Street Style: Vegan Blogger Conference

I had a lot of fun at Vida Vegan Con, the vegan blogger conference I attended last week. Most bloggers had food blogs, some had lifestyle blogs, and a few had style blogs. Everywhere I turned I saw fashionable bloggers! It was hard to get photos though–we were all so busy. I managed to get a few shots at least.

I stopped Ky Lee Fournier because I loved her casual style. I’m a huge fan of fedoras and skinny jeans and I like how she threw a denim jacket into the mix. The faux leather booties add a bit of toughness and the cotton floral bag is a great soft spring piece. Ky Lee is a vegan sports nutritionist from British Columbia and she’s as fit as she is stylish!

Ky Lee Fournier

When Londoner Kip told her friends she’s had her photo taken for a style blog, they laughed. Kip runs The Messy Vegetarian Cook blog and is known for her recipes, not her outfits. But who’s laughing now? From the red tights and adorable polka-dots to the cute cardi, this is a great look. I think I need a pair of 8-hole vegan Dr. Martens now too!

Kip

I was thrilled to meet Jesse Anne O in person. I’ve been reading her blog for a couple of years and was thrilled when I found out she was going to VVC. She runs a smashing style blog with a focus on ethical attire. I love following her New York adventures and seeing what she’s thrifted. She’s also got her pulse on vegan designers and local shops.

Jesse Anne O

As proof that we met, here I am with Jesse.

Jean and Jesse

I saw a few people donning stripes over the three-day conference. Case in point: Anika of Vegan Score and Dawn of Vegan Moxie. I know these two lovelies from Seattle and it was great to reconnect with them in Portland.

I love Anika’s black, white and red look. She shows how to “dress down” with a denim jacket. And you’d never know it, but those cute ballet flats are Crocs! Waterproof shoes for temperamental spring days–genius! Dawns tights and cardi are a great way to wear a summery dress when it’s a bit cool out. I love how she chose green tights and caramel faux-leather flats. Adorable!

Anika and dawn

Helen and Molly are also from Seattle. They are the voices behind Vegtastic and Vegan Princess in an Omni Kingdom, respectively. I paired them up for my impromptu shoot because they both had on dots. Helen’s top has a subtle Swiss dot and Molly’s dress is a whimsical circle print. I like how they show how to layer with cardigans and how to rock flats. I think Helen might be wearing Cri de Coeur (and Jesse, above, might have on the same style. Great minds…).

Dawn and Molly

Speaking of great minds, meet Megan and Megan. Megan on the left, runs The Opinioness of the World, an awesome blog filled with info about film, food, and feminism (among other things). I almost bought the very scarf she’s wearing but I left it at Herbivore Clothing. Moments later, unbeknownst to me, Megan popped in and got it. Good call! It looks great and it’s super soft.

Both Megans got their shirts at Herbivore, which is why I thought they looked so good together in this post. It’s a black and fuchsia theme! The shirts read “Love life: no matter whose.” A terrific message! I like how these women took the same shirt and created completely different outfits. Megan on the right is on twitter and YouTube and has tons of adorable cat stories and photos because she fosters kittens. Awesome!

Two Molly's

Finally, it’s me again. But only because I bumped into Lulu. We’d been carrying around the same bag all weekend and had a couple of photo ops together. Lulu looked fantastic all weekend long. I wish I’d gotten pictures of her every day. Her wardrobe is all about color and texture and she makes it seem effortless. She doesn’t have a blog–yet. Here’s hoping to that happening soon. No pressure, Lulu!

Jean and Lulu

There you have it. I did snap a bunch of photos at the vegan gala, so look for that post next!

Sparkly Stripes

Some days I like simple dressing. Today was one such day and this is one such outfit. It’s just a sweater and jeans.

stripes

Sweater: Dress Barn
Pants: Zara
Shoes: Naturalizer via Goodwill
Bracelet: Consignment shop

It’s a bit more special than most “plain” outfits because the sweater has a nice, subtle sparkle to it. Just enough to shine, but not too much for daywear.  And my jeans are glazed denim. They have a look not unlike leather, but much cheaper–and vegan!

sparkles

My mom helped get me this top. She saw a “buy one, get one half off” sale at Dress Barn but wanted only one item. So she brought me along and let me get the discount on whatever I wanted. How nice!

