Asian-Inspired Jacket

I love this jacket! I bought it from an online eBay store. It came all the way from Hong Kong. I love the wide sleeves and red and black color combo. It’s got a faux leather skull appliqué but it also has floral fabric that lines the sleeves and floral detailing on the shoulder. It has balance.

I feel like I can take on the world when I wear this jacket. Today I paired it with my leggings with the faux leather panels and combat-styled boots. I’ve worn this only once before, but that’s going to change. I’ll throw this on more often and not save it for the “right occasion.” Besides, it’s fleece-lined so it’s warm and cosy. Perfect for a Seattle winter (and spring, summer and fall).

Maybe it was the fog we had this morning but I think I could hunt and kill zombies in this jacket. And who knows? They might be out there.

Blazer Day with a Touch of Marigold

This is my go-to look, I’ve decided: Blazer, jeans, and heels.

Blazer: Laundry by Shelli Segal via thrifted
Jeans: Citizens of Humanity
Tank: Papaya
Scarf: DIY
Earrings: Airport kiosk
Shoes: Nine West

Today, I added a DIY t-shirt scarf and I wore open-toed shoes with socks. You might also notice the embellishment at the bottom of the blazer. I did that! The lining was coming undone so I re-hemmed it and while I was at it I did a little freestyle machine sewing. I just turned the jacket this way and that while I sewed until I had a neat pattern.

How do you customize your things? Do you have a signature look?

Black and Gray on a Windy Day

Today I’m in neutrals again. I’m wearing the dove-gray Badgley Mischka shoes I debuted on my jumpsuit post. The shoes weren’t cheap, but they were 5o% off at My Habit, a daily deal, online shopping site. The discount put them in the price range of Nine West or Aldo. If you have an Amazon account, you can sign into My Habit and spend and/or save away!

I can’t believe how windy it was during my shoot. No, I didn’t use a fan. Yes, my camera and tripod almost blew over.

I wish I could remember the name of the skirt designer. I cut out the tag and vowed to remember, but of course, the name slipped my mind.

Celebrating our Fifth Anniversary

On December 24, 2006 my honey and I married on the beach in California. Today, we celebrated five years as husband and wife. We had an amazing lunch at Six Seven, the restaurant at The Edgewater Hotel in Seattle.

After lunch, we took a few photos in front of a sculpture we had commissioned to commemorate this day.

Mr and Mrs White

Just kidding! Imagine Mr. and Mrs. White having their own initial forged in steel? This is part of the University of Washington. Washington, White, whatever. It worked for the shoot.

happy couple

It’s hard to believe that we’ve been married for five years! There were a few moments when I didn’t think we’d make it this far but mostly I’m amazed at how quickly time has flown by. We have so much fun together and we’ve gotten into a groove. Things just work. It’s nice to not have to over-analyze things and talk everything to death. We’re different, but we embrace our differences. We have love and trust, and that goes a long way.

Today, we bummed around Seattle, but five years ago we were getting ready for the big day. We had a small ceremony, with only my parents and younger brother in attendance. We were engaged for close to a year (Terrence proposed on Christmas the year before), but we hadn’t made wedding plans until two weeks before.

We decided to turn a family get-together into a wedding. We were meeting my parents in Long Beach anyway, so why not? With such a short time to plan, we quickly learned to prioritize. Terrence started by asking my dad’s permission. That was the first step in creating a close friendship. Good move, sweetie!

Two handsome guys

We found an officiant to conduct the ceremony, we got a license and rings, and I found a dress.

(As a side note, it’s possible to find a wedding dress that doesn’t cost a fortune. I went to Macy’s and looked through their holiday section. Someone else might have worn this to a New Year’s eve party, but it’s wedding-worthy too. And was 50% off the original $400 price tag.)

the dress

Of course we had to rent a fun car. We drove a Mustang convertible. Compared to the cold, wet, Seattle weather, California in winter is a top-down kind of place. But the locals thought we were crazy for driving around without the roof in 65-degree weather.

