Black and White on the Beach

One of the first things I did when I got to Florida was go to the beach. I’m not a sun worshipper, but the warm weather was a treat. I walked from our condo to the beach with my dad after dinner one evening, after the hottest rays were over.

The water was warm, but I didn’t swim. We looked for sea shells and watched a kite boarder. I bought these shorts in Santa Fe last spring but I’d never worn them before. They turned out to be a perfect alternative to a skirt on a windy beach.

It was hard to pose on the sand, and the wind was whipping our hair, but we had a lot of fun. Hard to believe it’s January.

Greetings from the Florida Everglades!

I escaped the Seattle ice storm in the nick of time: I had plans to meet family in Florida and nearly didn’t make it. But luck was on my side. We rendezvoused in Fort Lauderdale. Our first excursion was visiting the Everglades. We went to Shark Valley. Unlike the images of mangroves and vines and murky rivers, Shark Valley looks like a flat, grassy plain. Of course it’s a marsh, and beneath the grass is a 2.5 million-acre water filter that happens to be swarming with alligators.

I ran into this guy, about 8 feet long, on an elevated hiking trail. Needless to say, I turned around. Never interrupt a sunbathing gator. I later learned never to crouch down near a gator either. They don’t really attack people because we have a height advantage. It’s good to be tall in the swamp.

I promise to tell you more about the amazing turtles, gators, and birds in the Everglades. There’s also an interesting fashion twist on how the egret was saved. I’ll write about that later. One clue: They have the flapper girls of the 1920s to thank.

Just because I’m experiencing nature doesn’t mean I can forget about style.

Gunnar Gaming Glasses

I first learned about Gunner glasses from my friend Shannon. She has an informative post about them on her blog, The Adventures of Lucky Duck. The glasses are made for people who spend a lot of time in front of a computer. Between writing, teaching online, blogging, photo editing, online shopping, and social networking, I’m a good candidate. I spend a lot of time in front of my PC (not to mention my phone and TV).

The lenses in Gunnar eyewear are amber and offer maximum contrast without causing eye fatigue. They reduce glare and filter out the harshest colors in the spectrum.

Gunnar

I didn’t know if they’d work, but they sure looked cool. My health plan includes an optical package so I didn’t have to pay for mine. If yours doesn’t, rest assured: They range in price from $80 to $150. There are a lot of styles to choose from too. I got red ones, but I went back for a second pair in blue.

I don’t have prescription glasses so I thought wearing these would feel strange. On the contrary: They’re so lightweight and comfortable that I don’t even remember I’m wearing them. If you need glasses anyway, I believe you can order your Gunnar glasses with a prescription.

After wearing mine for a while, I can say that I do notice a difference. I get fewer headaches. My eyes really do seem less strained, and the shape of the frames protect them from the dry, recirculated office air that can make staring at a computer so painful.

Street Style: Two Tiny Tots

Often, little girls’ clothes are more interesting than clothes for little boys. But these two handsome young men show us all how sharp a fella’ can look. No baseball jerseys, no sneakers, just classic pieces that take them from preschool to dinner and a show (in this case, an episode of Yo Gabba Gabba).

Theo and Angus

Both lads are wearing hand-me-downs. That’s the original upcycle. So they’re stylish and thrifty, which is great when you outgrow your threads every three months.

Theo is wearing a chocolate-brown, cable-knit sweater vest with red trim over a matching red button-down shirt. He’s wearing black cords and matching oxfords. In his hand is his latest edible creation: A Tofutti, carrot and olive penguin.

Angus has on a red, cable-knit sweater vest. He’s wearing a black t-shirt under his vest and has jeans with patches on the knees. The pants are durable and stylish with their darker denim overlays, don’t you think? His sturdy shoes are great for playing and cycling–the latter of which Angus just did. That’s why he’s still got his bike helmet on. He knows being safe is fashionable.

Snow Day!

What is going on? I live in a moderate climate but once a year we’re reminded about how the rain isn’t so bad. When it snows, Seattle shuts down. Hills galore and nary a plow or salt truck in sight. The cars don’t rust but they might get smashed to bits sliding down the street on days like this.

