Bare-faced Beauty Challenge

Here’s a challenge that had me nervous: Franca at Oranges and Apples proposed a “no makeup” post for Fashion Friend Beauty Friday. I don’t normally wear a lot of makeup, but I have a few standbys. I’m comfortable going without cosmetics at home or walking my dog, but to show the whole world? Wow! It’s the most I’ve stepped out of my comfort zone since I confessed my age.

bare-faced

wet hair

Here’s the trap I fall into: I need sunscreen, so I slather it on. Then I realize the lotion has made me shiny, so I add powder. The powder makes my eyelashes lighter, so I add eyeliner and mascara. And I’m addicted to lip balm, so I wear that. It’s not that I plan to wear a lot of makeup.

Straight out of the shower (and indoors where SPF isn’t required) is the only time I can avoid the trap. I also thought I should forgo hair products too and be 100% natural for the photos.

air-dried

Sometimes though, it’s fun to get dolled up. I like wearing lipstick and eye shadow. It’s also good sometimes to take a step back and not rely on makeup. If too many months go by and I haven’t gone bare-faced, I start to feel like I need all the extras. I don’t want to feel like makeup is vital. I need to remember that I’m not made of plastic. It’s good to see skin.

I started to wear light makeup in junior high. In high school, I started to wear more and, as a result, I often passed for older than I was. As a fledgling feminist in university, I “stuck it to the Man” and abandoned makeup for a while. But I made peace with cosmetics when I realized they don’t define my beliefs.

Now, I appreciate a good concealer and I like lipstick. Interestingly, most guys don’t “get” makeup, and my boyfriends have often preferred me without it.

What’s your relationship with makeup? Do you wear it every day? Sometimes? Never? What product can’t you live without?

Bright Tights, Big City

By now you know I love a challenge. This month’s Everybody, Everywear challenge is tights! I love tights, so participating is a no-brainer.

I debuted a hot pink pair of tights that I bought at Target a month or two ago. They’re slightly merled, and oh so comfy. First, I paired them with a multi-colored patterned skirt and purple top but it was too busy for me. So I changed into this subdued ensemble to let the tights shine.

pink tights

Dress: Boutique in LA
Shrug: Thrifted
Tights: Target
Cuff: Greenbelts
Scarf: Fred Meyer’s
Shoes: Payless

I knew I was onto something when the first person I saw at the coffee shop said, “nice tights!” I guess they do get noticed.

tights

Tight Tips:

  • When shopping for tights, look for denier. The larger the number the more opaque they will be. If you don’t want to see through your tights, go with at least 40 or 50 denier. Thick cotton or wool tights might be 80 or 100.
  • If you buy tights that have cardboard in them for shelf appeal, bend the cardboard before removing it so you don’t snag the tights.
  • Moisturize your legs and feet before putting on your tights, and make sure your nails are smooth.
  • Before you put on your tights, gather the fabric to scrunch up the leg and slip your toes into them so you don’t snag the tights.
  • Pull your tights up gently with the pads of your fingers, never with your nails. Running a damp hand up your leg after your tights are on will help grip the tights and pull them up higher without poking a hole in them.
  • Before you put your shoes, on, pull the toe of the tights to take the pressure off the fabric and help prevent holes in the toes.
  • If your tights won’t stay up, try wearing a pair of boy-cut underwear over the tights.
  • If you get a small run in your tights, paint clear nail polish on the spot to prevent it from running further.
  • Always hand-wash your tights or put them in a lingerie bag before putting them in the washer (and hang them to dry instead of using the dryer).

Check out how all the others are wearing tights at Everybody, Everywear.

Burberry Kilt

I’ve always liked second-hand shops. But it’s only recently that I made peace with the idea of paying top dollar for gently used goods. Normally I pay a mere couple of bucks for a jacket or pair of pants at Goodwill or a small thrift shop. But with my Prada boots, Manolo Blahnik pumps, and now this, my Burberry kilt, I’ve been paying more.

Sweater: Target
Cardigan: Ross Dress for Less
Kilt: Burberry via Ragamoffyn’s
Tights: Roots Canada
Shoes: John Fluevog

The good news is, I’ve paid “normal” prices for designer items. This kilt retails for over $600. That ain’t happening! I got it at Ragamoffyn’s for $80. Not cheap, but it’s made in Scotland. I’ve never had anything made in Scotland before. Even the souvenir pen I bought in Scotland was made somewhere else.

I’ll still buy regular items at thrift stores, but when I do want a designer piece, or high-quality item that I know will last, there are places I can go to find them without paying astronomical prices.

Do you thrift? What your best thrifting find?

An Evening with Winemaker Tom Campbell at ROAD Apparel

Last night my hubby and I attended a special event at ROAD Apparel, a local men’s clothing store with locations in Seattle and Bellevue. The special guest in the Seattle store was Tom Campbell, a pioneer in the Washington wine industry.

Tom Campbell has two wineries, Mission Mountain Winery in Dayton, Montana and Tanjuli Winery in Zillah, Washington. He’s also the Director of Wine Production for Woodhouse Family Estates in Woodinville, Washington. When Tom started growing wine, Washington had only 17 wineries. There are now over 700. Needless to say, we learned a lot about wine from Tom. His wines also tasted amazing. No wonder they’ve won over 100 awards.

I tasted the Tanjuli Winery 2009 Viognier and 2007 Malbec as well as the Mission Mountain Winery Cocoa Vin Chocolate Port. I ordered all three. The chocolate port was rich and sweet. It’s rumored to taste divine when poured over vanilla ice cream. Yum!

