Loose, Chunky Knit Top and Cropped Pants

I love the color of this sweater and I love how chunky and cozy it is. The knit is loose and the neckline is a bit, well, gigantic so I have to wear a tank top underneath. I try hard not to look too Flashdance-y when I wear it. But I love it and I keep wearing it.

Necklace: Forever 21
Socks: Hot Sox

Clutch: Thrifted

Today I wore it with my thrifted Eileen Fisher pants. The ones I ruched at the ankle. I wore open-toed shoes and socks again. I love this trend and can’t stop wearing it! To make the look seem intentional, I wore butterfly socks. Yes, I meant to do that!

Green and Gold Winter Look

I’ve worn this gold skirt in the summer but wasn’t sure I could make it work for cooler temperatures. I think I did. Bonus: Other than the skirt and cuff, everything in the outfit was either swapped, thrifted, or a gift.

Top: Swapped
Skirt: Boutique in Portland
Necklace: Gift from mom
Cuff: Lauren Harkness
Purse: Nine West via Thrifted
Shoes: Fry via swapped

I really like this animal print necklace from my mom. It’s made of fimo clay and is on a stretchy elastic so I don’t have to worry about a clasp. It goes well with my other accessories.

accesssories

The necklace is part of a Birthday care package my parents sent me. In addition to cash (always fits, always in style), they sent me a purse, t-shirt, and, of course, the necklace. The bracelets are from my brother, Jonathan. Thanks bro!

Seattle Art Walk

First Thursdays are synonymous with art in Seattle’s Pioneer Square neighborhood. My friend, Autumn, invited me to join her and her friend, Amy, this past Thursday. It was cold so we went straight to the Tashiro Kaplan artist lofts. The entire triangular-shaped block is devoted to artists’ spaces and the lower levels are galleries. We got to stay inside and visit dozens of galleries. When the weather is nicer (for two weeks in July) walking around outside is fun. A lot of artists set up booths in Occidental square.

We saw a wonderful installation that filled an entire room.

cranes

Cut paper was the medium for this intricate piece.

cut paper

This installation caught my eye because artist Ellen Hochberg used women’s garments as her canvas. The leaf motif represents the female form. Here, we see the form on garments that span a woman’s life–from infancy and childhood to womanhood. Check out her website for other amazing work in ink and oil.

We used out smartphones to learn about encaustic. These two pieces showing skeletons of a leaf and bird were ethereal. The layered way technique created an otherworld-ness to these pieces.

They say smoking kills, and these paintings, show the subject smoking during a gruesome and violent situation (granted, the cigarettes are hard to see at this scale). I don’t know if that’s the message intended by the artist, but we noticed the cigarette theme and decided to take our pictures next to various paintings in this series. I was trying to juxtapose joy and pain (hence my silly smile). Autumn was far more stoic, and Amy was pretending not to look.

The Seattle Freeze was the theme of this installation. I met artist Troy Gua and chatting with him for a moment about the “cool distance” people who move to seattle encounter when meeting people here. But like the protective exterior of the duct-taped teddy bears, under all that toughness is a soft, cuddly toy. So too, perhaps, are Seattleites.

Troy Gua and bears

Autumn and I said goodbye to Amy and then we wandered to Occidental Square, where we found more yarn bombing! This is the same set of work that I wrote about a couple of months ago. This time, I found out who the artist is: Suzanne Tidwell created it.

No art trip is complete without a drink so we popped in at Merchant’s Café, Seattle’s oldest restaurant. It’s hard to imagine that in 1890, it was full of men on their way to the gold rush. The bar is gorgeous, carved wood and stained glass ceiling lamps illuminate the room. It’s a real piece of history.

merchant's

Other neighborhoods have art walks throughout the month too: West Seattle, Fremont, Capitol Hill, Belltown, Georgetown, to name a few. For artists like Amy, Autumn, and me, art walks are inspiring. They’re also a great way to get out, socialize, and support the local arts community. Before you buy a mass-produced reproduction at a department store, consider an original piece from a local artist. Many are very affordable and there are so many mediums to choose from: paintings, lithographs, photographs, sculptures, and more.