Hat: Fuego
Sweater: Thrifted
Skirt: Dress Barn
Leggings: The Bay
Boots: G by Guess
Cowl: Scarf City
Gloves: Craft fair

That’s why I stayed home. I got a lot of work done sitting in my home office all alone without distractions. So it wasn’t bad. My dog and cat appreciated the company too.

I have plans to meet my parents in Florida later this week and 80 degree weather never sounded so nice. I just hope the roads clear so I can get to the airport!

cosy clothes

On a clothing-related note, I finally got to mix red and pink today. I’ve wanted to do that for a while. Strawberry Shortcake did it in the ’80s, and I’m doing it now.

Why I don’t Wear Fur

I usually keep this blog light. It’s not a soapbox or forum for me to rant. Fashion is fun, right? But today, I want to explain the fur-free blog badge I added to the right column of this blog. It’s subtle. This post isn’t.bunny

Fur is a cruel, cruel industry. I’ve been to mink and fox farms, and I’ve seen firsthand the horrors that these poor creatures endure day in and day out in the name of fashion.

No one can be 100% cruelty-free or eco-friendly, no matter how hard we try. My computer is made of petrochemicals. I eat avocados knowing they were shipped thousands of miles to get to me. But fur is an easy one. I can simply avoid it. It’s an unnecessary “luxury.”

Here’s why:

It’s bad for the environment. The waste runoff from fur farms pollutes rivers and streams. Chemicals and feces are often found in waters near fur farms. Fur is natural, but in order to keep fur from decomposing like a dead squirrel on the road, it gets treated with a bevy of chemicals–from formaldehyde to ammonia. Trapping is no better. Deer, birds, dogs and cats often end up in traps meant for other animals. Plus, the ecosystem is affected when people mess with the balance of nature.

It’s cruel. Foxes are anally electrocuted before they are skinned. Mink usually have their necks broken or are injected with poison. Death is slow because their precious pelts need to be preserved. Their lives in filthy cages aren’t better. The foxes I saw were despondent. The mink ran endlessly in circles–driven insane by captivity. Mink that are free live solitary lives near water where they can travel for miles a day. Foxes are intelligent, social creatures. Watching them in the wild is amazing; seeing them suffer in cages makes me hate humanity.

cat

Alice looks good in fur

From beavers, chinchillas, and mink, to rabbits, seals, and even dogs and cats, millions of animals needlessly suffer. There are no laws protecting fur-bearing animals. If you’re unconvinced, check out this video. If you wear fur you need to see it so you know where fur comes from. If you just wear “a little” like fur trim, remember that no amount is humane. Animals die all the same.

The good news is, fur is completely avoidable. If you think suffering and death is too high a price to pay for fashion, you’ve got choices.

First, you can support retailers and designers who don’t use fur. There are hundreds! From Stella McCartney to H&M, you’ll find something stylish that isn’t cruel. Here’s the fur-free list. If you’re buying faux fur, make sure it really is faux. Sometimes, real fur from China is labelled faux because so many people aren’t buying real fur and it’s cheaper to use the real deal.

If you really like the look of fur, visit Fabulous Furs, an online shop devoted entirely to high-end faux fur items, from pillows and throws to full-length coats.

If you’re concerned about the synthetics used in the making of faux fur, well, then don’t wear tennis shoes or lip gloss! They’re made with synthetics too. If you truly want an eco wardrobe, you probably aren’t wearing fur (real or faux). You’re most likely into alternatives like hemp and bamboo or recycled plastics like the ones Patagonia and Nulethics are working with.

Vote with your dollars. Fur sales are on the decline. Let your favorite retailers know that you don’t support fur and you won’t support them if they carry fur. You can be cool without being cruel.

If you have fur you can donate it. My mom and I were always sad that her mother wore fur. Oma was a wonderful person but never connected the dots regarding where her fur came from. The soft, wavy Persian lamb coat was once a fetus that was ripped from its mother’s womb. Two lives lost for a collar on a coat. We donated the coat to a wildlife center that uses them to line the beds of orphaned animals. It’s a nice way to give back to animals and keep fur (even vintage coats) from being fashion statements.

I wrote this post to educate and inform. I want to share my concerns–the things that keep me up at night and the images that haunt me. I want to increase the circle of compassion. So where do you stand on the fur issue? How do you incorporate ethics into your fashion choices?

