Seattle’s Space Needle Turns 50

My house and the Space Needle are the same age–and both show no signs of slowing down. Middle age suits these two buildings well.

space needle

Mid-Century Modern design was all the rage in 1962. The Space Needle was built for the World Fair. The fair was comprised of structures and exhibits that showcased science, technology, art, fashion, and the world of tomorrow. To celebrate the half century mark, the owners of the Space Needle painted the top galaxy gold, just like it looked during the 1962 World Fair.

After the fair, the Space Needle remained, of course, along with the other buildings. The area is called Seattle Center and is the home of the Pacific Science Center, Experience Music Project (a recent addition), International Fountain, and the brand new Chihuly Garden and Glass, featuring work by local glass artist Dale Chihuly. It’s also where the monorail departs from.

Just peeking at the Seattle Center site, shows an enormous number of events. In addition to walking the grounds and taking in the art and architecture, on any given day, you’re bound to find music events and cultural celebrations.

point of view

When I first came to Seattle I was disappointed that the Space Needle wasn’t taller. The CN Tower in my hometown of Toronto is over twice its height. But after living here since the needle was 38 years old, I realize that size doesn’t matter. The character, the history, and what the needle represents is what’s important.

Even though the Needle isn’t the tallest building in Seattle, it appears that way from Highland Park in Queen Anne. That’s where I took these pictures. From this vantage point, the needle is in the foreground and the city is behind it. Downtown Seattle is almost a mile away from the Seattle Center.

view from Highland Park

If you’re in Seattle, check out the park–it’s just a strip of land, but has fabulous views. Then, head over to the Needle. Instead of paying (and waiting) to go to the observation deck, I recommend going straight up to Sky City, the revolving restaurant at the top of the Needle. You won’t need to pay for an elevator ticket and you can bypass the lines. Once there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the city and Puget Sound while you eat.

Happy birthday Space Needle!

Tone on Tone Gray

Monochrome is the new colorblock. I haven’t tried head to toe one-color yet, but I am starting slowly with H2T gray. Not exciting? It can be if the hues are different, the accessories are fun (and maybe, just maybe, you throw in a touch of some other color). Have you tried head-to-toe monochrome yet?

Top: Marshalls
Skirt: Target
Shoes: Aerosoles
Cuffs: Greenbelts and Claire’s
Earrings: Airport kiosk

I love the comfort of a maxi skirt but sometimes they hide one’s shape. That’s why I paired this skirt with an asymmetrical top with pleating and buttons. It adds detail and a bit of bodycon-ness (is that a word?).

gray top

I’m getting in one last wear with these marigold sandals before I put them away until spring. But with such a neutral outfit, any color shoe would work.

Little Red Dress: Three Different Ways

Every closet needs a little black dress. But if you’re in the mood for color, try a little RED dress! A few months ago I was hooked on the show Fashion Star, where upcoming designers compete to have their collections in H&M, Macy’s or Saks Fifth Avenue.

This dress is one of winner Kara Laricks designs. I ran to Macy’s the day after she won and found it on the Fashion Star racks. It came in black too, but I already have a LBD (or three).

First I styled it for a warm weather daytime event–like lunch with friends.

Clutch: Crystalyn Kae
Sunglasses: Florida street market
Shoes: Aerosoles

Then I swapped out the shoes and clutch and dressed it up for a date.

Clutch: Victoria’s Secret
Shoes: Tory Burch via consignment

Finally, I added tights and a cardi to show that a summer dress is suitable all year long.

Clutch: Swapped
Necklace: Sue Huston
Tights: Target
Shoes: Payless

I love how the hem is slightly longer at the back. It’s not an extreme, bi-level “mullet-style” so it’s not super trendy. But it feels fresh and unique.

I have to point out this amazing find from STA in Boston. Tory Burch shoes (never worn) for $40! They go great with everything. I think they’d look best on a darker skin tone, where they’d be a true nude. For me, they stand out a bit more, but I love the warm caramel tone and metallic toe. They go with the VS clutch too!

Solaire Chairs for my Front Entry

When I bought my house, I thought of all the wonderful Mid-Century things I could do to it. The place was built in 1961 and is begging for a retro remodel.

One of my first projects was sprucing up the front (if you look back, the area to the left of the entry was soil, with a topiary-style tree and a yellow bush). I remembered an amazing style of chair from my childhood. I didn’t know the name of the chair, but several web searches later, I found out: The Solaire.