Blue, Gray, and a Cowl-neck Scarf

I found another way to wear my Ivan Grundahl skirt. I got it on sale a few years ago, but even on sale, designer threads aren’t cheap. But my cost per wear is getting lower. I’m glad I bought this piece. I feel like it’s timeless.

blue and gray

Jacket: Swapped
Sweater: Target
Belt: Ross Dress for Less
Watch and cuff: Thrifted
CowlScarf City
Skirt: Ivan Grundahl
Boots: Prada via consignment

Today I paired my skirt with denim, navy, and a pair of thrifted, microfiber Prada boots. In the past, I’ve worn it with fuchsia, green, and even dusty rose.

pink cowl tops it off

I have enjoyed my cowl-neck scarf a lot too. I was so happy when Rosalind, owner of Scarf City, made me a custom non-wool scarf. I find wool terribly itchy and I’m on a quest to not wear animal products of any kind. This cotton scarf did the trick!

Josie Maran Argan Oil and Moisturizer

A few weeks ago, while poking around the shelves at Sephora, I discovered Josie Maran Argan Oil. I’ve been on a quest to find vegan beauty products. I thought I was shopping cruelty-free but I was horrified to discover a few items in my stash are by companies that still test on animals. Shameful!

The woman at Sephora explained that the entire Josie Maran line is vegan and cruelty-free (no animal ingredients and no animal testing). Plus, it’s natural and organic.

Josie Maran

Josie Maran sources argan oil from co-ops that help women in rural Morocco earn a decent living in good labor conditions, while working toward improved literacy. I love that and I’m willing to pay more for a product with those values.

Besides, the oil is great! It’s not greasy and it absorbs quickly. I use it on my face, the dry ends of my hair, my cuticles, and my elbows. I told my friend Karthik about it and she said she uses Josie Maran products too–specifically their tinted moisturizer. So we planned to stop by Sephora and see if I could get some too.

I was surprised to see that there are only five shades. I chose crème. Karthik wears desert. To find a product that we can both wear–with our different skin types and colors–was pretty impressive (Karthik was born in India and has wonderful, warm brown skin. My light skin is a reflection of my German and Scottish roots). We both love that it’s got SPF 30. No more greasy sunscreen on our faces! (And yes, skin cancer and wrinkles affect all skin types, so slather up!)

Karthik’s issue with sunscreens is that most leave a whitish residue on her face. The Josie Maran moisturizer doesn’t. My issue is that even the lightest tinted moisturizer looks orange on my skin and you can see where the product stops and my natural color begins.

This moisturizer is tinted just right. It blends in, it’s lightweight, and left us glowing, not greasy. I’ve even stopped wearing pressed powder. I really only ever used it to hide the shine of sunscreen. I can’t wait to try their cosmetics too. Argan oil mascara? Sign me up!

We also tried products by other cruelty-free companies (Tarte and Stila) and popped into Lush, so come on back for more of our reviews!

Note: This isn’t a sponsored post. I wasn’t compensated to review these products. I just really like them. Also, I cross-posted this on my other blog, Sunshine and Slaughter, because it was relevant.

Dressing for the Show

Last Saturday I went to an eco-fashion themed fashion show. I wanted to dress the part: stylish yet eco-conscious. Here’s the outfit I put together.

all-black

Jacket: Forever 21
Top: Swapped
Pants: Zara
Belt: The Vegan Collection
Shoes: Christian Louboutin
Purse: Crystalyn Kae
Cuff (shown below): Greenbelts

At first glance, it might not seem specifically eco-friendly. It’s not vegetable-dyed bamboo, for example. But I have a few things in mind when I put this together. Here’s my thinking:

The jacket is cotton and faux leather. And while we could debate the sustainability of pleather made overseas, I’m giving myself points for choosing non-leather. By the same token, the jeans are glazed denim, a leather alternative, and so is the clutch. That one I can really get behind. It’s by a local designer, Crystalyn Kae, and is very eco-friendly.

eco outfit

The shoes are leather, but I bought them second hand. Points for recycling! My shirt is swapped, so again, I’ll count that as recycling. The leather cuff was once a belt–upcycled! And the belt is all-vegan and US-made.

shirt and cuff

Regardless of how good a score I got on the eco-front, I tried, and I had a lot of fun in this outfit. I felt a little like Joan Jett!

I’m linking up to What I Wore Wednesday at The Pleated Poppy and Transatlantic Blonde. Be sure to check out what everyone else is wearing!

Meeting Spinner Dolphins in Hawaii

Today was the day I’d been dreaming about for the past month. We’d booked a catamaran tour and were hoping to see dolphins, whales and turtles off the west coast of Oahu. Nothing in nature is guaranteed, so I didn’t know what to expect.

