Mint Green Scooter Dress

I’m so happy with my new minty green mini dress. I love mod, 60s-inspired designs and fell in love with the Mondrian-esque color-blocking on this number.

Dress: Lois Eastlund
Shoes: Adrienne Vitadini
Bag: Forever 21

I was lucky to stumble into a pop-up shop when I spent the day in Chelsea last month and when I saw the dresses in the Lois Eastlund display, I had a hard time deciding.

So I picked two: this summer sale number and a blue and black shift from her fall line.

minty dress

Even though this is a summery style, I plan on wearing it with a cardi and knee-high boots when the weather cools. For today though, I paired this shift with my polypropylene wedges–they’re stretchy like a Body Glove swimsuit!

Luckily Seattle is experiencing one last heat wave before fall hits so I can continue enjoying my summer clothes. Are you clinging to summer or have you switched into autumn wear?

Visiting Chelsea

During the recent New York trip I took with my parents, we visited the Chelsea neighborhood. We spent the morning in the Chelsea Market, a multi-story building that used to be occupied by the National Biscuit Company (Nabisco) commercial bakery. When production methods changes required a single-floor layout, the bakery moved out. It’s here, where the Oreo was first created.

Chelsea Market

Inside the market, we found One Lucky Duck. They offer all-vegan, raw organic juices and take-away, and happen to have amazing desserts. It’s part of the Pure Food and Wine establishment so you know you’re going to be wowed.

lemon bar

Next door, Beyond Sushi truly satisfied. This all plant-based sushi establishment incorporated flavor, color and presentation like no other sushi place I’ve seen. Their rolls were scrumptious and fueled us as well.

I was thrilled to stumble into a pop-up shop in the market, where several vendors had set up their wares. One of them was designer Lois Eastlund.

Lois Eastlund

While I was trying on a dress, my mom and Lois struck up a conversation and they discovered they’re both vegan! Lois even shared some of her home-baked vegan cookies with us! (And yes, I bought that amazing blue and black zigzag dress.)

Lois and Jean

I liked the shop across from Lois’ store too. My mom was sweet enough to buy me one of their screen-printed tops.

There’s more to Chelsea than just the market. One evening we met my friend Shannon, a recent New York transplant, at Blossom vegan restaurant.

Chelsea girls

We ate delicious food and even had authentic (and dairy-free) New York Cheesecake!

Another Chelsea gem is the popular High Line, an elevated former rail line that was transformed into a greenway. The rail line used to bring animals into the city for slaughter. I prefer its use as a park!

New York is such a fun place. Have you ever been to Chelsea?

Gray Cropped Skinnies and Flats

Today called for comfort so I opted for this super soft t-shirt and gray skinnies. I bought these shorts for $5 at an outlet store. What a deal! I’ve worn them dozens of times, making this a great buy.

I’m on track to wear these flats a lot too. I bought them at the vegan bloggers conference I went to in May and I’ve worn them a lot already. In fact, they’re coming with me to New York. They’re the perfect city walking shoe.

The shoes are from Compassionate Couture, an all-vegan, eco-friendly online shop (I had the pleasure of meeting the founders at the conference).

My Travel Makeup Bag

I don’t wear a lot of makeup on a regular basis, but I do like (and need) a bit. Couple that with my need to pack light (I never take more than a carry-on suitcase), and you can see why picking the right products for a trip is paramount. Additionally, I only use product that are vegan and haven’t been tested on animals. Here’s what I’m taking on my upcoming trip.

makeup

My Arbonne day cream isn’t makeup per se, but it’s got SPF 20 and is an important way to start my make-up routine. I’m also bringing a tinted moisturizer with SPF. This Josie Maran is a great substitute for foundation and has SPF 30. It’s a great no makeup look. I find it really natural-looking and they have shades for almost anyone.

I’ll definitely need a concealer and this little tube (lower right) by Too Faced is perfect for under my eyes or to cover a blemish.

A light dusting of powder foundation is optional, but I like to be prepared. The Bare Minerals foundation also has SPF and is a nice way to mattify is sunscreen gets me shiny.

I usually buy single pots of eye shadow because it’s rare that I like all the shades in a set, but this Stila kit is an exception. It has five shadows that I can mix and match for day or night and a convertible lip and cheek cream. It includes a mirror and folds flat. They have several travels sets. I bought Vibrant in Vancouver.

I’m packing a dark brown eye liner by Jordana (proving you don’t have to buy from higher-end brands to get a good product). I buy Jordana because it’s inexpensive, goes on smoothly and gently, and is available in a myriad of colors. Plus, just about any drug store carries it.

I can’t live without my Stila liquid brow liner. The secret to a natural look is the right shade. I use blonde, and I make tiny brush strokes in the direction of my brows. It’s great to fill in and define. Well defined brows really frame the face and are youthful looking.

