Remixed Scarf Top

I’m all about value. So when I buy something, I like to know I can wear it many different way or with many other items in my closet. This top is no exception.

Top: TJ Maxx
Pants: Calvin Klein via swapped
Cuff: The Fashion Truck
Shoes: Timberland
Tote: Victoria’s Secret

I wore this handkerchief top a few weeks ago. I also wore these pants recently. I had no intention of pairing them with each other until I saw them folded side by side on my dresser. Then it hit me. They go together nicely. I always wanted to pick pants that have one of the colors from the top, but it isn’t necessary.

So you remix individual pieces or do you buy ? Do you have a rule (like an item must go with three other things or you won’t buy it)?

Stripes and Neutrals

Here’s a head to toe thrifty look:

neutrals

Jacket: The Gap via swapped
Top: Swapped
Pants: Calvin Klein via Swapped
Earrings: Premier Designs
Cuff: Lauren Harkness
Shoes: Flexx

I got the jacket, pants, and top at a clothing exchange recently. What a deal–free clothes! My shoes were on sale at Endless.com and were closer to $40 than their original $140 price tag.

earthy srtipes

After I wore this outfit all day and took off the jacket, I realized that it was a maternity jacket! Oh well, it’s still cute and I thought the boxy shape was a nod to 1950s-styled cropped coats.

sleeveless sweater

First I wore a belly band to make too-small pants fit and now I’m wearing a maternity top. Oh my! Despite what it looks like, I’m not having a kid! I just borrow ideas and styles from ladies with baby bumps.

Light Pink and Dark Blue

Here’s a color combo I don’t wear a lot: Ballet pink and navy blue.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Cardi: Old Navy
Top: H&M
Pants: Eileen Fisher via Goodwill
Shoes: Jimmy Choo
Sunglasses: Florida Street Fair

I like the softness of the pink paired with the blue. I ruched these pants myself so they’d change from tapered ankle, out-of-date trousers to “the latest thing.” I’ve seen harem styled pants and wide, flowy cropped pants in magazines and thought I’d copy that style. I’ve worn these a few times. I even tried this last year with socks and sandals. Might as well break some rules now and then.

The pants look best with heels, but flats are more practical sometimes. The subtle gold sparkle on my cardigan ties in the gold toes on my shoes.

Do you alter clothes to make them your own?

Leopard and Denim

I’ve joined WIWW at The Pleated Poppy. Check out what all the others are wearing on a Wednesday!

Look what I found in the vaults: A couple of photos that never made it into my blog. You can tell this isn’t current because a) the rhododendrons are blooming and b) my hair is a bit shorter. That means that my hair is actually growing! I’m trying to grow it but it’s a slow process.

leopard and denim

Shirt: Old Navy
Tank: Target
Jeans: Earnest Sewn
Boots: Urban Outfitters
Bag: SNAP Design
Earrings: Amy Bengston

I wore this sheer leopard shirt over a tank and paired it with skinny jeans and booties. I wanted casual, not sexy. And a sheer, animal print top can easily veer into sexy if you’re not careful. Not that there’s anything wrong with sexy. But if memory serves me correctly, I wore this on a Saturday for running errands. I was going for casual and fun.

Even though this picture is a few months old, it’s a current look. I wore it in spring, and I’ll wear this shirt in fall too. In fact, I keep most of my clothes for a long time and they make appearances season after season.

Does your wardrobe have a high turnover or do you keep pieces year after year?

Neon with Black and White

I picked up this neat top in Vancouver this past spring but it hadn’t made it onto my blog until now. I like the mesh and color blocking and the 80s vibe I get from it. I also like that it’s from a store we don’t have in the USA so the chances of someone else wearing the same top is slim to nil.

It’s a great piece for Visible Monday–check out all the other posts at Not Dead Yet!