Halfway through our short trip to the beach, Terrence made a sudden U-turn. Cold feet? Change of heart? I was a bit nervous. Turns out, he’d seen a roadside flower stand and turned back to buy me a bouquet. How sweet is that?

happy couple

After a short-and-sweet ceremony we went to Bono’s Restaurant for dinner. It’s owned by Christie Bono, daughter of the late Sonny Bono. It was LA County, after all, and we felt adding a celebrity angle would be fun.

We honeymooned in Compton, but that’s another story.

I enjoyed our fun, stress-free wedding, and I adore Terrence. Here’s to many, many more years together.

Thrifty Thursday: Teal and Denim Swapped Look

I love a bargain, and I like reducing my environmental footprint. That’s why I enjoy thrifting and swapping: They’re great ways to keep clothing out of the landfills and reduce commercial waste (manufacturing clothing uses a lot of resources). Here’s an outfit that I recently got for free at a clothing exchange.

swapped outfit

Jacket: swapped
Jeans: Gap via swapped
T-shirt: Target
Boots: Dr. Martens
Necklace: Reconstructed Clothing Co.

The teal, cotton jacket was a Brooklyn NY find but didn’t get enough wear so its owner brought it to a clothing exchange I recently went to. The gray jeans were too snug for their original recipient so I grabbed them. I already owned the t-shirt, boots, and necklace. The necklace, however, is made from a recycled ticket, so it counts as part of the ethical portion of this outfit.

My Holiday Party Outfit

I had a blast at this year’s company holiday party. The theme was a mashup of Alice in Wonderland and masquerade ball. With all the options surrounding both ideas, I knew getting dressed for the party would be fun. I wrote about what I did at the party earlier.

I decided to wear my tiny hat, and I worked in the rest of the outfit around that. This outfit doesn’t scream festive, but the fancy details make it party-appropriate.

Skirt: Neodandi
Gloves: Thrifted
Spider brooch: eBay
Clutch: Crystalyn Kae
Boots: John Fluevog

Necklace: Miss Michelle’s Family Jewels
Top: Swapped

I am so happy to debut this Neodandi skirt on my blog. I’ve had it for a while and I love it more and more. It’s a pair of men’s pinstripe trousers that have been upcycled into a fabulous fitted skirt. It’s wonderfully stitched together with fancy pleats and tucks and velvet ribbon detailing—and it fits like a glove. Neodandi is a local couture house. And they say Seattle isn’t on the fashion map!

details

Speaking of local artists, I found this cute Mad Hatter necklace at Miss Michelle’s booth at the Bizarre Bazaar in Capitol Hill just hours before the party. I snapped it up—it was a perfect addition for the theme of the party.

And finally, my amazing, glazed fabric clutch by Crystalyn Kae came in handy. This clutch feels like soft, supple leather, but it’s vegan! It’s dressy yet roomy. I put my phone, wallet, keys, lipstick and camera in the bag and had room to spare. I want one in every color. Crystalyn is a local designer who makes unique bags in fabric, glazed fabric, and recycled leather.

The vegan, local, upcycled, hand-made and/or thrifted and swapped items I’m sporting makes this outfit is a perfect candidate for the Ethical Fashion Bloggers December roundup. You can see the other member’s ethical outfits there too.

I hope you hade fun at a few holiday parties too. Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and all that sh–tuff!

Girls’ Brunch at the Edgewater

I recently had brunch with my travelling friends. Autumn, Cheryl and Laura. We’ve gone on annual trips every spring for the past four years. My post about the Santa Fe art walk was from one of those trips.

Our latest get-together was a planning brunch for trip number five. We met at The Edgewater Hotel in Seattle to discuss travel destinations over delicious food and mimosas. The view from the dining room was breathtaking.

Puget Sound

The hotel is famous for its many celebrity guests, including the Beatles. (You might recall the iconic photo of the band fishing out of their hotel window.) After brunch, we browsed around the lounge, which was decorated like a lodge and had a great view too.