My BWC (Beauty Without Cruelty) mascara is also a must. If I had to narrow down my routine to three products it would be brows, lashes and lips.

I packed a bright red lip stain from Stila because it’s an easy way to go from day to night and the cheek cream in the kit is pretty neutral.

Finally, Booda Butter keeps my lips moisturized day and night. I have one in my purse at all times.

As for my other skin and body care, here’s what I’m taking.

skin care

If I were going to a hotel, I’d skip the shampoo and body wash, but I’ll need my own so I’m packing a solid shampoo from Lush (just lather like soap and apply to wet hair like you would a liquid shampoo). It’ll be nice to pack a solid because I won’t have to worry about it in my carry-on (or at security checks).

I’m taking 3 ounces or less of hand sanitizerbody wash, a small tube of sunscreen (when I went to Hawaii I packed four little tubes instead of one big one–to make my bag carry-on approved), night cream, a bit of hairspray in a carry-on spritzer, hand sanitizer and a face cloth. My Norwex face cloth removes makeup better than a makeup remover so it’s one less liquid I have to pack.

So there you have it. What are your travel makeup essentials? Are you a light packer like I am or to you prefer to be prepared?

Stars and Stripes with Booties

I’m really digging the skirt-and-booties look. Sometimes sandals are just too predictable. Then again, sometimes boots in summer are too hot. When I find the perfect balance of “warm enough for bare legs” and “not too hot for boots” I jump on the chance.

stars and stripes

Top: Old Navy
Skirt: Forever 21
Booties: Urban Outfitters
Purse: Matt and Nat
Cuff: Florida street market
Cat: Petfinder

I really wanted to wear this blue and white stars T with red skinnies for an all-American look but I thought yellow was an interesting mix. Plus, the way the fabric of the skirt is folded makes it almost look like it’s striped. So I’m still sporting stars and stripes!

skirt and booties

I added brown and green to keep things from looking too coordinated. When I first put this together, I thought I’d gone overboard, but I think it works.

I’m having a lot of fun in my garden this summer. We’ve been living in our new house for a year already so I’ve had the chance to experience all the seasons. I’ve planted a bit, but mostly it was wait-and-see until now. I’ve decided to replace the front yard with clover. The wild rabbits and bees will love it and I won’t have to mow it. The backyard is where the animals hang out so I can’t attract too many bees back here!

Beating the Heat

It’s not as hot as it was a few weeks ago, but it’s still warm, and I’m always on the lookout for ways to stay cool. My plants were thirsty so I relaxed in the backyard and did a bit of watering.

Do you see the little bee house on the right? I had mason bees in my garden this spring. They don’t sting and they don’t make honey, but they are great pollinators. After a few weeks, the females fill the house with next year’s bees (in cocoons) and then they die. I’ll take this batch of future bees into the garage for the winter and bring them out to hatch in the spring.

Alice and Jean

My cat, Alice, joined me in the garden. She’s blind, so she can’t escape the yard like most cats, but she really enjoys exploring. She’s even started running! If I say “run run run” she knows the coast is clear and she takes off. When I say “careful!” she knows to slow down. She’s smashed into the house, pots, and chairs before so the warning word really helps her. She’s a smartie!

Alice wants down

After making sure all the plants were watered, I poured myself a glass of rosé–that’s seems like the best way to cool off!

Primary Colors

I’m actually surprised that these neon pants are still in rotation. I bought them over a year ago and thought they’d be a fad. But at $10, I didn’t mind.

yellow and blue

Top: H&M
Pants: The Gap
Upcycled belt: Couch Guitar Straps
Shoes: Flexx
Ring: Etsy Rain craft fair

Well, I love the boyfriend cut and how comfortable they are. And, despite being painfully bright, I like the color. Definitely noticeable. Every time  I wear them I get compliments–or at least comments!

upcycled belt

Today, instead of wearing neutrals, I went primary. The complementary color to yellow is blue, so I thought that would work. And for fun, I added a red vinyl belt. It’s made from deadstock (unused materials) and would have been a VW seat but sat in a warehouse, unneeded, until the Couch Guitar Straps company rescued the fabric and turned it into belts and guitar straps.

green accessory

I was trying for an all-color, no black outfit. I did, at least, stick to neutral footwear. Green is a secondary color but I managed to wear by green nerds ring (it’s made of tiny candy set in resin). Not edible, but really fun.

brights for summer

On a side note, now that my hair is longer I’ve been using my Hana flat iron a lot more. I love the results and I’m glad I had the chance to try it as my hair was growing out.

Why I Shop

At the beginning of the year I joined the Wartime Wardrobe Challenge, a fun way to monitor and limit consumption by using the clothes rationing coupon system used in the UK during WWII, when supplies and raw materials were limited. I started with 66 point and they were supposed to last me all year.

Well, I’m out. I’m out of points so I’m bowing out of the challenge.