Solaire chair

Two Solaire chairs now sit in my front entry. As luck would have it, one of the few places in the country where I found the chairs was right here in Seattle!

two Solaire Chairs

I transplanted the tree and bush to the backyard, covered the soil with weed-inhibiting fabric from the garden store, and laid down a layer of pebbles. Now I have two sunny pops of color by my front door and a place for friends to sit. The backyard is quieter and more private, but it’s nice to people watch and catch the evening sun from the front.

orange and yellow Solaire chairs

I like the story behind the chair. The Solaire was designed in 1972 by Fabio Fabiano and Michelange Panzini. It’s a terrific representation of a clean, modern design. They were popular poolside in backyards and motels across Canada and the USA. I’m proud to have a piece of Canadian design history. And in case anyone else wants them, I chained them down! But if you’re in Seattle, you can buy them at Click! Design That Fits.

Gold T-shirt Dress with Red Accents

Last summer, I wore this dress with black accessories. Here, I added more color–mainly because I want to get a bit more use out of my red wedge sandals before the rain hits.

t-shirt dress

Dress: Sears
Tank: Old Navy
Belt: Nordstrom
Cuff: Claire’s
Necklace: eBay
Shoes: Chelsea Crew

To keep things from getting too matchy-matchy, I added a white belt and black necklace.

red and gold

I call this gold, but it’s got greenish undertones. It’s almost chartreuse. Not quite mustard. I don’t really know what you’d call this (any ideas?) but I liked it when I saw it on the clearance rack in Sears.

dress with red acccessories

One thing I haven’t done is winterize it. I’m going to try to wear this as a tunic with skinny jeans soon. Any chance I can get to turn dresses into top, I’ll take. I think I have a disproportionate amount of pants and skirts. I probably need more tops and fewer bottoms.

Do you have an ideal ratio of tops to bottoms?

Scarf Top and Denim Capris

It’s hard to believe it’s October! The weather is in the 70s–and it still hasn’t rained! That’s about 70 days of dry.

capris and a scarf tshirt

Top: TJ Maxx
Tank: Old Navy
Capris: True Originals
Cuff: The Fashion Truck
Shoes: Chelsea Crew

I’m not complaining. I’m wearing a sheer, gauzy summer top that looks like two square scarves sewn together. It would be an easy shirt project, in fact. I know I said that last year and still haven’t tried it.

the shirt

I wore this last year with shorts and skinny jeans. I think it works with capris too. And of course, I had to wear my red sandals too. I love these–despite the fact that the cork is falling off. I promised to do a DIY tutorial on replacing the cork with sparkles–and I will (soon). Probably before I get around to making a shirt like this!

Anjolee Diamond Hoop Earrings

Today I have a special review. I’m taking a pair of beautiful, diamond hoop earrings by Anjolee on a test drive. They are gorgeous–and make me feel like a star!

Jean wearing Anjolee Earrings

Each item at Anjolee is custom-made. That means you can select your metal, shape, size, and the quality of the stones. Anjolee is a U.S. company that employs over 100 people in San Diego. They’re committed to ethical sourcing and environmental responsibility. All of which are values I can get behind.

And did I tell you that I feel like a star?

close-up of earrings

I chose the Must-Have Diamond Hoop Earrings because I was looking to try something that I could wear every day and for special occasions. Anjolee has a lot of necklaces and pendants available too, especially diamond pendant necklaces. But I also like their bracelets. There’s something so timeless about a diamond tennis bracelet.

tennis bracelet

I asked the people at Anjolee a few questions about their company and products. Here’s the interview:

Jean: Anjolee custom-makes all its pieces. What does that mean for customers?

Anjolee: We offer the ability to custom build all jewelry designs by metal type (gold or platinum), diamond quality, carat size and length. Our easy to use customization feature allows customers to purchase exactly what they want rather than settling for a stock item in a retail store. Our customers have raved about the ability to modify these components! Our customer feedback section is full of real testimonials discussing this point.

Jean: Diamonds are an investment and can cost a lot. Is there a good entry-point for the first-time diamond buyer?

Anjolee: The best advice we can offer is to do your research on the four c’s of diamond buying. For smaller carat size stones, it is recommended to focus on a good cut, color, and symmetry. For larger sized diamonds, imperfections have a better chance of being visible to the unaided eye, so you will want to look for good clarity ratings in addition to other four c’s.

Jean: The holidays are coming. What items are the most popular gifts? On that note, what holiday is the biggest jewelry-giving holiday?

