Celebrating Thanksgiving at Plum Bistro

I blogged about my Thanksgiving feast on my vegan blog yesterday and I thought enjoying delicious food is something everyone loves, so I’m reposting my experience here.

For Thanksgiving this year, hubby treated me to a four-course meal at Plum Bistro, a vegan restaurant in Seattle. Most restaurants were closed today, but Plum had a special prix fixe menu. Hubby thought it would be nice to eat without cooking or cleaning up. He was right!

We started our meal with roasted heirloom carrots and Brussels sprouts with a maple and thyme glaze. I could have gone home happy at this point, but there was more.

starter

Our appetizer was Plum’s famous smoky mac and yease. It was creamy and delicious–vegan comfort food at its finest.

mac and yease

For the main course, we dined on smoked seitan roast with gravy and cornbread stuffing. The stuffing, with cranberry reduction on the side was so satisfying I didn’t need dessert.

But when dessert came–a bourbon chocolate pecan pie–I didn’t hesitate to devour it. It was drizzled with caramel, covered with a dollop of smooth, dairy-free whipped cream, and garnished with pomegranate seeds and a pecan.

I have a lot to be thankful for, and this meal was no exception! I enjoyed a cruelty-free meal and I loved seeing everyone in the packed restaurant enjoying healthy, vegan food too.

I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. If you’re in Seattle, you’ve got to visit Plum!

1950s Lucite Purses

One of the nice things about travelling with my parents is that we meet lots of people. I tend to “mind my own business” when I go out; for my parents, everyone’s a friend they haven’t met yet. Even in the Big Apple, they proved amazing people are around every corner. We met cabbies, waiters, artisans, shop keepers, designers, restaurateurs and celebrities.

So it was no surprise that while I popped into a pet supply store in SoHo, my parents were making friends with a shop keeper across the street. We were treated to a history lesson and tour of mid-century American style. Deco Jewels is an antique specialty shop dedicated primarily to vintage Lucite handbags. This tiny store boasts the world’s largest collection. The owner even wrote a book about it!

Carry Me

Lucite, sometimes called acrylic glass, is a modern-era material. It was first used for windshields and submarine turrets in WWII. Designers started working with it because unlike other types of plastic, it doesn’t yellow over time. You might have seen iconic clear Lucite tables and chairs. Lucite can be tinted too and is a great vegan alternative to tortoiseshell and mother of pearl.

lucite bags

Many were embellished with glitter and metal clasps.

These two were made to look like caramel squares.

Holding a Lucite bag made me want to change into a fitted blazer, pencil skirt, and kitten heels.

The boxy nature of the handbags made adding secret compartments an option. This one came with its own lipstick and powder!

purse with makeup compartment

From Marilyn Monroe to Jackie Kennedy, high-profile, fashion-minded women in the 50s carried Lucite purses. By the mid-60s, fashions started to change. A proper, ladylike look was replaced with a relaxed, boho vibe. Despite not being a common purse today, people still collect Lucite bags. They’re museum-worthy, but they’d make a great fashion statement.

The handbags range from a few hundred dollars to a couple of thousand. In addition to Lucite, Deco Jewels carries vintage earrings, necklaces, cufflinks and other American goodies from the mid-20th century.

The store is small, but not cluttered. And despite its size, you’ll find yourself enthralled for a long time.

Bright Pink Skater Dress

When I saw this dress in an Old Navy Store in Brooklyn, I wanted to buy it. But I was saving space in my suitcase for things I couldn’t find in Seattle. So as soon as I came home, I popped by my nearest Old Navy and picked one up. I’m glad I waited: They were having a storewide 20% off sale.

Dress: Old Navy
Cardigan: Swapped
Shoes: Kimchi via Buffalo Exchange
Necklace: Shop in Fort Lauderdale
Earrings: Shop in Savannah
Hairband: Old Navy

This dress reminds me of something I might wear ice skating–if I were an ice skater from the past. It’s got a neat retro feel. If I had a faux fur handwarmer and a pair of skates on, I think I could convince you! Then again, maybe I couldn’t. When my husband saw me in this he asked why I was dressed like the T-Mobile girl!

black and pink

I layered a cardigan over my sleeveless dress–and I’ll be wearing it with tights soon too. But the nice thing is I’ll be able to wear it in the summer too. I could even layer a shirt or turtleneck under it.

As I often do, I bought this dress in black too. It was such a comfortable, affordable, versatile item, that I couldn’t resist!

Timex as Accessory

You might notice that I don’t often wear a watch in my posts. I have occasionally, like I did with my khaki Timex. But I often figure that my phone has a clock, so why bother? Well, Timex reached out to me to see how I could add a watch to my outfits. When I like a style, I often pick several in different colors, and this watch was no exception.

Timex

It’s the same as my other Timex (with silver instead of bronze-tone metal). Now that I have two, I can swap bands and wear silver and khaki or black and bronze if I like. I also found straps in other colors on the Timex site. Now I can turn two faces into a bunch of watches! I chose this style the first time because of the large, simple face and because the band is non-leather.

Dress: Swapped (Tucker for Target)
Leggings: JC Penney
Jacket: Swapped
Scarf: DIY
Flats: H&M
Belt: Ross Dress for Less
Bag: Alchemy Goods
Watch: Timex Weekender

Even though I might not always need the time on my wrist, a watch is a great fashion statement. I think you’ll see watches appearing more often in my posts. Do you wear watches?

accessory details

And to wear with my watch? My fall floral dress of course! A few of you recommended skinny jeans for this dress, and I’ve done just that. They’re actually denim leggings (I hate the word jeggings). They’re perfect under a long tunic or short dress. No zipper or pockets means no lumps or bumps. My dress lies smooth.