Have you been to an art walk recently? Do you buy art? Make it?

Le Scarf Parisian

My friend Shannon went to Paris for Christmas and brought me back this amazing scarf! I love it. It’s so long and soft. It’s a wonderful ruched style with a subtle monochromatic rose pattern woven through it.

I love scarves and I wear them a lot. I’ve always thought they add a European vibe to an outfit. And since this is from France, it really is European! Trés chic! It’s got a really neat structural quality to it. I can twist it in fun ways and it holds its shape well. It looks great with my gray pea coat and it’s going to match my red raincoat nicely.

Thrifty Thursday: Andrea’s Closet

This is part two of Shopping her Closet. The first post about my friend Andrea was over a month ago. Have a look at it for style ideas and thrifty tips. Andrea is looking at the clothes she already has and is creating neat new remixes. She’s inspired me to do the same.

Picking up where we left off, here’s Andrea in a great monochromatic look with a cute hat. She knows what works for her.

Hat, top, jeans, and scarf: Ross Dress for Less
MIA boots: DSW
Necklace: Chico’s

Check out her fantastic boots! I love the button detailing.

In this next look, Andrea returns to a black, white, and red color palette. I love how bold–yet classic–it is. The yellow bag is really unexpected too.

Scarf, top, BCBG shoes, and bag: Ross Dress for Less
Pants: Nordstrom Rack
Coat: Mexx (Canada)
Jewelry: Fred Meyer

Seattle weather can quickly turn cold and rainy–and get nice just as fast. That’s why I love how that outfit looks great with or without the jacket. In Washington, outerwear is definitely part of our everyday wear, so why not think of it as part of the outfit?

Case in point: Andrea’s red coat. It’s adorable. This might be my favorite look. It’s coordinated but not too matchy. The neutrals of the hat and boots are different but they work together really well.

Hat: Gifted
Top, jacket, and jeans: Ross Dress for Less
Earrings: Fred Meyer
Mia boots: DSW
Coat: Macy’s

This is a hot, retro look. Andrea looks sophisticated in these elegant colors. The faux fur detailing glams up the outfit. Remove the coat, and she’s ready for work. Put it back on and she can to dinner and a show. I love the versatility of this.

The photo shoot with Andrea was a lot of fun and I learned new ways to remix clothes and get a bargain. I hope you got some ideas too. Maybe we’ll see Andrea in her own blog soon!

Snakeskin Dress

I’ve got a real animal-print theme going on lately. I do love wild patterns like zebra, leopard, and tiger. Until recently, I didn’t have any snakeskin patterned clothing. Until, that is, I found this little number at H&M. I wore it to the Burlesque Nutcracker but in the post about that event, I barely mentioned my outfit.

I love the pattern, and the price was great ($19). It’s really low cut so I added a cotton cami under it. The ruching is flattering. I recommend a ruched dress. The front doesn’t lie flat so I could eat dinner and not worry. And the back is gathered in a way that makes me look curvy. Genius!

Dress: H&M
Cami: Papaya
Clutch: Crystalyn Kae
Tights: Kushyfoot
Earrings: Premier Designs
Shoes: Badgley Mischka

I wore gray tights and my gray Badgley Mischka shoes. And of course I carried my Crystalyn Kae clutch. I’ve been carrying this around with me almost every day since I got it. It’s really versatile and great for day and evening. Best of all, it’s glazed fabric. A great vegan alternative to leather (and just as durable).

My New Pink Cowl

Remember a few weeks ago (or was it longer?) when I went to the Etsy Rain craft show? Everything I bought that day was green, with the exception of this pink cowl. I initially wanted a green one (of course) but when I tried on this one, Rosalind, the owner of Scarf City, said the color suited me.

pink cowl

She had only wool at the show so I ordered a non-wool one (wool makes me terribly itchy). It arrived in the mail a week later. I love it. It’s so soft and it has a great shape. I bet I could even pull it over my head if it gets cold. I think that would make it a snood (a scarf/hood hybrid–no really, it is a real thing; I’m not making this up!)