We headed over to the Waianae Boat Harbor as the sun was rising. The west coast is the least touristy (and some would say slightly dangerous). Sure there’s poverty, but I think the dangerous reputation is exaggerated. The rumors might benefit the locals though, who probably don’t want swarms of tourists invading their towns.

highway to Waianae

A rainbow at the harbor was a good sign. There were three couples on board, us included, and three crew members: Captain Tori, a marine biologist, and two grad students who were studying the behavior of the animals we were hoping to see.

rainbow at harbor

I chose Wild Side Hawaii because they focus on conservation and ecologically sound business practices. The tours are small and put the animals first. Like me, they don’t condone captive swim-with-dolphin programs or marine parks that emphasize “entertainment.” Dolphins don’t belong in chlorinated cement tanks. I’ve seen the movie The Cove and I’ve learned that untold numbers of wild dolphins are slaughtered to catch the few that are suitable for captive programs. Families are torn apart and I don’t want to be any part of that.

sunbreak

But on this day, I was thinking of the free dolphins in the waters and wondering whether they’d choose to make an appearance. Even if they didn’t, the views were amazing, and the day was perfect. The clouds were blowing away, I had on my reef-safe sunblock, and I was ready for anything.

ready for anything

on a boat

We got to see a surfing competition from “backstage.” I’ve never seen something like this from the ocean side before!

surf from behind

Captain Tori explained all about the indigenous people who used to live in the valleys on Oahu and how they were agrarian and self-sustaining. Some were fierce warriors too and greatly feared.

Oahu

Then, we saw a humpback whale! Wow! It was amazing to see her come up for air and “wave” to us. Then she disappeared into the water with a splash.

humpback

humpback again

I decided to live in the moment instead of living through my camera lens, so the pictures here are less than stellar. But I have the memories that will stay with me forever.

When the dolphins arrived, I was giddy. We watched them surf our wake and easily keep up with the boat. Spinner dolphins are small compared to the bottlenose dolphins people are familiar with. A male might be 6′ long at the most.

dolphins arrive

dolphin with boat

They still seemed big to me.

dolphins from boat

When the captain gave us the all-clear, we jumped in the water. I’m hope you’re not disappointed that I don’t have stories to tell of me riding dolphins or giving them kisses. These are, after all, wild animals. I was honored to be in their environment. I snorkeled quietly on the surface and watched pods of five to 13 “float” by under me. They seemed to move without even trying and the effortless way they glided through the water was not lost on me, a lousy swimmer.

snorkeling

I’m new to snorkeling and I’m still getting used to the calm, silent otherworld-ness of being underwater. And this was a great place to practice. The water was warm, calm, and clear to the bottom (even though it was probably 40′ deep). I didn’t use any lens filters–it really is that blue!

dolphin flukes

I have to include a farther-away shot so you can see the dolphins aren’t in a blue-painted tank. It is the ocean!

dolphins leaving

I would love to go back and snorkel again. I still have to see a sea turtle! If you want to experience nature and wild, free dolphins and whales, check out Wild Side Hawaii.

pacific

After the tour, we drove to the North Shore, a famed surfing location, and stopped for lunch and for a refreshing fresh fruit smoothie at Kahuku Farms. We continued clockwise around the island until we got back to Kailua. When we got back to our bungalow, we got ready for dinner and found a delicious Greek restaurant nearby.

Our trip was nearing its end. Last stop: A morning at the beach before flying home.

DIY High-Low Skirt

Here’s my new “mullet” skirt–high hem in the front, low in the back.

mullet skirt

Jacket: Swapped
Top: Old Navy
Scarf: Gifted
Skirt: Crossroads Trading Co.
Tights: Roots Canada
Boots: Hunter via consignment
Purse: Crystalyn Kae

I’ve liked this style since I first saw it last spring, but I wasn’t keen on spending a lot of money on something trendy. So when my yellow maxi skirt shrunk unevenly, I took it as a sign to start chopping.

green and yellow

I cut away an inverted U of fabric from the front and left the edge unfinished. I think I’ll tire of the skirt before the jersey knit unravels.

the All-Trades

On this particular afternoon, Mr. Jean of all Trades and I accompanied my parents to an art show at the Seattle Center. It’s always fun having my own personal photographer (AKA Mom or Fashionable over 50) following me! She’s not only my personal paparazza, she’s a great personal shopper. I hesitated when I saw these boots on consignment until she reminded me that in Seattle, stylish rainboots are a must! I love the comfy wedge heel and grape shade.

