Three Little Paintings

three paintingsI really enjoy painting. I have since I was a kid, and I even minored in fine art in university. Lately, though, painting has taken a back seat to some of my many other interests. It’s tough being Jean of all Trades and having my fingers in so many pies!

This evening, however, I kept away from the television and brought out the paints. I chose acrylic for its fast drying time. I kept the paint flowing and worked on style and blending, not perfection.

I like creating painterly pieces and I wanted the bottles to have an element of whimsy to them and possibly even look like you’ve consumed the wine and can’t see straight. Or maybe they look like I drank the wine before embarking on this project!

I like deep yellows and blended a few colors together to come up with a marigold shade and some lighter yellow too. I thought that would be a good background for the richness of the bottles.

I painted the bottles with different tones too, so they look like glass. I didn’t try to make then photorealistic though. They float on a relatively flat plane (although I did add lighter and darker tones to create a sense of roundness).

Explanations aside, the main thing is that I had fun painting the bottles. I hung them in my kitchen (next to my wine rack) so I could take pictures for this site and for Etsy (I’ve posted them on my Etsy page so, yes, they are for sale).

Fortunately for me, they fit right into my kitchen where I’ll be keeping them on the wall until someone buys them.

I have a few other painting projects in mind. A coffee cup series is probably next. I also want to paint a giant enlargement of what viruses look like under a microscope, but I doubt people would want to hang those in their kitchens.

Do you paint? What type of creative endeavors are you interested in? What inspires you? Feel free to leave a comment and tell me about it.

Hot and Cold: Jovovich Hawk Dress

I’m getting good use out of my floral Jovovich-Hawk dress. I recently wore it to work and styled it with orange tights and yellow shoes. I got the color inspiration from a kids’ painting easel that I saw in a children’s store in a mall.

I put on my dress added a brown belt. When I left the house, I realized how cold it was! It’s almost summer, but it’s still chilly in Seattle in the mornings. Seems strange since the rest of the country is in the middle of a heat wave. I grabbed my go-to safari jacket and warmed up the outfit, proving that this Jovovich-Hawk dress is a three-season number.

Show Me the Monkey

Today I started with an accessory—an amazing red monkey-head necklace from my friend Angie—and picked out my clothes afterward. I was so happy when Angie gave me the necklace. It was totally out of the blue. She made it for me because she knew I liked fashion (and monkeys).

It’s still feeling cool in the Pacific Northwest, so I wore a long-sleeved T and baggy cargo pants.

Top: Old Navy
Pants: Macy’s
Necklace: DIY by Angie
Shoes: Timberland

Sometimes the cuff on my pants unrolls—it seems like the buttoned tabs that holds them up are not evenly placed. What do you expect for $11? I might tack them with  a couple of stitches so they don’t unroll. I will lose the option of wearing these unrolled, but I haven’t worn them that way yet, so I don’t have a lot to lose.

Street Style: Goodwill Hunting

I’m not good at keeping you, my dear readers, up-to-date, because this newsworthy tidbit is a few weeks old. However, since scoring a good deal is always in style, I thought I’d share yesterday’s news with you.

My coworker Shannon, the mastermind behind The Adventures of Lucky Duck, and I recently went to Goodwill’s designer sale. You can read all the gory glorious details on Shannon’s post. Basically, hordes of bargain shoppers lined up early and pushed and shoved for discounts on designer labels. You see, Goodwill saves up all the “good stuff” and holds a sale for brand-aware, budget-conscious shoppers. The prices aren’t cheap, but they’re still a good deal. And Goodwill purchases fund job training, computer classes, and English classes for deserving people. Shopping for a cause!

Shannon scored a sky blue Michael Kors silk top with tags still attached. When I recently saw Shannon wearing the top she got that day at Goodwill, I snapped a photo.

Shannon apologized for her choice of footwear. I told her not to. The rhinestone sandals look adorable with her top and denim capris. She chose them because she was on her way to get a pedicure so she’d be ready for her trip to Hawaii. Aloha Shannon!

