Layered Black Maxi Dress

It’s Throwback Thursday so I thought I’d share this set of pictures from an outfit post I prepared a few months ago and never posted. The weather got nice and I looked out of season. Well, the weather’s cooled off and this is a look I’ll reproduce for fall.

Dress: Lulu’s
Cardigan: Sample sale
Faux leather belt: Ross Dress for Less
Boots: Fluevog
Necklace: Vendor on eBay
Watch: Timex
Bracelets: Gifted

I recently sold these suede Fluevog boots–and with the money I made, I bought a pair of faux leather booties by Cri de Coeur. Even Steven. And aligned to my animal-free clothing pledge!

black maxi

I’ve worn this maxi before, but then I forgot about it. So I’m making a point to get it back in rotation. There are so many ways to wear a black dress. Just last week I wore a sweater over it so it looked like a skirt.

matching accessories

My belt has a brass-tone buckle so I took the opportunity to wear my brass dragonfly necklace and brass-tone watch. And of course I got a small arm party going by adding the bracelets my brother bought for me. Aw, how sweet!

Interview with Jacquie Bird of SilkWire Jewelry

On my very first day in New York, I serendipitously met Jacquie Bird, the owner/creator of SilkWire Jewelry. Jacquie is a radiant woman who will draw you in with her smile. I brought my parents over to the booth she was running at a flea market in Harlem, just around the corner from where we were staying.

Jean, Jacquie and Carmen

I bought a ring from Jacquie that day (it’s been on this blog once already) and wanted to learn more about her and her business. She accepted my request for an interview, and here it is:

How did you get started as a jewelry designer?

It actually flowed out of an idea I had for hair accessories for locs. Didn’t have the energy or push to see it through at the time so I ditched that idea but had all this inventory. What to do with it? In a few days an idea was fully realized in my head, I just had to figure out how to do it, what was my voice? I had always worked with my hands from childhood and have worked jewelry in periods throughout my life but along the way in looking for my next passion, (I had a career as a dancer-singer-actress who worked on Broadway and the stage with a few trysts on TV and film in my first life) I was taken aback when I found it was creating JewelryArt.

ring

What are the biggest challenges of working in such a creative field?

There are ten baZILLION jewelry creator/designers out there—how do I get folks to pay attention to what I do, to hear what I have to say through my JewelryArt? When your stuff is a bit off kilter, it is a huge challenge to hold your ground in the field; when your prices are a bit higher because you are firm in what it is you do and offer, staying true to self comes into question a LOT. There is a spiritual aspect to what I create, it isn’t just about jewelry. Gemstones, Crystals and Copper have power and amazing properties, I write about this in A Bird Blogs About Gems using my own experiences and that of others, along with research. Some folks get it, some do not—they just wanna rock the jewelry and that’s ok too. But I know what I’m about and why I do it.

And the biggest challenge? To be patient and to keep the faith that I will find my audience and they will find me. When I can laugh about this part of the journey I think, “well Bird, you danced, sang, and acted for a living, getting discovered as a Jewelry Artist should be a piece of cake just chill, keep on pushin’ and keep your chin up!”

earrings

All your pieces are one-of-a-kind, but is there a certain style or stone that’s popular with your customers?

People dig the rings and the stones they are familiar with like Amethyst, clear Quartz, Moonstone, Rose Quartz and some not quite so familiar stones like Chalcopyrite (because of the rainbow colors and shine), Rhodochrosite, and Pink Tourmaline. Oh, almost forgot Amazonite which is what you have. The Stone of Harmony 🙂

I do value harmony! Can you tell me a bit about the jemstones you use and how they affect wearers?

Some who are aware notice the subtleties; I had one woman tell me she noticed the Moonstone ring she had amplified her moods. One of the properties is that it can amplify moods both positive and negative. But the negative comes out with the intention to show you where you can change it and not act recklessly when you are not your best self. She realized this and when she was feeling crusty and ready to lash out, she would check herself.

A man told me he noticed he was more hyper when he didn’t wear his Rose Quartz and Lepidolite Neckpiece. Now this was someone who was not at all interested when I tried to tell him about the properties of the stones so I stopped in mid-sentence. After about a month of owning the piece he told me his discovery that the stones calmed him down. Lepidolite has Lithium in it and both stones have calming and soothing properties.

necklace

When I visited your booth I had a hard time deciding on a ring. You told me to go with the one that first caught my eye. I did and it was a good decision. Do you make decisions based on what initially attracts you to something?

Tee hee I LOVE to hear that! And yes, I do ultimately remind myself to go with my first instinct whenever I find myself in the deluge of “what to buy, which one oh my oh my OH MY????!!!!!” When I don’t do that, I always end up asking, “now why didn’t you listen, you know better??!!” Lolol!

What do you have planned next? Anything you’d like to share with readers?