And of course I wore the cowl with green. What can I say? I love green!

Have a look at Scarf City and see what other neat things Rosalind makes. I liked her hats and arm warmers too–they come in a variety of colors. I promise not to buy green ones.

And the New Year Sparkled

space needle

I spent the last few hours of 2011 laughing hysterically with my friend, Autumn, drinking fine wine with my other friend, Laura, and sharing snacks with my husband. Laura invited about ten of us over to her condo near the Space Needle so we could watch the fireworks and ring in 2012.

The upcoming Bloggers do it Better challenge is sequins, so I carried my sequined purse. I added even more shine with a metallic-threaded tank top and satin blazer. A vintage slip-as-skirt rounded out the look.

Laura’s place is hip and modern. I snapped a shot of her illuminated plants and the DIY indoor smores setup.

New Year’s Challenge

Oh boy. I had a wardrobe malfunction last week. No, I didn’t flash anyone, tuck my skirt into my underwear, or walk around with toilet paper stuck to my shoe. I did all my laundry and put away all my clothes and my closet shelf came crashing down.

I took that as a sign. Initially, I thought it meant I should move to place with a walk-in closet. I have a lot of clothes. But as I started picking up my stuff, I saw a lot of things I’d worn only once. There was a surprising amount of things I’d never worn–some with price tags still on them.

never worn

These clothes have never been worn

I talk about remixing but the truth is I like to shop. If I never wear the things I have, I can’t justify buying more. I’m not a Hollywood star who can’t be seen in the same thing twice. Plus, I have a budget!

So starting today, I’m not going to buy anything until I wear all the things I’ve never worn, wear the things I’ve worn once at least one more time, and purged my closet of the ill-fitting, unloved, worn-out pieces that have buried things I should be wearing more often.

worn once

I've worn these only once (I've never worn the cat; she just likes the pile of clothes)

It’s going to be hard. The first step is to turn off the daily subscription emails I get from My Habit, Daily Candy, Ideeli, Shop It to Me, and Gilt. Don’t get me wrong, I love the wonderful deals I get on those sites, but until I reign things in a bit, there’s no need to add to the problem.

Last spring one of my guest bloggers wrote about her challenge with utilizing her wardrobe. Her post came to mind when I stared down the pile of clothes on my floor.

What are your New Year’s resolutions or challenges?

Introducing Sockadilly

Part of my role as Jean of all Trades is to dabble in lots of things. I write, paint and blog. I’ve been a roller girl and a sport bike rider. I’ve worked as a dog walker, retail manager, and ESL teacher.

Over Thanksgiving, I decided to open an online sock shop. as you can see from many of my style posts, I like colorful tights and fun socks. They’re an inexpensive way to change the look of an outfit. My goal was to source a few suppliers, get a bit of inventory, buy a business license, build a website, and open shop. I gave myself until 2012 to get it all done.

I’m happy to say, I’m ready! Sockadilly.com is open for business. Update: I had fun with my ecommerce adventure but I realize what a lot of work it is. I shut down the site in Summer 2012 but will continue to blog and show you lots of fun sock styles.

cat and socksIn a way, I feel like I’ve come full circle. In high school I worked part-time as a retail sales associate in a hosiery shop. We sold socks, tights, pantyhose and stockings. We also carried swimsuits and exercise wear. I enjoyed that job and my first foray into the business of fashion.

Fast forward to the 21st Century and I have a new avenue for selling merchandise: the web. I’d never dreamed of such a thing back in the 80s. We had no email, web address, Twitter or Facebook accounts–not even a cell phone. Yet the store did well. So let’s see what I can make of my virtual shop.

I’m still adding inventory and I’d love to hear your ideas about what you’d like to see in the store.