After the wine tasting, I snacked on food samplings from Chutney’s and Shiki. Then came the apparel perusing. I saw a lot of fantastic items that I think a certain Mr. Jean of All Trades would love to see under the tree this Christmas. He had his eye on a watch, and I found wonderful messenger bags, scarves, jeans, shirts, and jackets.

I found stylish people everywhere I turned. The first person I bumped into happened to be my colleague, Paul, who was enjoying the event with his friend, Pete. Paul is wearing ROAD apparel jeans; Pete has on a ROAD Apparel shirt and jeans. Looking good, guys!

I stopped these two stylish fellows on their way in. They let me snap a shot as long as I promised to feature their shoes. See, they work at Seattle’s flagship location of Aldo and are modeling the latest in men’s footwear. Of course I was happy to oblige.

I met a man named Craig wearing a scarf from ROAD. I love the stripes and the pop of color. He wears it well, don’t you think?

I made a final lap of the store, chatted with a few wonderful people, including an amazing chance encounter with ROAD co-creator, Raj Shah!

It was a fun event and everyone enjoyed themselves. The store was packed and everyone was having fun, Between the stylish clothing, delicious wine, and tasty treats, it was an all-round great evening. Thanks, Julia, for inviting me!

Street Style: Winter White and Plaid

Dont you just love this coat? I saw Caryn wearing it and ran over to compliment her on it. When she buttoned up the lapel to create a stylish funnel-neck collar, I was sold. I asked her to pose for my street style post and she kindly obliged.

plaid coat

Caryn has always had a great fashion sense (and the best accessory ever: strawberry blonde hair) but I think the coolest part of this story is that she’s had this coat in her closet—unworn—for two years. See, Caryn recently lost 100 pounds and this coat was part of what motivated her to get into single-digit sizes.

Talk about a major accomplishment! I’m so proud of Caryn for being dedicated to her health and following through on her goals. In her case, good old-fashioned exercise and a healthy, moderate diet got her here. She loves having more energy and having so many more sartorial choices.

outfit details

Now back to the coat: I love winter white and plaid so when I saw them together I swooned. It’s a great fall look but it’s light and bright. I like cheery coats and this one fits the bill. I really like how Caryn kept her silhouette lean with skinny jeans and nude ballet flats.

Color blocking with a Mock Turtleneck

I love the color and softness of this short-sleeved, mock turtleneck but I have trouble finding opportunities to wear it. It’s either too hot for a turtleneck or too cold for short sleeves.

Here, I wore it with a cardigan. Practical, yes, but it covers up the keyhole cutout on the back of the top. One day soon, I’ll wear it with a pencil skirt and I’ll skip the cardi.

I love this skirt. I’ve had it for years. The slight fishtail at the back is sexy, but it’s toned down enough for work. Plus, it’s super comfy to wear a cozy jersey knit while sitting at a PC all day.

Graffiti-Inspired Pink and Gray

While wandering through Belltown, a Seattle neighborhood, a few weeks ago, I took a picture of a graffiti wall. It’s next to Vain hair salon and is part of a public parking lot. I enjoy artistic graffiti, but don’t appreciate tagging or vandalism. There’s a fine line between the two and a lot of it boils down to personal opinion. This wall reminded me of living in Toronto. I loved when the subway emerged from underground and ran, surface-level, behind the buildings on Bloor Street. The back of the buildings had an ever-changing array of graffiti.

I liked the combination of the black wall and brights, so I promised myself to use this inspiration. I pulled out my fuchsia pants and paired them with a graphite-colored top. Sometimes it’s nice to have a casual day.

Bright pink pants are not for the shy. I wore these for the color-blocking challenge recently. How would you style pink pants (or would you)? What do you think about graffiti? Does it have a place? It is art?

Fall Color Theme

I love orange. Actually, orange and navy is my favorite color combo. Today, I wore orange with black, but I added olive green to keep with the season without screaming “Halloween.”

I can’t get enough of the beautiful leaves this time of year. They change color and drop so quickly so I have to appreciate the hues while I can. I am constantly amazed by the golds and reds and the interesting ombre transitions on the trees. I love fall! What do you like about autumn? What’s your favorite season?

Replacing My Long-lost Black Maxi Dress

Years ago, when maxi dresses were simply called “long dresses,” I had a short-sleeved, long, black dress. It was a cotton jersey knit (t-shirt material) and it was so comfy. Yet it made me look pulled together and stylish. I wore it with statement necklaces, cardis, blazers, scarves (not all at the same time). This one dress was so versatile. And then I gave it away.

I’ve regretted it ever since. I’m sure if I still had it, I’d see that it’s not the right fit or length or something. But in my mind, it was perfect. It was surprisingly hard to find a replacement. I’d looked high and low for a (reasonably priced) substitute, to no avail. Finally, I saw one at Lulu’s (and I wasn’t even looking).

Lulu’s also had the dress in burnt orange. So tempting. I thought I’d start with the neutral though.

Dress: Lulu’s
Jacket: Macy’s
Belt: Forever 21
Purse: Thrifted
Boots: Prada

Yes, you read that right. The boots are Prada. But I didn’t pay $600 for them. I found them a few years ago on eBay for $50. I’d really wanted a pair of Prada’s microfiber ankle boots and I was thrilled to find a nearly new pair for less than 10% of the original price.

Also, you might not see it, but the belt is leopard and my jacket is plaid, which means I’ve successfully mixed patterns again! I have trouble taking the pattern-mixing plunge and I’m happy with baby steps.