Vegan Posse on Broadway

My post title is a ripoff the title of a song (Posse on Broadway) on Sir Mix-a-Lot’s debut album, Swass. I just couldn’t resist. Sir Mix-a-Lot is a Seattle native and wrote the song about our Broadway, not the one in NYC.

The Seattle Broadway in the Capitol Hill neighborhood is where hubby and I spent the day. We lived in Capitol Hill when we first moved in together. It’s an eclectic, artsy neighborhood, and home to Seattle’s gay scene.

We first stopped at Highline, a vegan bar and diner, hubs had a bloody mary and biscuits and gravy. I had a tofu scramble and French toast. I like Highline. It’s got a punk rock, blue-collar vibe with no pretense.

highline

Then we walked around the perimeter of a construction site. Perhaps not the most interesting thing in the world—unless you’re in Capitol Hill. The plywood walls that blocked off the 100′ hole in the ground (there’s an underground light rail tunnel being developed) were peppered with art. This must be a city-sanctioned project; every piece was attributed to an artist. My favorite was a mosaic by Cameron Larson made of bottle caps:

I liked the humor in the huge, wooden newspaper mural by Amanda Moore:

news

And Tim Marsden’s “Boom” made an impact:

On the way back to my car, we found a medicinal marijuana dispensary. They were closed:

Socks: The Gap

Sock and sandals are a “fashion don’t” but I’m liking the combo. I think this looks best with chunky heels though. Flats might look frumpy and delicate heels might look out-of-place unless the socks are thin. Do you dare wear socks and sandals? What other “don’ts” do you try?

No CAPS LOCK Please

dON’T YOU HATE IT WHEN YOU ACCIDENTALLY HIT THE cAPS lOCK KEY?

Me too! And that’s why I pried mine off my keyboard and have plans to turn it into a brooch. And no, it’s not polite to press people’s buttons. So don’t touch my brooch.

caps lock key

My solution might not be elegant, but it does raise a good question: Is there a need for caps lock anymore? If I want to type one or two capital letters, I simply hold down the Shift key. If I want to type a whole sentence in caps lock I first ask myself if it’s really necessary. If it is, I’ll usually highlight the words and change the font to “All caps.” That way, I’m free to change it back when I realize that the written equivalent of yelling at someone isn’t a good move.

Do to this in Word, highlight the words, right-click, and choose Font. In the Font dialog box, check the box next to “All caps.”

caps lock

Recently, I found a few tech blogs where people were testing keyboard prototypes that didn’t have a Caps Lock key. That’s promising. I’ve seen smart phones that have a handy “.com” key on the touch keyboard. Nice!

There’s a way to remap a keyboard and switch the keys internally. Some people switch the Ctrl key and the Caps Lock key (thinking that pressing the Ctrl key accidentally doesn’t inflict as much damage. Or perhaps the remapping crowd uses Ctrl more).

Hat’s off to those of you who dare to remap your keyboards. I know I’d mess that up so I won’t even try.

What key would you prefer to have at the disposal of your left pinky? June 28th and October 22nd are International Caps Lock Days. How will you celebrate? Care to pry off a key with me this year?

Tattoo shopping: Black and Purple

Most of the year my tattoos are hidden by my clothing. Every now and then you might see part of one peeking out from my collar or sleeve. Summer is the best time to catch a glimpse of the work I’ve had done. I don’t “show off” my work, but it’s hard not to notice it in the summer. I got tattoos for me, not to get attention. I didn’t anticipate the attention and comments I’d receive. It’s all been positive, but I have to admit, it weirds me out.

I got a lot of my work done at Slave to the Needle in Seattle. All the artists there are really talented. The artist who did my work, Darcy Nutt, no longer lives in the area. She works at Chalice Tattoo in Boise, Idaho. If you want a tattoo and you live near Boise, go see her!

It’s time for another tattoo. I went to scout artists and locations with my friend, Amy. I have the design in my head but it’s not drawn yet, so no sneak peek. I have my appointment booked at Two Birds Tattoo. All I’ll show you today is what I wore to shop for a tattoo.

black pants

purple cardigan

zebra bag

Cowl-neck top: Ross Dress for Less
Cardigan: Nordstrom
Pants: Gap
Belt: Target
Purse: Walmart
Shoes: Dansko via Goodwill

By the way, if you’re looking for a tattoo, here are a couple of tips:

  • Find an artist to draw something for you. Picking flash off the wall is quick, but it’s not going to be unique.
  • Make sure you’re comfortable with the artist and the shop. Cleanliness and artistic talent are both top priority.
  • Choose a design that is timeless and meaningful to you. This will be with you for a lifetime.