Vintage Leopard-Print Slip

Here’s the slip I debuted on my video blog. I wore for New Year’s already, and here are two more ways I’ve styled it.

A short, fitted skirt in such a sexy print doesn’t need any help in the hotness department. In fact, in both cases, I’ve toned the look down. First, I wore it with flat boots, bright tights, and a long blazer.

leopard and pink

Blazer: Bebe via Goodwill
T-shirt: Target
Slip-as-skirt: eBay
Tights: Target
Pleather boots: G by Guess
Necklace: eBay
Jelly bracelets: eBay

Later, I paired it with a billowy top in blue. Blue is unexpected and doesn’t vamp up the look. The tights are opaque and the heels are chunky.

leopard and blue

Top: Nordstrom
Slip-as-skirt: eBay
Tights: Sockadilly
Faux-suede shoes: Old Navy
Necklace: eBay
Bracelet: Gifted

I found this slip while searching eBay for the term leopard skirt. If you’re looking on eBay, try multiple search terms. For example, animal print or faux leopard. Search in the vintage category if you’re looking for a certain era, type a decade to narrow it down more, or keep the search broad (for example, search all women’s and apparel).

Sometimes I get a lot of results so I filter by price or by which auctions are ending soonest. Try different choices and see what you find. If you’re not looking for a specific item, try fun search terms like boho blouse, scooter dress, or goth skirt to see what comes up. I’ve found interesting items that way. Costume jewelry is fun to shop for too. Type in a descriptor, like owl necklace, or the name of a designer and see what you find. That’s how I found this Vivienne Westwood necklace.

Do shop on eBay? What’s a thrifty find you scored online?

PhoDOGraphy: Frankie Visits Marymoor Park

My dog Frankie first tried out his new camera last winter. You can see the pictures he took in his previous post. At the end of summer, we tried the pet camera again. You can see it attached to his collar, below.

Frankie at work

Following Jean down the gravel path. La-dee-da, la-dee-da…

Ooh, a fence. Gotta claim it as my own.

Dang it’s hot. I hope my tongue isn’t covering the lens. How embarrassing would that be? Gotta get some water outta the river…

This really is a beautiful park. Lotsa trees and bushes…My whisker is itchy!

trees

Hey, look at that cute schnauzer…

I wonder what’s behind the blackberry bushes?

It’s so bright, but I love being in nature!

I’ll get out with Frankie again. This time the temperature will be lower and his tongue will hopefully stay in his mouth!

Purple and Black Swapped Skirt

When I saw the fabric of this skirt I was smitten. I was at a clothing exchange and I didn’t even know if this was a top, dress or skirt yet. I just fell in love with the luscious color.

Turtleneck: Kohl’s
Skirt: Banana Republic via swapped
Belt: Thrifted
Tights: Roots Canada
Necklace: Premier Jewelry
Shoes: Aerosoles

It is a really flattering skirt and it fits perfectly. I have a few ideas for how to wear this, but I started with a turtleneck and tights. I added a belt to emphasize/create more of a waist.

Black Lace in the Mourning

Sometimes I think I was a Victorian widow in a previous life. Well, not really. I don’t believe in reincarnation. But I do really like the clothing of that era. I’d incorporate it into my style more often but I’m so fickle. I dress according to my mood and I’m not sure I could commit to one theme.

Skirt: Forever 21
Belt: Came with another dress
Boots: John Fluevog
Necklaces: eBay and found

Cuff: Joolz Hayworth
Ring: Fuego

I wasn’t in a bad mood today though. I just felt like over-accessorizing and mixing a few items in a way I’d never worn them before. I can’t believe I found this crucifix in the grass while walking my dog. I picked it up, cleaned it off, and paired it with a skull cameo. I thought the little skeletons on my bracelet went well with it.

details

In high school my dad would get so angry when I wore a t-shirt with a Jolly Roger on it or a skull pin on my jacket. He probably thought it was satanic or I was death-obsessed. On the contrary! I love life and I happen to be amazed by the human body. Skeletons are so cool but we’ll never get to see our own.

I freaked my husband out once when we kissed and our teeth accidentally touched. I said, “we just touched skulls.” Apparently that’s not a romantic thing to tell a guy. Who knew?