I did learn a few things from it though.

First, if it really was wartime, and my brothers and husband were off fighting Nazis and fascists, I probably wouldn’t feel like shopping.

cannon

Second, I didn’t really change my shopping habits or use my points carefully. Every month or so I’d remember the challenge and tally up what I’d bought and how many points it was going to cost me. I knew that for every coupon overspend, I’d need to donate to charity. I already do that and I’d have to buy a lot more to catch up with the amount I’ve already given.

Third, our economy relies of the exchange of goods and services. If everyone stopped shopping, it wouldn’t be a good thing. That said, living within ones means is really important–being in debt is dangerous.

I like shopping second-hand–it’s a great way to make my shopping dollar stretch further–but charities aren’t always perfect. Sometimes their workers are exploited while their CEOs make millions. Sometimes the things Americans don’t buy get shipped to Africa, essentially ruining their domestic textile markets.

What I look for, in order of importance, are:

  • Animal-free clothing (as a vegan I don’t buy fur, leather, wool, silk, etc.)
  • Quality items that won’t fall apart and end up in a landfill
  • Fair labor conditions where workers get a living wage
  • Green business practices that have a small carbon footprint

An example of something I bought that meets these criteria is the pair of Novacas boots I novacasbought. They’re 100%vegan, from a European worker-friendly factory, and are PVC-free. I got them from a local vegan business, The Chocolate Shoebox, that I was happy to support.

I also recently ordered two pair of jeans from Sonas Denim, a San Francisco company that uses denim scraps to make great new patchwork-style jeans. The company is vegan-owned and donates 10% of its profits to animal welfare groups. When my new jeans arrive, you can bet I’ll be blogging about them!

My purchases at ROThe Base Project hires African artisans to create one-of-a-kind bracelets from discarded PVC pipe. Brilliant! You can see The Base Project bracelet in this photo, along with another vegan bracelet, handmade ring, and one-of-a-kind dress. I bought them all from Roberta Oaks, a shop owner an up-and-coming designer in Honolulu.

Next month, when I visit NYC, I’ll be buying a wool-free winter coat from Vaute Couture, another vegan company I’m happy to support.

It’s not my job to single-handedly keep the economy going, and shopping ethically is not a simple thing–there are lots of factors to consider. However, I’m happy to spend when I can afford to and support businesses I believe in.

I’m grateful to the Little House in Town and The Double Life of Mrs. M for organizing this challenge and getting me thinking about shopping.

Tough Love

I feel a little tough in this outfit. Sure the t-shirt says “love,” but the style is all attitude. If you know me though, you know I can’t really be a tough chic–as much as I’d like to.

tough love

Faux leather jacket: Forever 21
T-shirt: Forever 21
Pants with belt: Macy’s
Boots: G by Guess (at T.J. Maxx)

I got this jacket at Forever 21. Nothing to be proud of really, but it was a non-leather replacement for a leather jacket I got rid of. Sometimes going cheap is a good way to get vegan leather alternatives–as long as it doesn’t fall apart and end up in a landfill in two weeks!

black and olive

My boots are also faux. They’re G by Guess, and I guess that’s their lower-end line. Suits me fine. They’re comfortable and who doesn’t want a nice combat boot? I’ve even worn these with long and short skirts for a 90s grunge vibe.

thinking of Morrissey

True confession: I wore this exact outfit to Portland when I saw Morrissey perform a few months back. I don’t often repeat outfits exactly, but I like this one.

Comfy Ballet Flats

One of my recent shopping goals was finding a pair of comfortable shoes that I can take with me on my upcoming trip to New York. When I was at the vegan bloggers conference I happened upon the Compassionate Couture booth, where I found a cute pair of flats by Reneu.

Shoes: Renue via Compassionate Couture
Bag: Victoria’s Secret
Cuff: Rogue City Killers

Compassionate Couture is an online retailer that curates a terrific selection of stylish, cruelty-free and eco-friendly clothing, shoes and accessories. It’s run by two sisters (whom I met at the booth) who left corporate America to help trendsetters stay true to their ethics without sacrificing style. That’s a company I can get behind!

bag and shoes

I tried these shoes on and practically didn’t take them off. They are lined, if you will, with memory foam (the kind used in tempurpedic beds) so they are cushiony and soft. They’re going to be perfect for wandering around Manhattan!

comfy outfit

Coincidentally, they also match my laptop bag. I don’t try to match shoes and purses (I usually try not to) but I liked how these two items went together.

eco outfit

The second eco item I’m wearing is the recycled inner tube cuff I recently bought to replace the upcycled leather one I’ve worn off and on for a few years. The other one was made of an old belt, so it was eco too, but I don’t want to wear any animal products anymore. The rubber looks leather-like and it’s vegan! I bought two and I might buy more. The stitching color makes each one look unique.