I am planning to get my jewelry on someone like Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, India Aire, Esperanza Spaulding, Drew Barrymore, et. al.  And also on TV shows and film—the gemstones would really sing on a show like American Horror Story, Coven. So if there’s anybody out there that can help me do that, contact me please! 🙂

In all seriousness, one of my missions is to let folks know there are many natural ways to healing, peace, energy and balance; that working with gemstones, crystals and copper are gifts of Mother Nature that have power and can assist us greatly. They are made up of the same things we are and they took millions of years to cook. We place value on the foods we eat but lump these beauties into “oh they’re just rocks! Oh it’s just copper and it tarnishes!”

My copper JewelryArt is easily cleaned by dropping it in lemon juice or vinegar. And our body needs copper, which it doesn’t produce therefore we must get it from our diets and wearing it also helps. And “rocks” are energy which vibrate on frequencies. Just like everything else in our Universe. It’s ALL energy and vibes.

Thank you, Jacquie!

Taking the High Line

One of the places I wanted to visit during my stay in New York City was the High Line, a 1-mile long, elevated park on a former railway line. The High Line starts at 14th Street in Manhattan’s west side, and extends to 30th Street.

High Line

The original rail line was at street level in the 1800s, but there were so many collisions that 10th Avenue was nicknamed Death Avenue. Eventually, for the safety of New Yorkers, the rail line was elevated. But as a line that brought livestock into the city to be slaughtered, it really still was Death Avenue. I’m glad it’s a park now.

The original rail lines are still in place and beautiful plants grow around them in a way that makes it seem overgrown. In reality, it’s a carefully planned and elegantly cultivated garden.

Highline Collage

My parents and I started at the south end and walked the length of the High Line, enjoying sculptures, gorgeous views, live music, and lush greenery. It’s such an oasis in the city and a tremendous boost to the community. It’s even safe at night! There were so many people wandering through the park on our first visit there, that I felt totally safe.

During the day, you can see across the Hudson to New Jersey.

New Jersey

You can practically see in people’s apartments too! I like the mix of old and new along the High Line. You can see a famous Frank Gehry building, and the infamous Standard Hotel (there weren’t any exhibitionists on this day, however).

Diane von Furstenburg was a major financial backer for the project and it’s fitting that her flagship store is right next to the park.

DVF

DVF and Empire State Building

No matter where you look, you’ll see terrific views, like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building!

Chrysler Building

When we were done, we descended the staircase and continued exploring New York City. My mom wrote about our visit too. Have you been to the High Line?

New Dress for a Special Occasion

When I was in New York, I met Lois Eastlund, a wonderful designer, at a pop-up shop. I bought two of her dresses. The first, a mint green scooter dress, I shared with you already, but I was saving the other one for a special occasion.

Dress: Lois Eastlund
Tights: Betsey Johnson
Pleather boots: Kelly & Katie (via DSW)
Cuff: Rogue City Killers
Bag: Alchemy Goods

I thought the recent vegan wine and cheese tasting I attended would be a great chance to debut the second dress.

blue and black shift

I love the zigzag color-blocking (the back, which I neglected to capture, is a straight seam) and the colors of this dress. I’ll be able to wear it with plain tights, bare legs and heels, or with sandals.

two blue dresses

It’s tights season so I went with a patterned pair. At the party, someone noted that the pattern on my tights is zigzagged too. I think it works, even though I wasn’t trying to be that coordinated.

Or maybe I was! I wore a recycled rubber cuff and I carried a recycled rubber purse.

Flirty Red Jacket

I featured this jacket close to a year ago when I wore it to a Thanksgiving dinner. Here it is, this time with a dress.

red blazer

Jacket: Lulu’s
Dress: Swapped
Tank: Target
Necklace: Gifted
Ring: Street fair in Florida
Boots: Borrowed

I bought this jacket with credit I had from a return at Lulu’s. I’d ordered a pair of pumps from them and the heel broke on my very first wear! I was so bummed, but Lulu’s righted the wrong, no questions asked. What great customer service!

I thought the red was a nice way to add color to my monochromatic outfit. Plus, it’s cooler now and I welcome long sleeves. My dress is a nice, striped knit. It’s a bit warm for summer but it has short sleeves and is chilly in winter. Maybe that’s why it ended up at a clothing exchange.

black knitted dress

I’ll be looking for more ways to wear my red jacket over the winter. It’s versatile. It would look good with jeans, a mini, or just about anything.

Stripes, Florals, and Orange Pants

I wear these orange pants a lot, but they’re surprisingly versatile, and I always seems to find new ways to style them.

orange pants

So for now, they’re staying in rotation.

stripes and floral

Top: Marshall’s
Pants: Dickies
Shoes: Kimchi
Scarf: Swapped

This time, I wore them with a striped top and floral scarf. Scarves, I find, are a subtle way of pattern mixing and incorporating extra color into an outfit. My scarf has orange in it so it’s still a coordinated look. And aren’t stripes practically a neutral?

floral scarf and striped top

And since I was going with the orange and navy theme (possibly my favorite color combo), I thought I’d throw on some blue velvet shoes! Sometimes faux leather is boring and I love incorporating other textures into my footwear, like satin, embroidery, embellishments, and now velvet!

velvet shoes

These pants were originally boot cut but I felt like they weren’t long enough for that style so I tapered the leg and turned them into skinnies. They aren’t real peg legs, but they’re definitely not boot cut anymore. It’s actually a simple alteration–and you can use an existing pair of slim cut pants as your guide!

