Off to a Blogger Conference

I’m ecstatic! I’m going to my first ever blogger conference and I can’t wait! I’m a style blogger with a vegan twist and I recently started a vegan blog as well so Vida Vegan Con is the perfect venue for me! It’s this weekend in Portland.

Scarf: Gifted
Jeans: Goodwill
Tank: Old Navy
Pleather boots: MIA
Tote: NARN

I’ll be joining 400 like-minded bloggers for a series of workshops, talks, lectures and presentations, with plenty of time to network, eat, and party. There are a couple of receptions, a silent auction and gala, all-you-can-eat vegan brunches, and at least one vegan ice cream bar. So yeah, it’s like Christmas!

green and black

I have my business cards ready, my tote bag for all the swag I’m going to pick up, and in idea of the sessions I’d like to attend. I rented a room in a woman’s home through airbnb, so I’ll let you know how that goes. I figure I’d skip the expense of a hotel because I won’t be doing much sleeping anyway.

the future is vegan

Now that my other blog, Sunshine and Slaughter, has been up and running for a couple of months, I thought this post would be a good time to introduce it. I’d love to know what you think (whether you’re vegan or not). I keep this blog light and fun and I use the other one for writing about animal issues, health, vegan restaurants and products, and updating people on things I’m working on.

See you on the other side (of the conference)!

Sandal Weather

It’s not really sandal weather but when it’s not freezing I’ll wear open-toed shoes–and even sandals–in the hope of getting spring to hurry up.

It’s still a seasonal transition time though. Sometimes cool, occasionally warm. Lots of rain, and a bit of sun. So I like the idea of layering and being prepared for whatever comes my way.

And this is the first time I’m joining The Sapphire Bee and My thrifty Chic for their weekly Anything and Everything blog Hop. I’m looking forward to participating weekly. A mixed bag of this and that is the MO of Jean of all Trades!

What items do you wear that signal the start of spring?

Denim on Denim

It’s true that too much denim can be overwhelming. If I wear a chambray shirt, I pair it with something other than jeans, for example. But if you can break up the sea of denim by mixing shades, you’re good to go.denim times two

I wore my white jeans today an threw on a denim jacket. I didn’t feel like I was wearing a Canadian tuxedo though because the colors were varied.

I’m not a huge fan of rules (I am wearing white after Labor Day and before Memorial Day) but I don’t like the look of one shade of denim head to toe. If you wear all denim, be sure to have a good color contrast between the pieces.

blue and white

Sometimes it’s hard to find shoes that work with white pants. Depending on the outfit, caramel looks  nice and the contrast isn’t stark. For today’s casual look, I opted for blue velvet lace-up oxfords.

Do you follow (or break any fashion rules)?

I’ve joined Visible Monday at Not Dead Yet today. Check out what everyone else is wearing!

Last of the Fall Foliage

Winter officially arrives on December 21st, and thought it might feel like winter already in some parts, I’m still savoring fall. I love fall colors but I don’t like the reminder that the cold, wet winter lies ahead.

This is, to me, a quintessential fall look: knee-high boots, earth tones, and a jacket and scarf.

Jacket: Bedo
Jeans: Old Navy via swapped
Scarf: Swapped
Boots: Mia

I bought this jacket on sale last spring and had to put it away for summer. I haven’t had the chance to wear it until now, but buying last year’s merchandise at the end of season saved me a bundle. Besides, I’ve seen leather-sleeved jackets in the stores recently so it’s hardly out of style. These sleeves are faux leather, making the piece affordable–and vegan!

I thought black boots might make this look a bit like a uniform so I wore caramel-colored boots and brought in more warm tones in the scarf. I’m looking forward to wearing this with skirts and dress pants, and of course with jeans, like I’ve done here.

What fall/winter pieces are you looking forward to wearing until the weather warms up?

Summer Rain: Shorts and Boots

What do I do when it rains in Summer? Well, a few weeks ago, I ran errands in boots and denim shorts.

shorts and boots

Top: Old Navy
Scarf: Swapped
Shorts: Calvin Klein (from Marshall’s)
Purse: JC Penney
Bracelet: The Fashion truck
Boots: Qupid

I think this outfit works because I layered on a scarf and bought the shorts a couple of sizes bigger than normal. I wanted boho-chic, not Daisy Duke.

multicolored look

I mixed colors in a seemingly haphazard way too. Nothing too contrived. Just a casual day. And I got to show off the orange and brass wrap bracelet I got at the Fashion truck in Boston.

Dress Up, Dress Down: Skinny Jeans and Purple Scarf

Seattle is a casual city, more known for fleece and hiking boots than satin and stilettos. I don’t find most fleece jackets very stylish, though. So when I found this black fleece jacket that looked more moto than mountain, I bought it. It’s my first fleece jacket and I have to admit: Fleece is warm!

Jacket: Old Navy
Scarf: Gifted
Jeans: Ernest Sewn
Boots: Wanted

I wore the fleece with skinny jeans and flat boots so I could comfortably walk my dog. Perfect for a cool, spring morning. The scarf added a pop of color. It’s from my aunt. She sent it to me in a care package–all the way from Germany!

Later, I wanted to grab a bite with hubby and thought I needed to dress up just a bit. So I swapped the fleece for a military-style jacket and the boots for stacked heels.

Jacket: H&M
Shoes: Seychelles

Everything else about the outfit stayed the same. The little changes really changed the look of the outfit. Do you have any tricks for changing the look of an outfit?

Le Scarf Parisian

My friend Shannon went to Paris for Christmas and brought me back this amazing scarf! I love it. It’s so long and soft. It’s a wonderful ruched style with a subtle monochromatic rose pattern woven through it.

I love scarves and I wear them a lot. I’ve always thought they add a European vibe to an outfit. And since this is from France, it really is European! Trés chic! It’s got a really neat structural quality to it. I can twist it in fun ways and it holds its shape well. It looks great with my gray pea coat and it’s going to match my red raincoat nicely.

My New Pink Cowl

Remember a few weeks ago (or was it longer?) when I went to the Etsy Rain craft show? Everything I bought that day was green, with the exception of this pink cowl. I initially wanted a green one (of course) but when I tried on this one, Rosalind, the owner of Scarf City, said the color suited me.

pink cowl

She had only wool at the show so I ordered a non-wool one (wool makes me terribly itchy). It arrived in the mail a week later. I love it. It’s so soft and it has a great shape. I bet I could even pull it over my head if it gets cold. I think that would make it a snood (a scarf/hood hybrid–no really, it is a real thing; I’m not making this up!)

And of course I wore the cowl with green. What can I say? I love green!

Have a look at Scarf City and see what other neat things Rosalind makes. I liked her hats and arm warmers too–they come in a variety of colors. I promise not to buy green ones.

Robin’s Egg Blue with Brown

Robin’s egg blue is so cheery. It reminds me of, well, the tiny robin’s eggs I’ve seen in little robin’s nests. Today I wore this hue with chocolate brown.

brown and blue

The pattern of this dress reminds me of Missoni. The colors limit me to bluish-greens and neutrals, but I’ve remixed it quite a bit. Cream tights and tan boots; teal tights and a cream scarf; brown tights and a blue scarf, like I did today.

Fall Color Theme

I love orange. Actually, orange and navy is my favorite color combo. Today, I wore orange with black, but I added olive green to keep with the season without screaming “Halloween.”

I can’t get enough of the beautiful leaves this time of year. They change color and drop so quickly so I have to appreciate the hues while I can. I am constantly amazed by the golds and reds and the interesting ombre transitions on the trees. I love fall! What do you like about autumn? What’s your favorite season?