DIY Grommet Blazer Closures

Ooh! I have an easy-peasy DIY project for you! The first time I wore this jacket, I belted it; last time, I wore it open. The reason? It’s too small. But it was a thrifty find and I couldn’t turn it down.

too small

I was tired of not being able to button this baby up, so I went to the craft store and bought grommets. They’re meant for curtains, so I have 5 more sets for other too-small blazers that I might buy. I positioned the grommets over the button and button hole, cut out the hole, snapped in the grommets, and within ten minutes I had a jacket that fits!

new closures

The grommet kit came with a template so I could draw the perfect circle for the grommet. They’re plastic, metal-look grommets and snapped together without any tools.

grommets and ribbon

I bought olive-green, grosgrain ribbon to tie together the jacket, but I can easily swap it out with another color or texture: black, brown, yellow, silky cord, even chain!

up close grommets

I got compliments on this look when I wore it to work–and best of all, it’s not a hack job. It looks like it was made this way!

my outfit

Blazer: Goodwill
T-shirt: Target
Jeans: Jessica Simpson via swapped
Belt: The Vegan Collection
Boots: Novacas

I’ve got to call out my shoes. They’re part of a mini-spree I went on at The Chocolate Shoebox, a vegan shoe and chocolate shop in Seattle. The brick and mortar store is closing and times are tough so I thought I’d support a local, ethical, small business. The boots will cost me 5 points (according to the Wartime Wardrobe Challenge I’m taking part in), but I don’t mind one bit! I got the belt too, but belts aren’t on the list.

novacas

These are by Novacas, an all-vegan shoe company that focuses on recycled materials, quality construction, and fair labor. They’re made in Portugal, feel like real suede, are comfy as heck, and don’t make my feet sweaty.

taupe microfiber

I’ve wanted a pair of Novacas for a while now and I’m thrilled to have these ones. I also bought a pair of tall boots, a pair of shoes, four pair of socks, and two t-shirts. Add to that the cardigan I bought a few weeks ago and I’m down to 42 points to spend before I have to start donating to charity!

Red Jacket for National Wear Red Day

It’s National Wear Red Day® again. Last year, I wore a red dress, and today I’m representing in a red jacket. This day is meant to raise awareness about the #1 killer of women: Heart disease.

red jacket

Jacket: Lulu’s
T-shirt: Target
Skirt: Swapped
Tights: Target
Boots: Lanvin via consignment
Clutch: Alchemy Goods

I wore this jacket at Vegan Thanksgiving, a strange coincidence–if you know me, you’ll know I like to promote a healthy, plant-based lifestyle. The American Heart Association, who sponsors National Wear Red Day®, urges women to control risk factors for heart disease. Many factors, like blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity can be eliminated with healthy food choices. The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine has a lot of information about how to keep a healthy heart, including:

  • Eating a low-fat, vegetarian diet
  • Brisk walking for a half-hour per day or an hour three times per week
  • Not smoking
  • Managing stress

Back to the outfit! Did you check out the purse? It’s made of recycled bicycle inter tubes–vegan and green! I love supporting local, ethical, sustainable businesses, and Alchemy Goods fits that bill. They’re right here in Seattle. I bought mine at Click! Design That Fits in West Seattle.

red, black, and merle

And the shoes? No I didn’t blow a mortgage payment on them (although new, that’s what they’d cost). I found them on consignment at Ragamoffyn’s–for a fraction of the cost of what they’d be new. Not only did I save major bucks, but I don’t like to buy new leather. If it’s second-hand, I consider it recycling.

Are you wearing red today? What are your heart-healthy tips?

Sheer Sweater and Jeans

I forgot about these photos. This is a sweater I bought a couple of months ago. I jumped on the sheer sweater trend because they’re great for layering and aren’t too hot in milder climates or indoors.

sheer sweater

Sweater: Target
Tank: Old Navy
Jeans: Citizens of Humanity
Shoes: Crossroads Trading
Purse: Matt & Nat
Bracelets: Gifted (thanks Jon!)

I also liked that the color is a brighter version of coral. Not quite neon and deeper than melon. I’ll showcase these boots better soon. They’re a chocolate-brown faux suede that I picked up at Crossroads trading. Second hand, but never worn. Score! And my thoughtful brother, Jonathan, bought me these bracelets. How nice!

sweater and jeans

By swapping out what I wear under it, I can really change the look. The only trouble is that is snags really easily. So I use my handy crochet hook to pull errant threads to the inside of the sweater, where they’re less visible.

hobo bag

This piece should take me well into spring too. Oh, the bag is made of recycled water bottles but to look at it, you’d think it was suede. Pretty neat!

I’ve linked up with Visible Monday at Not Dead Yet today. Check out all the other look-at-me women!
