 30 for 30 mix. I’ve never mixed these two items, so I’m happy to have taken the BDIB challenge too. You’ll see this skirt a few more times this month. Let me know which is your favorite.

day 3

Top: JC Penneys
Skirt: Swapped
Bag: Shiraleah
Necklace: Street vendor in Santa Fe
Bracelets: Damselfly
Shoes: Nine West

Neon and Neutral

Pretty Shiny Sparkly recently started a Bloggers do it Better movement to showcase real women with real style. I missed the first few opportunities to show how I would style color blocking, all white, and prep school (respectively, not all at once; that would be a real challenge!).

But I made it this time around and I’m showing how I chose to style neon and neutral. Pairing brights with neutrals is hot on the runway, and I like the look: Neutrals are a great way to handle the intensity of brights and the combination is modern and fresh. Neon and black is very intense and more retro (not that there’s anything wrong with that).

Have you tried neon recently, or does it give you flashbacks to the 80s?

Feminism in the Media

This month’s Feminist Fashion Blogger group post is about feminists in the media. It’s timely; I was reading the June edition of Glamour, the F-word was printed twice, in two interviews by two very different women.point of view

The first instance was in an interview with Rachel Maddow, host of MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show. Rachel is asked (by Katie Couric) if being gay influences what topics Maddow chooses to cover on her show. Maddow smartly replies that she’s never done the show as a straight person. The interview turns to how being a woman (in general) might influence the stories they cover.

Rachel responds with, “But if you were a feminist dude, maybe you’d make the same decisions. And if I were a pro-gay-rights straight person, maybe I’d make the same decisions, too. I don’t feel there’s anything about my experience of being gay that gives me more insight into “don’t ask, don’t tell,” for example. What does, is my understanding of the military. (p. 171)”

Later, in an interview with cover model Oliva Wilde, I read the second instance. Wilde, an actress, is talking about how she never wanted to become a journalist like her parents, Leslie and Andrew Cockburn. She goes on to say, “I can’t tell you how profound it’s been to realize that [my mother] is so within me…She’s gorgeous, and she taught me that a real feminist doesn’t apologize for her beauty. You can be a sexy, gorgeous woman, and be the smartest person in the room. (p. 186)”

Several things about these quotes made me smile. First, Glamour is interviewing smart women who unabashedly use the F-word. Second, by saying “if you were a feminist dude” Maddow raises the idea that feminism is open to everyone. It’s said casually, and in a positive tone that I hope will help readers of the magazine accept the idea of feminism in all forms (if they don’t already).

Finally, Wilde is a different type of role model for young feminists. She is reconciling the different parts of one’s self and saying you don’t have to look or act a certain way (or it’s okay if you do) to be a feminist. For readers who might think being feminists means giving up dresses and nail polish, I think Olivia subtly changes that perception.

Perhaps both of these mentions are incidental, but I found it encouraging and refreshing to read about these two women and see in print that they’re not afraid to speak honestly about feminism.

For everyone else’s posts about feminists in the media, check out the FFB blog.

It’s Back! 30 for 30 Summer Edition

The very first thing I did when I first started blogging back in January was sign up for the 30 for 30 challenge created by Kendie Everyday. What a great way to jumpstart my blog, put a bit of focus on my posts, and start thinking in new ways about spending versus shopping my own wardrobe. Here’s the recap of my winter version.

Well, Kendie is starting another challenge and I’ve jumped on board. I enjoyed the last one and I learned a lot. I’m looking forward to remixing summer items. I’m adding more dresses this time, more flat shoes, more tops, and fewer bottoms. I’m seasoned pro now!

Here’s what I’m wearing for the next 30 days. Don’t worry; you’ll get a better look at the pieces in the upcoming days and weeks.

9 tops

Nine tops in plains and patterns

5 dresses

5 dresses both long and short

7 bottoms

7 bottoms: 3 skirts and 4 pairs of pants

jackets

a cardi and a denim jacket

7 pairs of shoes

7 pairs of shoes

Care to join me? You don’t have to be a blogger to try it out. It’s easy and fun!

Khaki and Yellow

I really do wear a lot of blazers. When I wear jeans and a t-shirt, I feel horribly underdressed, especially for work. Throw on a blazer, and presto! Instant style. Today I wore a tried-and-true blazer over a yellow t-shirt and my go-to jeans. I felt I needed more color so I grabbed one of my vegan bags from my trip to Endless Knot a month or so ago. It wasn’t totally practical for work, but it held my essentials. My laptop was already at the office.

The only thing missing is lipstick. It’s funny how photos reveal things that a mirror doesn’t. So far, thanks to the self-portraits for this blog, I’ve noticed a few gaffes. I need to wear a camisole under my thin burgundy top (too transparent); I don’t look good in empire-waist dresses (too maternity-ish); I need to wear lipstick more often (pop of color).