The Lure of Horror Film

October is a spooky month–perfect for a visit to the scary exhibit at Seattle’s EMP museum: The Lure of Horror Film.

Can't look away

Truth be told, I’d rather laugh than be scared, but I was intrigued by the exhibit. And despite not being a die-hard horror fan, I’d seen a lot of the movies featured in the exhibit, which made it extra fun to see the props used in the film.

spooky selfie

The exhibit was curated by three horror film directors: Roger Corman, John Landis, and Eli Roth. They’ve put together a terrific collection, including a scream booth, movie artifacts, a shadow monster installation and horror soundscapes. Examples like:

The axe from The Shining:

A stick man from The Blair Witch Project:

The alien creature suit from Alien:

Props from The Fly:

Jason’s hockey mask and machete from Friday the 13th:

And a zombie suit from Michael Jackson’s Thriller:

One of the scarier things I found in the museum was not intentional. I took a few pictures in the reflective ceiling in the EMPs expansive atrium. The combination of curved metal and screws turned us into monsters of sorts.

Are you going to see the show? What do you have to be scared of?

Window Shopping in Snohomish

Snohomish, to me, seems like quintessential small-town America, with its picturesque views, mom and pop shops, and quaint diners. I recently took a Sunday drive to Snohomish with Mr. Jean of all trades so we could window shop.

Shirt: Bébénoir
Shorts: Calvin Klein
Boots: MIA
Bag: Matt & Nat
Necklace: Elma Blint
Ring: Silk Wire Jewelry
Cuff: Lauren Harkness

I’m still on my boots and shorts kick, so I paired my new white shirt from Bébénoir in NYC with my faded denim shorts and caramel boots. My shirt works for both big city looks and small town outfits.

neutrals and denim

Today, my jewelry is all so special. I got the cuff at a craft fair in Seattle, my ring at a flea market in Harlem, and my necklace from another flea market in Brooklyn. All three pieces are one-of-a-kind handcrafted pieces by local artisans.

I liked getting design ideas from the beautiful window displays. Seems like an eclectic shabby chic look dominated the designs this season.romantic

I found a clothing store called the Natural Clothing Company and found a couple of cute, sustainable dresses (blogged about one here). And we stumbled across a pub that served Schӧfferhofer, just like I had at the Harlem Tavern. Hubby and I each had a glass to remind me of my fun trip to NYC.

Summer Dress in Autumn

I bought this chambray dress last winter when hubby and I were in Honolulu, Hawaii. In the tropics, all I did was slip into a pair of sandals and I was ready to go. There are only a few days in Seattle when I can do that (even on hot days, evenings are cool). I wanted to get lots of use out of this piece so I planned to style it a lot of ways.

Dress: Roberta Oaks
Cardigan: Old Navy
Tights: Target
Shoes: Aerosoles
Belt: Ross Dress for Less
Purse: Forever 21

A cardigan (I call this one my Mr. Rogers sweater) over the dress adds warmth, as do the tights. For fun (and because I like breaking rules), I added purple shoes. Who says purple and red don’t go together? These shoes are a similar hue to the tights and they blend a bit.

red sweater

I plan to wear this in a few other ways too. Over skinny jeans, with knee-high boots, hmm. I’ll probably think of a few more ideas. Do you have any?

I’ve joined Monday Bloom today so be sure so check out what everyone else is wearing.

Art, Albums and Vintage Clothing

A couple of weeks ago–I can’t believe it’s been that long–I had two invitations for the same evening: One for an art show and the other for a store opening. Never one to miss out, I went to both. First hubby and I went to eat at an Indian restaurant in Issaquah, a quaint town just east of Seattle. I dressed for dinner, the art show, and the grand opening. orange and caramel

Fox Sweater: Old Navy
Skirt: Forever 21
Boots: MIA
Cuff: Rogue City Killers
Bag: Snap Designs

After dinner, we headed over to ArtEAST, an art gallery that also offers art classes. I’ve taken a couple of classes there and really had fun! On this occasion I saw a whole new batch of paintings, sculptures, and photos.

I enjoyed a lot of the works, along with a glass of wine, and then we had to leave.

The next stop was Seattle’s Phinney Ridge neighborhood, where Beats and Bohos was having a party. My friend and fellow blogger Citizen Rosebud sells vintage apparel on consignment from this shop and it was great to see her. Our mutual friend, stylist and blogger Catie Beatty was also there and we chatted and sipped on bevvies while we perused the displays.

Last stop of the evening was a nightcap at a well-known Seattle institution: Carmelita’s. This vegetarian restaurant is closing because its owners are retiring. I’m going to miss it so I said good-bye with a glass of sangria.

I’ve linked up with Lena B Actually, Rachel the Hat, and The Life of the Party. Have a look at what everyone else is wearing!