Top: Bedo
Pants: The Gap
Cuff: Consignment
Bag: Sue Huston
Shoes: Kelly & Katie

Since it has an 80s feel, I paired the top with my neon yellow boyfriend jeans. But that wasn’t enough. I added a bright pink purse too. I love pops of color and even though black is classic and elegant, it’s hard for me to leave the house without a bit of bright.

black and white and neon

This works best with a strapless bra because of the sheer shoulders. However, I think a colorful, intentionally visible bra strap might work. I’m still of the mindset that bras shouldn’t show. That’s why I have strapless, racerback, and other types of bras to choose from. However, the bra as fashion statement is popular. I’m okay with that unless it looks sloppy. I like a clean-looking tank top, for example, without straps hanging out. Is that old-fashioned?

Speaking of bras, I’ve heard that up to 80% of women are wearing the wrong size. I recently went to Nordstrom for a professional fitting, expecting to be one of the 20%. In fact, I was convinced the clerk would congratulate me on my ability to correctly fit myself. Boy was I wrong! I was not wearing the right size bra. She helped me get into one that fit. And of course, I bought six. They feel great and wearing the right size really makes a difference in terms of comfort, posture, and the way my clothes look.

Changing it up with Legwear

This month’s theme at Sophistique Noir is hosiery. Sign me up! I love all types of legwear: fishnets, tights, over-the-knee socks, you name it. Legwear has the ability to transform an outfit and I want to show you a few ways I do that with my collection of hosiery.

Today, I’m wearing a neutral outfit–a black top and skirt–so I can show how simply changing hosiery (and shoes) changes the look.

First I started with gold-tone fishnets. From a distance it almost looks like I’m not wearing hosiery, but up close, you can see the neat texture. Way cooler than beige pantyhose and more sophisticated than bare legs. I think this look has a retro vibe.

black and nude

Top, skirt, and bangles: Swapped
Necklace: Gifted
Tights: Marshall’s
Shoes: JC Penney

I bought these shoes as a “blank canvas.” Almost to be forgotten and blend in. Nude shoes elongate the leg, as does matching your shoes to your hose. Either will make you look taller, and I for one, am not opposed to that!

nude shoes and gold fishnets

Next, I went for fun. I kept the outfit the same but added purple and black striped thigh-highs. They’re warmer and more casual than the fishnets and create a totally different look.

striped tights

Shoes: Aerosoles
Tights: Leg Avenue

Finally, I swapped out the stripes for sweater tights. They’re an open-weave crochet-style. Black is always chic and these are great for fall. I love fishnets too, but they can be chilly in Seattle winters.

Tights: Marshall’s
Shoes: Sell Your Sole

The cherry on the top (or bottom, as the case is) of this outfit are my amazing consignment find: Louboutin booties. I would have never bought these new (they retail for $995) but I got them for much less at Sell Your Sole, an upscale consignment boutique in Seattle.

Do you like tights and legwear? How do you use them to change your look?

Halloween Costume: Rosie the Riveter

We can do it!

Jean as Rosie the Riveter

And I did. Many thanks to Cable Car Couture for giving me the idea of a simple, DIY costume. This Rosie the Riveter look cost me $1.89 (only because I had to buy the bandana at a craft store). I love this look because it’s simple to assemble and instantly recognizable, it’s work appropriate (I can’t go to the office dressed as a French maid!), and it’s given me ideas beyond Halloween.

For example, I want to wear headscarves on a regular basis now. I just might turn rockabilly. This is so fun to wear and a great trick when growing out a short hairdo.

head to toe denim

Another reason I liked this costume idea is because of the sartorial and feminist implications. Here, I’m a literal and figurative blue-collar worker. That got me thinking about two things: women in the workforce, and the history of denim. I’ll start with denim: In the 1870s, Levi Strauss created cotton canvas pants. The 501s went on to become the world’s best-selling item of clothing. Perhaps it’s because they were durable, practical, and riveted.

Blue jeans were a working class staple that cowboys and railway workers wore. But by World War II, they were an essential commodity and sold only to people in defense–like Rosie!

red headscarf

Rosie is an icon. She represents the thousands of American women who worked in factories during the War, often replacing positions of men who were off to battle. After the war, women were expected to return to more traditional duties in the home or in secretarial roles. Many did, but not all. It was the beginning of an important shift in women’s economic power.