Update: I got the tattoo. You can read the full post here.

Thrifty Thursday: Mustard and Orange

Something’s gotten into me lately. In the past couple of months I’ve purchased a yellow dress, yellow tote bag, and now these yellow skinny jeans. I like yellow. I never really used to. This time last year, I didn’t own a single yellow thing.

I had a pair of skinny yellow jeans in the 80s, and these reminded me of good times in middle school, senior public, junior high, or whatever you call it. I found this pair online. They’re See by Chloe and were close to $200 before they went on sale. As luck would have it, only my size was available—and they were reduced to $30.

They were on my doorstep when I returned from Santa Fe. So with sunshine on my mind, I assembled this get-up.

Top: Old Navy ($10)
Pants: See by Chloe ($30)
Shoes: Target ($15)
Scarf: Street vendor in NYC ($5)
Sunglasses: Target ($10)
Bracelet and Necklace: Street artist in Santa Fe ($25 each)

To qualify for a thrifty outfit, the total has to come in at under $100. This outfit does—if you don’t count the jewelry. And jewelry is optional (compared to, say, a shirt), so I’m going to let this slide.

I got to try a couple of turquoise pieces that I bought in Santa Fe. I think the necklace and bracelet work well with yellow and orange (complimentary colors and all). Just for fun, I added animal print ballet flats. How do you wear animal prints? Are there certain colors you stay away from?

My First Manolos

In the back of my head, is a little voice urging me to get a pair of Manolo Blahniks. I keep telling it “name brands don’t matter” but there is something nice about quality and, to some degree, luxury.

That said, I don’t want to spend $700 on a pair of shoes. I imagine myself, several years from now, down and out and looking at those shoes and wishing I’d invested the money or had that extra month’s rent. I know I shouldn’t visualize such a bleak future, but it’s telling. Live within your means is my motto.

So, imagine my surprise when I found a pair of barely worn, perfect-fitting Manolos at Ragamoffyn’s in Kirkland, Washington.

Ragamoffyn’s is a high-end consignment shop. The racks are lined with Prada, Oscar de la Renta, Pucci, and the likes. I had no idea my “new” shoes would be so comfortable. I tried them on and they felt like slippers. Soft and comfortable despite a pointy toe. They were $120, more than I pay for most new shoes, but I felt like I’d bagged a bargain. I can dress them up or down and will be enjoying them for years to come.

Adorable Blog Award

I am the proud recipient of the Adorable Blog Award. I received the award from fellow local Seattle blogger Deirdre of Pictures of People Wearing clothes.

Ten things about me

  1. I’m a first generation Canadian. My parents both emigrated to Canada (from Scotland and Germany) when they were kids.
  2. I lived in Germany for a year when I was ten. I learned the language and fell in love with the country.
  3. The first two albums I ever bought were Michael Jackson’s Off The Wall and Cyndi Lauper’s She’s So Unusual. They heavily influenced and shaped my musical tastes.
  4. I have my motorcycle endorsement. I don’t have a bike at the moment, but a sportbike was my main form of transportation for years; I also participated in track days at Pacific Raceways.
  5. I was a founding member of the Rat City Rollergirls and my skate name was Lady Die.
  6. I’d rather have dental work done than spend time with children (it’s nothing personal).
  7. I’d rather walk than take the bus (again, nothing personal).
  8. I used to run my own dog-walking and pet-sitting business.
  9. I have a lot more tattoos than you can see in my style photos (and I’m getting more).
  10. I’m married despite not really being a fan of the institution of marriage. I made an exception because my guy is so damn cute and doesn’t expect a traditional wife.

I want to give this award to:

Real Girl Runway (for being so much fun to do a guest-post with)

The Boston Fashionista (for having great style with a smile)

Made to Travel (for recommending the book Half the Sky)