I’ve been using this recycled innertube bag a lot lately. It’s deep enough to fit my laptop and the normal things I carry with me.

Fall Blazer Day

I’m definitely overdosing on fall colors today, but I don’t mind. I like earth tones and I love orange.

orange pants

Blazer: Thrifted
T-shirt: Victoria’s Secret
Pants: Dickies
Boots: MIA
Scarf: Street vendor

When I first got dressed, I had on a black t-shirt and orange pants. A bit too halloweenish! So I added caramel boots and a light blazer.

blazer and work pants

My pants are by Dickies. When I first discovered Dickies, I thought I was onto something new–until my dad pointed out his work pants. He’s a painter and interior decorator and wears Dickies to work every day (his are white and splattered in paint). I quickly learned that the company, so well-known for work wear, made the leap to fashion.

Levi’s, Carhartt and Doctor Marten’s are also in this category: work wear as fashion. And since I wore this outfit to work (in an office, but still), I think it’s appropriate.

I’m loving the fall colors and how the rain in Seattle brings out the moss.

Ocean Colors and DIY Earrings

Here’s a Throwback Thursday post. I originally made these earrings in the spring and forgot to show them off! They’re made of simple, thin strands of ribbon that I poked onto a fishhook-style earring. The best part: I got the ribbon for free!

DIY earrings

Whenever I buy clothes with built-in hanger straps, I cut off the straps so they don’t peek out when I’m wearing my clothes. Some stores like H&M use ribbon in the color of the garment, which means I have matching earring for anything I buy there.

When I pair shades of blues together, I’m reminded of the ocean. And the ocean remind me of nice weather (since that’s the only time I go to the beach). Outfits like this make me happy, even when I’m looking serious. (I’m smiling on the inside.)

Flares: Urban Outfitters via consignment
Shoes: Old Navy
Arm party: Various shops

I realize I’m wearing flares, and the trend is for skinnies. I still find them elegant though. Sometimes I’ll sew wide legs into skinny ones but I think I’ll leave these as they are.

Leopard Wrap Dress

One of my first exposures to designer garments was my Oma’s Diane von Furstenberg wrap dress. In the 70s, Oma (German for grandma) worked at a high-end designer shop and spent her hard-earned money on elegant apparel. Oma passed away twelve years ago today, and I still remember her fondly. She was a style icon and role model for both my mom and me.

I inherited my Oma’s DVF dress and wore it to meet the designer herself a couple of years ago. Oma would have been thrilled! I like some of the same styles my Oma liked and when I saw this DVF in a consignment shop, I pounced on it.

DVF wrap

Dress: DVF via Second Time Around (Boston)
Tights: Target
Necklace: Gifted (thanks mom!)
Boots: Consignment

It’s not vintage, but it is a wrap. And it’s animal print–one of Oma’s favorite patterns. I love classic leopard prints just like she did. And the fresh take on a classic–with blues and greens instead of shades of brown–made this all the more appealing.

bluie and green leopard

I’ve worn this dress in summer, but it works just as well with tights in cooler weather. A wrap dress is timeless and great for any season. The stretchy jersey that this one is made from makes it really comfortable. I can wear it to the office or out to dinner.

Floral Dress for Fall

I picked up this Tucker for Target dress at a clothing exchange last spring. My friend never wore it because it was too short for her 5′ 11″ frame. I get it! It’s short on me and I’m barely 5′ 7″.

Jacket: Swapped
Tights: Target
Pleather boots: MIA
Scarf: DIY
Belt: Swapped

But with tights, I feel covered up. I didn’t wear this with bare legs in the summer, but it’s a fun fall dress. And with the black background, the floral seems seasonally appropriate.

floral and denim

I paired the dress with merlot tights this time. There are so many colors in the dress that I can wear lots of different tights with it: forest or marigold are my two next choices.

outfit details

You might recognize my scarf. It’s one of the DIY t-shirt scarves I made a few years ago. I liked the light blue and how it played with the wine and denim.

Without my jacket, the dress is obviously summery, but I’ll just keep layered and keep on wearing my summer clothes into winter.summer dress

Adding Color with Tights

A monochromatic look is classic and chic, but when you want to make an outfit fun, just add color!

I picked up this retro-inspired shift at a clothing exchange and wanted to punch it up a bit so I added bright tights. And for even more punch, I belted the dress with a neon belt.

black and pops of color

Dress: Swapped
Tights: Target
Boots: Borrowed
Belt: Swapped

The color (and white piping on the dress) takes this from serious to playful. And if I want to be more office-appropriate, I can easily swap out the belt for a white one and put on black tights.

I don’t think fashion needs to be serious and I like expressing myself through my clothes, so I’ll stick to bright tights for now. Purple, yellow or blue tights would all be fun. And since the dress is solid, it’s practically begging for a fun, patterned pair of tights.

pink and yellow accesories

I have a feeling you’ll see a few more combinations of this dress in the coming winter season.

Casual Leopard

One of the best ways to dress down an outfit is to throw on a denim jacket. Denim has a devil-may-care attitude, especially when paired with a dress.

leopard casual

Dress: Ross Dress for Less
Jacket: Swapped
Tights: Target
Boots: MIA
Scarf: Street vendor in Toronto

I dressed down this leopard-print dress with a denim jacket, and I took is a couple of steps further. I added purple tights and a robin’s egg blue scarf. Flat knee-high boots added to the relaxed feel.

Now the dress that was office or dinner wear is ready for a casual lunch with friends. I happened to run errands in this outfit and was comfortable and stylish. Plus, the extra layers kept me warm!