On a personal note, my grandmother worked in a factory in England during WWII. She was just a teen when she made airplane engine parts. I’ll write about her soon. It’s an incredible thought to be a schoolgirl one day, and building bombers the next.

What a lot of inspiration from a simple costume. Thanks again to Cable Car Couture! Oh, and I joined ColorBlind’s special Halloween linkup. Check out the entries here. I’m also participating in Transatlantic Blonde’s WIWW linkup. All those entries are here.

Happy Halloween!

On the Town with Hubby

A few weeks ago, Mr Jean of all Trades and I took advantage of the last of the warm weather and strolled through Cal Anderson Park in the heart of Capitol Hill. The Hill is a vibrant neighborhood, and is the place where we both lived when we started dating. Our first shared apartment was here. I still miss having nightlife and restaurants in my backyard, but we traded it in for an actual backyard. Fortunately we’re only 15 minutes away.

Jeans and shoes: Plato’s Closet
Earrings: Gifted
Sunglasses: Street vendor

I liked how cool and casual my husband was on this sunny afternoon. He wears a lot of suits so seeing him in jeans is unusual. He seems comfortable in them. I especially like his choice of shirt: pink plaid.

shirt details

Usually he’s decked out in black and I’m colorful. Today, I was in deep purple and black. But true to my style, I added a pop of color. My apple green purse.

Purse: JC Penney

Bangles: Sears

I love supporting local. My skirt is a design by UNA, which is a Seattle-based company. I’ve worn this before, on a cooler day. I also have a striped skirt by UNA and a black dress.

I’ve joined Visible Monday today. Don’t forget to check out all the other entries at Not Dead Yet!

Sweater Weather

I’m breaking out my fall wardrobe and nothing says autumn like a sweater. Who doesn’t like a sweater? They’re comfy and versatile. This season, loose knit, open weave sweaters are popular so I thought this olive number from my closet would seem fresh.

Tank: Old Navy
Jeans: Banana Republic
Shoes: Seychelles

I like the textures of this sweater. It adds interest and doesn’t seem only about dressing warm. Gotta think of style too, no matter what the thermometer says!

textures and loose knits

I accessorized with this neat die-cut cuff from Karin Jacobson Designs. My friend Elly is a fan and supporter and she brought several pieces back from Minnesota with her on her last visit. Lucky for me, she gave me this one. I like all of the jewelry on Karin’s site and I’ll be buying some soon.

D&G Giraffe Pants

I can’t believe I’m wearing Dolce & Gabbana giraffe-print pants! Never expected to own a pair until I found these at Second Time Around Consignment in Boston. Yes, I’m still showing off my haul from the Boston trip Donna and I took in June. I hit the consignment store jackpot.

giraffe pants

These retail for about $600 (if you compare them to similar styles on the D&G website), but I got them for $40. The best part, and probably the reason I’ll never part with them, is that on the inside of the waistband is a label that reads “Kimberly Gordon.” It’s completely separate from the D&G label. Could these have once belonged to Sonic Youth bassist Kim Gordon?

label

Probably not, but I like to think that they were, and that she put the name tag in them so that when the dry cleaning and laundry was done on the road, all the items could be redistributed to their rightful owners. (Although, I don’t think anyone would get confused and think these were Thurson Moore’s!)

green and brown

If anyone can confirm this, let me know. They’re a probably a size 2. Is Kim? Oh, that brings me to the only problem with the pants. I’m not a size 2. So I did what any brand-loving cheapskate would do. I bought one of those belly bands that pregnant women wear to get more use out of their pants before they have to switch to maternity wear. I have no shame. I keep the pants unzipped, layer on the smoothing belly band, and then throw on a shirt. It works! Try it after Thanksgiving dinner.

So now you know my secret. Would you go this far for a cool item?