We’ve been to Las Vegas, NV for shopping, dancing and gambling; Portland, OR for shopping, dancing and food; Zillah, WA for horseback riding and wine tastings; and Santa Fe for dining, shopping and art. This time, we decided to go to Vancouver, BC.

It was cold on this particular day, so I bundled up in my Nine West coat.

Under the coat, I had on a new necklace that my mom got me for my birthday. I mixed a chambray shirt with chocolate brown because denim goes with everything.

The brunch was so good that I’ve made a reservation at The Edgewater for my anniversary. I think Mr. Jean of all Trades will love it too!

What a day! Shopping, Dining, Dancing

Yesterday was a fun day! In the morning I met the coolest chimney cleaner. I volunteered to oversee the chimney cleaning for our condos and the guy who came by was a virtual dog whisper. He talked to my nervous, suspicious dog until he was calm and welcoming. The chimney looks great too!

Frankie

Then I met my friend Andrea at the Bizarre Bazaar in Capitol Hill. We found last-minute gifts from soaps to jewelry. Andrea bought a great necklace from HardWearables. I found organic soaps from Pirouette Essentials, and as luck would have it, I found Alice in Wonderland necklaces from Miss Michelle.

mad hatter

It was lucky because later that evening I attended an Alice in Wonderland-themed holiday party and the necklace was perfect!

Before the party, Mr. Jean of all Trades and I met up with Tatsuo and Cheryl, two of my coworkers and friends, at Red Fin for pre-party snacks and drinks.

bloody mary

We walked to the venue and met up with Laura and Autumn. After we got there, we had fun bumping into others, some of whom were hard to recognize in their masquerade outfits!

There was so much to do! The events were spread out over four floors. We saw acrobatic acts while we listened to accordions and nibbled on snacks in a faux outdoor bistro.

We passed by giant sets of chess and checkers where people were engaged in larger-than-life games. We saw an artist/chocolatier create a Cheshire cat out of chocolate.

People listened to live bands in one room, and had high tea in another. One room was full of desserts. Another space was a club called Icebar. Yes, there was an ice bar. There was also a DJ and go-go dancers. It was hopping!

The Mr. and I danced until the end of the event. What a fun night! There was something for everybody. It was a long, fabulous  day, and we went home tired. Just as it should be.

Robin’s Egg Blue with Brown

Robin’s egg blue is so cheery. It reminds me of, well, the tiny robin’s eggs I’ve seen in little robin’s nests. Today I wore this hue with chocolate brown.

brown and blue

The pattern of this dress reminds me of Missoni. The colors limit me to bluish-greens and neutrals, but I’ve remixed it quite a bit. Cream tights and tan boots; teal tights and a cream scarf; brown tights and a blue scarf, like I did today.

Land of the Sweets: Checking out the Burlesque Nutcracker

Last night my friend Shannon treated me to a special evening on the town. We went to see the Burlesque Nutcracker. It was her way of thanking me (again!) for doing a bit of artwork for Lucky Duck. I gave the little guy a Santa hat so he’s festive for the holidays. I feel like I got the better end of this deal.

We met at the Musicquarium (lounge) at The Triple Door and chatted over a cocktail while we waited for the show. We talked so long that we were the last ones seated in the theater. As soon as we found our table the show started! I think they were waiting for us.

lemondrop

We dined on delicious food from Wild Ginger, drank wine, and watched a funny, sexy show. Of course I couldn’t take pictures in the theater so you’ll have to go to a show yourself if you want to see what we saw. I can tell you this: The performance was amazing, the costumes were stunning, and the cast was extremely talented.

We saw ballet and modern dance numbers, aerial work and acrobatics, and of course, the sultry tease that is burlesque. It was classy and fun. After the show we met Lily Verlaine, the choreographer and one of the stars of the show, and Jasper McCann, the show’s hilarious and talented host.

Jasper, Shannon, and Lily

I went home with visions of sugarplum fairies dancing in my head. Thanks Shannon, for a great evening out!

(You can read Shannon’s account of the evening too.)