Anjolee: Holidays are a popular time to give the gift of jewelry. Christmas, Valentine’s and Anniversaries are the three biggest occasions for gift giving. One trend we noticed is choosing an anniversary ring with the exact amount of stones for that anniversary year. For example, if it is your tenth anniversary, choosing a beautiful diamond anniversary ring with exactly ten stones is a great sentiment. For Christmas and Valentines Day, we sell a lot of our diamond and gemstone pendants as well as classic diamond tennis bracelets.

Jean: A lot of my readers are women. Do women buy their husbands and boyfriends jewelry too? What pieces are popular for the guys?

Anjolee: Women definitely buy jewelry for their companion. We carry many men’s bracelets that are heavier in design and can be crafted in gold or platinum. Some men wear this as a statement piece on the opposite wrist as their watch.

Jean: What trends do you see in wedding sets and bridal jewelry?

Anjolee: Right now, the biggest trend we are seeing with bridal sets and jewelry is the new halo design. A halo design typically features a center diamond surrounded by many smaller diamonds creating a halo effect. This modern design intensifies the diamond sparkle. A halo ring can make the center diamond appear larger, since it is accented by many smaller stones.

~

Even if you’re not planning to buy yourself any jewelry, the holidays are just around the corner. Now’s the time to start hinting! And if you’re hoping to get engaged, leave this post open on your PC. Anjolee has beautiful engagement rings too!

Anjolee is even offering a discount for readers! Use the coupon code MP591 for an extra 5% off your order.

Anjolee hoop earrings

Keep an eye out for these earrings in future blog posts: I’ll be showing how I style them. Of course they’ll look classic and timeless with dressy attire, but I’m going to wear them with casual outfits too. There’s nothing like fine jewelry to take jeans and a t-shirt to a new level–it adds an element of luxe that nothing else can.

Taking a Walk on the Wild Side

Here’s a look-at-me dress. It’s neutral, not bright, but animal prints are definitely bold, no matter what their hue.

animal print dress

Dress: Marshall’s
Shoes: Manolo Blahnik
Purse: Crystalyn Kae
Cuff: Lauren Harkness

I love animal prints! I also have a snakeskin faux-wrap dress, a grey-tone leopard print shirt dress, and a green and blue leopard print wrap dress. Do I really own four animal print dresses? Lions and tigers and bears, oh my!

animal attraction

This one was a steal at Marshall’s and is my first in brown and tan. I scored the shoes at Second Time Around consignment during my trip to Boston. STA is an amazing place. I’ve dreamt of going back to Boston just to hit up their three locations in beantown. If there’s one near you, don’t miss it!

Thrifty Thursday: Plaid Jeans

I hit the Goodwill jackpot a few months ago and brought home several great pieces, including these gray and black plaid jeans.

plaid skinnies

They were $5 and fit perfectly. They’re YMI brand. I’d never heard of the label so I don’t know if they’re originally $20 or $200 (I suspect closer to the former), but I liked them.

I recently wore them car shopping with hubby. We weren’t in the market for a car, but window shopping for vehicles is one of his favorite pastimes. Here, I found neat, old Chevy station wagon.

Pants: Goodwill
Purse: Target
Sunglasses: Old Navy
Necklace: eBay
Shoes (not shown): Payless

I dressed up an otherwise simple outfit with this neat star necklace I found on eBay. There’s a lot of fun costume jewelry to be found it you have the time and patience. All in all, not bad for a $45 outfit, including shoes and accessories).

Bloggers Do It Better: Oxblood

I’m participating in another group challenge. This one is Bloggers Do It Better by Pretty Shiny Sparkly and the theme is oxblood. Now when I recently posted my shoes of that color, Sarah Hulbert of Sarah Hulbert Style called them merlot in her comment. I like that idea much better! My first pair of Dr Martens were called oxblood–the name’s been around a while, and the color is in again is in–but calling it wine sounds much better.

merlot scarf

Today I wore just a touch of merlot, but I was surrounded by gorgeous shades of burgundy, bordeaux, and wine. I was at Portalis, a wine shop in Ballard, WA, tasting wines and learning about a wine-themed novel called Killer Cuvée.

I chatted Steve Wells, the author of the book, bought a copy, and selected a couple of nice Washington wines too.

Just before leaving the shop, hubby and I looked up and saw the most interesting skylight: It was made of wine bottles. Love the colors! This is one glass ceiling I’d be happy to have!
